Terry Pratchett’s profoundly irreverent, bestselling novels have garnered him a revered position in the halls of parody next to the likes of Mark Twain, Kurt Vonnegut, Douglas Adams, and Carl Hiaasen. The Color of Magic is Terry Pratchett’s maiden voyage through the now-legendary land of Discworld. This is where it all begins — with the tourist Twoflower and his wizard guide, Rincewind.
I remember belonging to a book club about 15 years ago and I received Pratchett’s 33rd book “Going Postal” as a monthly selection. I had never heard of the author or knew anything about Discworld. As I began to read, I thought to myself, “Who is this author? Where has he been all my life!!!!” The outrageously colorful cast of characters and story …
It’s been ages since I dipped my toes into the Ankh (and managed to hang on to them), and it was well worth the re-read. Pratchett is a brilliant wit who is always sure to bring out a laugh while on public transportation.
The first novel of Pratchett’s Disc World series is amusing and clever. I don’t remember it as one of the strongest books in the series but I thought it was a good introduction.
Against the advice of many, I decided to start the Discworld series with this book. Perhaps I shouldn’t have after all.
I wanted an introduction into the world and thought this would be a good place to start. The Color of Magic contained four short stories that took me some time to get through. Some bits were laugh out loud funny, at other …
Made me laugh out loud on the bus funny.
I think this is one of his earlier books, so sometimes the writing isn’t quite up to his normal standard, but still a very wonderful book.
Terry Pratchett wrote stories that both poked fun at pretensions and were a joyous romp at the same time. Great fun.
This is the first book in the discworld series. In my personal opinion, it’s not the best one of the series, but hooked me in enough to go on to the next one – and that’s all it took. Pratchett’s witty parody, pokes at established institutions, funny dialog and amazing world building all combine to make this my favorite series.
Looking for a book both you and the kids will enjoy? This a great book full of a fantastical world that has 33 books in the series. Some are more adult than others but they can be treasured no matter the age.
This was really bizarre and OUT THERE… like Way Out There in a wacky universe on a disc world atop elephants standing on a giant turtle.
Creative. Hilarious. And at times confusing (which is part of the point, I think). Just go with it.
This read is one-of-a-kind.
This is the very first of the Discworld books by Terry Pratchett. It isn’t his best, and if I were to rate it against some of his other books, it would only rate three or four stars. But rated against all the other humorous fantasy out there, it easily gets five stars. I wouldn’t start with The Color of Magic unless you’ve already decided to read …
I love Terry Pratchet. I have read every Disc World book and all of the Tiffany Aching books and Good Omens, which he wrote with Neil Gaiman. I enjoyed ever one. Color of Magic is absolutely worth reading, it just isn’t his very best.
Laugh out loud funny.
This is the 1st book in the Discworld series. It introduces some of the most fun characters. You have to love fantasy to love this book–but I suspect that even if you did not love fantasy before you started it, you would be the time you had finished it. Read this book!
Rincewind is not having a good life. He flunked out as a wizard due to a bet, and now he is stuck playing tour guide to the first tourist on Discworld. Their antics are amusing at first but quickly lose their luster. Death is the best part of the book, but I was delighted to see THE END.

Highly enjoyable!
A must-read for fantasy fans
Terry is one of my favorite authors. He builds a world unlike any other and keeps you in stitches the whole time. If you like humor that pokes fun at everything in our world in a very readable and hilarious manner, his series if a must read starting with this book.
A great early Pratchett book that helps lay the foundation of his world. Later ones are even better but gain from having read this one first..
The beginning of Discworld by Terry Pratchet was like visiting the greatest whimsical version of a fantasy world I could have imagined. Proof that humor and serious matters can be wrapped up together.
Terry Pratchett is the best at humor!
