Start a new series in Heartbreaker Bay! San Francisco is the perfect romantic backdrop to this heartwarming friends-to-lovers story that will make you laugh and swoon. Sometimes your heart’s desire is only a wish away. I could not put this down. So great!
Entertaining with enough interesting side characters to make me want to read more of the series.
This is exactly what it says…sweet. It’s a feel-good story about love, family, friends, trust, and realizing that you are enough. Finn has been burned and figures love and The One is a figment of people’s imagination. Pru has learned that she’s so unlovable that no one wants to stick with her. They both may learn that they’re wrong. Jill Shalvis writes in a style that is easy to get lost in. Her characters are engaging, the story moves at a good pace, the setting is always somewhere fun, and the romance is sweet with a side of steam. I don’t think I’ve ever been disappointed with one of her books.
Sweet Little Lies is the perfect beach read. Lighthearted and romantic, you’ll fall in love with the characters and Shalvis’s witty writing. But there are no tears to blur your view of the sunny surf and sand.
Finn and Sean’s O’Riley mother walked out on them when they were ten and three. Their father was a mean drunk, so when he was killed by a drunk driver, when Finn was twenty-one, he gave up his baseball college scholarship and chance for the pros to keep his brother out of foster care. They are now owner’s of a pub, O’Riley’s. To keep them afloat, Finn is all work and no play.
Prudence Harris is a ship captain for SF Bay Tours. Her best friend is Jake, her boss. Her parents also died when she was 18, but she carries around guilt, for her father was the drunk driver who killed and injured many. She has tried to make amends to all, so when she comes to a famous wishing fountain, her wish is for Finn to be happy and find love. She moves into the same building as O’Riley’s, and tells Finn that she is the “Fun Whisper” and her goal is to bring fun into his life. Jake warns her to tell him who she is before they get in too deep, but she hesitates. What happens when she finally tells him?
Like all books by this author the characters are all captivating and the reader is rooting for them to overcome the obstacles that they throw in their own paths.
After a devastating accident takes the lives of Pru’s parents, Pru sets out on a mission to help all of those who were effected by the accident, and selflessly gives almost all she has to make sure that they all have the best chance at getting their lives back on track. Her little mission puts her right in the path of sexy Pub owner Finn O’Riley, after meeting him she realizes that the thing he needs most is to find some happiness in his life, and possibly find someone to share his life with, so she decides to toss a coin in the towns wishing well and make a wish for him to find happiness. She isn’t quite sure the wish will do it’s job, so she also decides to make it her personal mission to infuse some happiness into his life and encourage him to have fun. Not realizing that her little deed could effect the course of her life too…
Finn O’Riley has given up so much of himself to ensure his brother and friends have all that they need, not realizing that his good deed as sucked the fun right out of his life and turned him into a all work, no play kind of guy. His friends all keep trying to get him to jump back into the dating pool, and have some fun, but his incessant need to be in control and keep things running smoothing at his pub keep him from straying from the straight and narrow. It isn’t that he doesn’t want to date anyone it’s just the idea of letting anyone getting too close that scares him… but all that begins to change when he meets Pru.
As soon as I read the synopsis for this one I knew I had to read it, first because it is written by one of my favorite authors, but also because it sounded like quite an entertaining read, and I am happy to report that my initial thoughts were spot on…it was SO GOOD!! Pru and Finn were a match made in literary heaven, their chemistry heated up the pages, and the banter they shared had me grinning like a fool the whole way through!! Ms. Shalvis totally won me over with this one, her creative story line, uniquely crafted characters, and witty one liners treated me to one very exceptional reading experience! This is definitely one read I think everyone should add to the top of their reading lists, Pru and Finn’s story is sure to warm your heart and leave you with a smile on your face!!
This is the first in Jill Shalvis’ Heartbreaker Bay series. I was drawn into it right from the start. It’s full of laughter, friendship and definitely romance. Pru Harris & Finn O’Riley start out as friends but it grows into something more. But she has a secret that could jeopardize everything. Written in true Shalvis form and I’m looking forward to reading the next in the series.
I’ve read every book in this series that has been released so far, and I expect there will be more. This is probably my favorite. Finn and Pru are absolutely lovable and you can’t help getting invested in them as a couple. And I loved the secondary characters too. There’s quite a lot of them which will make the series interesting, and they are already well enough defined in this book to understand them and like them. Eddie is an absolute goldmine for the series and a brilliant character for imparting necessary information in the stories. I love that the characters are a tight knit little family and how they support each other. It’s a really lovely series and lots of fun to read.
This was my first Jill Shalvis book, and I’ve heard great things about her books, so my hopes were high. The story was well written and the characters well-developed, although for some reason I didn’t get totally caught up in the story line. Because of this, I felt it dragged in places. And the dark moment really wasn’t that dark for me. I also may not have gotten totally invested because my favorite trope is enemies to lovers, while this story was friends to lovers. The book is the first in a series, however, and I really enjoyed the excerpt I read for the next book — Willa’s story. That is enemies to lovers. I’m looking forward to checking it out.
Favorite Quotes:
He was her unicorn. He bent low behind the bar for something and an entire row of women seated on the barstools leaned in unison for a better view. Meerkats on parade.
Maybe he hasn’t shaved… That’d keep me from dropping trou. I only shaved from my knees down. My thighs are as hairy as a lumberjack’s chest, which is why I’m wearing capris and not short shorts. You are all welcome.
She didn’t ask how he knew her kryptonite. Everyone she knew worshipped at the magical griddle inside the magical food cart outside their building that a woman named Rayna ran. Pru snatched the bag from Finn and decided to forgive him.
It was Nineties Night. This required copious amounts of glitter, which apparently is like the STD of the craft supplies. Once you use it without protection, you can’t get rid of it… Ever.
“How do they fit?” Finn asked, smiling, enjoying the old man’s discomfort. Eddie rolled his eyes. “Like a cheap castle —no ballroom.”
“She’s so badass,” Willa whispered, staring after her. “I mean look at that dress. She’s badass, kickass, and she has a great ass. It’s really not fair.”
“Pru, can you tell me what’s wrong?” “I think she’s having a seizure,” Mrs. Winslow said helpfully. “Honey, you look a little bit constipated. I suggest a good fart. That always works for me.”
My Review:
This book needs to come with a caution to avoid liquids while reading as I frequently giggle-snorted and also laughed aloud while perusing this cleverly humorous tale. I am totally in awe of Jill Shalvis’s delightfully witty arrangements of words and avariciously covet them all. Every single character was enticing, endearing, magnetically appealing, and cleverly described in a manner that incited a desire to know every little thing about them. I am irrevocably hooked and feeling an inordinate itch to clear my schedule to read this entire series.
I can’t say enough about Jill Shalvis. I haven’t read a single book of hers that I haven’t loved. Her characters are wonderful and I always look forward to how the series includes characters from the other books.
As I’ve read the other books in the Heartbreaker Bay series, I’ve wondered about the infamous Pru and Finn. You don’t have to read these books in any particular order, but I wish I had read this one sooner! I was a little put off by Pru’s name most of the time, but once I read this book, it made total sense.
Pru has an unusual job and an even more unusual dog. She loves them both, but she has no desire to find her true love, or does she? Trying to make up for past transgressions, she has one wrong to make right, Finn O’Riley. She’s going to be his ‘fun whisperer’ if it kills her.
Finn O’Riley wasn’t looking for ‘fun’. He’s running a pub with his younger brother who has enough fun for the both of them. He still can’t drag his eyes away from the new woman who moves into the building and shows up at his pub, though. He’s hardened by life and the things he’s faced, and because of that, he protects his heart to avoid more pain. That is until Pru inserts herself in his life, and his bed.
I liked this original storyline and the way she wrote these two broken characters. She weaved them together until they were one and they both discovered all they needed to heal was each other. There’s no lack of steamy scenes, fun to be had, and happily ever afters in Sweet Little Lies.
This is the beginning of a new series and already I can’t wait for the next book which will be about one of the secondary characters.
This story revolved around Pru and Finn, both with emotional baggage from losing loved ones. They come together due to Pru’s parents causing the death of Finn’s father in a road accident. Pru does her best to make his life better while dealing with her misplaced guilt. It’s a rocky road as Finn is clueless to this and you know crap is going to hit the fan when he thinks that he’s been played.
The story line was smooth and fast paced, the banter between all the characters hilarious at times. Pru and Finn had sizzling chemistry with many swoon worthy moments…ok maybe that was just the description of him. Where are these men in real life?
If you’re a fan of Jill Shalvis you certainly won’t be disappointed in this book, I even cracked up at the chapter headings which involved hashtags.
It’s a must read
