Four hundred years in the future, women control the world but Khan Aurelius, ruler of the last free men, is determined to take back the power that has been denied men for centuries. Outnumbered by far, he knows that women need to give up their power willingly and with one of their councilwomen as a hostage, he’s certain he can influence her with his superior male intellect. She is just a soft … just a soft woman, after all.
Councilwoman Pearl has sacrificed herself to save an innocent priestess. Trapped in the Northlands, her soft voice and sugar-coated view of the world doesn’t impress Khan, who constantly challenges her by playing his mind games to corrupt her and see things his way. It’s a battle of words and wills when the two intelligent rulers clash. Will Pearl succeed in bringing enlightenment and democracy to the primitive Nmen or will Khan corrupt her with his charm first?
The Ruler is the second installment in Elin Peer’s Men of the North series that offers, drama, humor, and romance in a fabulous blend that will have you longing for more.

I love this series
I might be a little bit addicted to it
The second book in the series is Pearl’s, the councilwoman from Motherland and Khan’s the ruler of the Northlands story.
They are both the leaders of their worlds, though the Motherland doesn’t have one leader, but a council of 101 women that vote as an unity.
This book and the story is unbelievable fascinating and dramatic at times.
I love the topic and the flawless writing style.
It’s fast-paced and interesting to read about the world of the future.
It’s definitely a page-turner and unbelievable romantic romance.
This book is funny, entertaining, sweet and swoony.
Oh…and don’t forget steamy
I love the unique humor and the verbal fights between the different genders about their social and cultural differences that accompanied the whole series.
It’s definitely a must read for all romance lovers
This is the second book in the series of the Men of the North and picks up where the first book ended, containing all the familiar characters and some new ones. Pearl Pilotti, one of the female leaders from the Motherlands, volunteers to be the guest to Lord Khan Aurelius, ruler of Northlands, men of the free world. Pearl is kind, loving, intelligent, educated and a warrior with words that knows how to masterfully manipulate the men with her words and brilliant mind, in doing so, she prevents violence, bloodshed and keeps the peace. The story is full of emotion, battle of wills, love and respect. This author is good at weaving a story that pulls you in and makes you feel all the emotions of the characters which are well developed, you feel like you know them in real life. Great read!
While Khan was trying to keep his brother from going crazy over his wife for leaving him because she wanted to learn karate now she was gone and his brother had gone on the other side in hopes that he could find her and bring her home but since he couldn’t he kidnapped a noble woman and Khan has been holding her at the palace until the women of the M world return his brother’s wife. His brother is a laughing stock and his brother is getting drunk and fighting daily. Khan is not surprised that the women on the other side have come up with an idea to exchange her for Councilwoman Pearl who thinks that she is outsmarting Khan but he is quite the slick character and he and Pearl team up and start a school with both boys and girls to see how it will work for the future of both sides. Something big happens for Pearl and Khan and they find that they have more in common than they thought, they make a decision and bring it before the board about the school as well as a personal issue, but the board is not happy with the out come and things change drastically for Pearl and Khan. Great story line, just about everything about this book and the series is pretty fascinating considering we are years into the future. I was given a copy as a gift from the author, I am providing a review without obligation.
This is by far the best futuristic series I have ever read!! Even though this is a standalone book, Elin Peer has once again taken characters from the 1st book, “The Protector” and brought them forward in “The Ruler”. She’s asked in the book not to give spoilers, so I will honor the author’s request. I will however say, there are always 3 sides to any debate. There’s the first way, the second way, and then the compromise. Elin has a way of bringing reality and weaving fiction through to make you feel like you are there wanting to make decisions with the characters. What will you chose? If you haven’t already read book 1 in this series, I whole heartedly recommend it. Then immediately move on to this one. You won’t be disappointed.
Oh, Pearl. You’re about to have your views of the world shaken up. This chess game you’ve engaged in is full of wild variables you cannot account for. You’ll never see it coming. You might even win… but not in the way you planned.
And, ah, Khan… You’re going to corrupt her… seduce her mind… capture the queen… bend her– oh, my. Are you getting caught in your own trap? Ha! Smile. It might not be so bad. But love can be a dangerous double edged sword.
There are many little moments of humor in this story… a bit of snark in the turn of a phrase. And there is sweetness as well. Love, after all, can conquer many things.
The art of seduction is a melding of mind, body and soul.
Can these two very different societies ever come together and reach true peace? In this second book in the Men of the North series, once again, diametrically opposed points of view collide. And many things are left unanswered at the end of this installment of the series. It left me wanting more, and looking forward to the next installment. Meanwhile, this one gets 5 stars.
In Men of the North, you really want to take your time reading these books. Elin Peer builds 2 different worlds, each world is fascinating, the characters are multi-faceted. Book 2 is councilwoman Pearl meeting Khan, their story is entertaining as well as heart warming. Enjoy.
Sorry no spoilers of any kind. But I will say this the story of Khan and Pearl is fantastic. Elin Peer has a great gift of writing of being able to take you into a different world. She had me repeatedly laughing till I cried or growling in anger that I just wanted to throw something. I’m not really a big fan of way overly protective possessive men but Elin Peer knew how to take the edge off and make you actually like those kind of men by showing their softer more gentle side.
So if you haven’t read this book I’m going to give you some advice and that is to try this book because there’s no harm in trying. I think it’s a fantastic read and I highly recommend that you read it because I guarantee you will not be disappointed.
Add 5 more stars to Peer’s literary universe!
This book picks up where book 1 left off and tells the story of Pearl and Khan. It also backs up just a little and tells what was initially going on with Pearl and Khan, while they were only background characters in book 1. In the beginning, Pearl and Khan are like oil and vinegar in that they don’t mix well unless they are thoroughly shaken and forced to blend. Their relationship is a constant power struggle with each wanting their ideas and way of life to dominate the world of the other. The constant clashing also makes for some sizzling chemistry between this power couple. I really liked the way that, even though they disagreed on almost everything, they found a way to develop a friendship based on mutual admiration and respect. They took their time getting to know one another, before intimacy was entered into, and that made the eventual coming together even more meaningful and satisfying.
Pearl and Khan have some common goals and share the desire to see their two worlds learn from each other and eventually unite. But, the road getting there is not going to be easy going, and they will have to content with some discontentment and uprising along the way. I am interested to see how the integrated school will play out in the next novel.
Pearl and Khan are both so headstrong and independent. But, it is a beautiful thing to behold, when they learn that true power lies in completely surrendering yourself to the other, simply because you love them and desire to please them. They learn that the ultimate power is not held by one individual but by two hearts that act in one accord.
I continue to be impressed by Peer’s ability to bring a fresh and unique approach to a futuristic world, as it strives to re-integrate traditional elements of life and romance.
*I received a complimentary ARC of this book in order to read and provide a voluntary, unbiased and honest review, should I choose to do so.
This was one of those reads you just don’t want to put down and having met Pearl and Khan in The Protector I couldn’t wait to read their story. They turned out to be much deeper characters than I had expected, but were just as wonderful, believable and likeable as I had hoped.
Whilst this didn’t have the same sexual chemistry/heat as The Protector, it focused a lot more on building relationships and compromising over differences. I loved that most of the angst in this story was not as a result of conflict between the hero and heroine but was caused by external factors. Seeing Pearl and Khan working together to overcome these barriers made one exciting, steamy and enjoyable read.
I loved that Elin Peer didn’t just have ‘love conquering all’ but actually had Khan and Pearl both learning about the other’s cultures, realising their prejudices were unfounded and working together on a better future for all. Given Khan’s position in the Nmen’s society anything less would have been too glib and easy, ignoring the issues that their relationship would cause.
The story flowed smoothly, was extremely well written and was really easy to read. Both the pace and the action kept my attention and really drew me into the story. Whilst I know the next book will focus on other characters, I’m really hoping Magni gets his HEA at some point too.
Throughly enjoyed this book couldn’t put down once stared to read
The Men of the North Series can be read individually, bust trust me, you won’t want to!!
Elin manages to create this believable world 400 years in the future, where women rule the entire world, except for the Northlands (which used to be Canada). The Northlands is where all the men live who refuse to be ruled by women.
In the first book we are lead to believe this is the smarter and most peaceful way to live, bc of the way the world was almost destroyed 400 years prior. Now, however, the ruler of The Northlands (Lord Kahn) and a councilwoman from the Motherlands (Pearl), who are brought together under difficult circumstances, are starting to believe, the perhaps the pendulum has swung too far in the opposite direction. Even though Pearl and Kahn are both headstrong, and are both fighting to change the other’s way of thinking, the reverse happens and they wind up getting much too close than two rulers from opposing countries should ever get. When you take Pearl’s kind, beautiful, and pacifist heart, and combine it with Kahn’s alpha male, my-word-is-law-or-you-die mentality, it creates a power couple for the ages!! And a romance you won’t be able to put down no matter how hard you try!!
I anxiously awaited the release of this book because I love everything Elin Peer has written and knew this would be no different. And it wasn’t. Fabulous book with a great story. I loved the two main characters and how crazy they are able to drive each other. The dialogue, the situations (even though it’s hundreds of years in the future), all of it…believable and quite easy to imagine. I found myself transported to this great place and that I didn’t want to come back! I especially love how the heroine is strong and oh so very brave, yet maintains her femininity. I’m always a sucker for a strong female character! And Pearl is a great one. I’m reminded of a quote from the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding that goes something like this: “The man may be the head, but the woman is the neck and can turn the head any direction she wants.” That pretty much sums up Pearl. It took Khan a little while, but he learned not to underestimate her. Chess anyone???
And now the wait for The Mentor…
MAN this author has pulled off some major whammies in her books and series but Khan, The Ruler of the Men of the North is completely off of the charts. There isn’t magic. There are no shifters. There are only people and in the North Khan rules. Divided by a past and ignorance, false teaching, prejudice, lies and power. Pearl “sacrifices” herself and heads to the north with a head filled with all of that and more. Khan has his own preconceived notions and when these two meet it is . . . well it’s oil and vinegar. But the dance these two have, the power and the intelligence and the game they play may be their biggest foe. She is not what she seems or what he thought. He will become more than he ever thought he could be when she finds out who he truly is. Maybe just maybe what was thought to be oil and vinegar is something else as well.
It is such a beautiful thing this play between these two, The strength of them both and the story we get at the same time. I love this author’s mind and I love what she creates with it. Her characters always dig deep and take you on the excursion right along with them. It was such an emotional journey I found myself laughing out loud, shedding tears, clapping with excitement, but I didn’t put it down until I was done. You can’t help but be touched in some way.
