Terry Pratchett’s profoundly irreverent, bestselling novels have garnered him a revered position in the halls of parody next to the likes of Mark Twain, Kurt Vonnegut, Douglas Adams, and Carl Hiaasen. The Color of Magic is Terry Pratchett’s maiden voyage through the now-legendary land of Discworld. This is where it all begins — with the tourist Twoflower and his wizard guide, Rincewind.
This is the great start to the wonderful Discworld series. The world-building in this series is vast, so you don’t have to begin reading your plunge into Discworld here, but it’s a nice place to start.
Just fun to read
One of the best!
Terry Pratchett – fantastic and twisted sense of humor. Everyone of his books is well worth the read and many I have read two or three times. This is one of them. Read it, keep it, enjoy it.
First of the Diskworld books, everyone of them is a gem. Lots of laughs if you like English humor.
Terry Pratchett built the Discworld and changed my view of our world the first time I opened this book forever ago. The characters born on these pages continued to grow throughout the rest of Sir Terry’s life. Something’s will make more sense if you begin at the beginning but it is the Discworld and expecting sense is more foolish than selling …
Fantastic, everyone should read Pratchett
If you are wanting a book that will make you laugh, read any of the Terry Pratchett books. They never fail to bring a smile and outright laughter to your day. Great imagination and story telling. The world seems so real and the characters love able.
Terry Pratchett is one of the funniest authors ever to grace a page. The wit and joy of the Discworld books is a wonder of the modern age. The greatest characters in literature have been created by this icon. Cannot recommend highly enough.
A flat world that is a warped mirror of Earth and its so-called intelligent creatures.
The first of many in the Disc-world series. Modern political, religious and social satire in a fantasy setting.
The Disk World books are fought over in my family. They follow main characters through all of the books. Can be read in order or can stand alone. As a family, we have all been able to enjoy and take something from the little, hidden social lesson that is snuck in.
I have yet to read anything Terry Pratchett book that I didn’t love. I loved this one so much in the paperback that I re-purchased it so I could read it as an e-book as often as I wished.
This isn’t my favorite Discworld book, but it’s still pretty good. It’s the first of the series, and introduces Rincewind and other characters that will be developed later in the series. What I like about this book is how it deconstructs the fantasy genre. It also cleverly deconstructs the tourist genre. Being Asian living in SE Asian and someone …
An intellectual comedic ripper!!! Very creative. I actually laughed out loud several times. I heartily recommend this book, chip moatz
The Colour of Magic follows the adventures of Rincewind the not-quite wizard and the Discworld’s first-ever tourist, Twoflower, through hilarious hijinx and close calls. And Twoflower’s luggage, The Luggage, is a loyal companion if ever there was one…even if it has an appetite that’s hard to satiate.
I love Sir Terry Pratchett’s Discworld!
This was my first Prachett. And it was a blast.
Based on what I had heard from friends, I expect Prachett’s writing to be close to that of Gaiman’s, but that was not the case. Far from it. Prachett writes in a more satirical tone and uses language that is a bit more high flown. I also found myself constantly looking up those British informal …
