NAILED is a fun, exciting follow-up to ICED. The main character in both books of the Resort to Murder Mystery series is Julienne LaMere, a resort management trainee. NAILED can be read as a standalone; you’ll just be missing some backstory on Julie’s ex-boyfriend Brandon and absentee boyfriend Mason.
I really like Julienne. She’s relatable and easy to root for. The relationship between Julie and her BFF Porsche is well-written, and wonderful to read about. The supporting characters (especially Julie’s “Baker Street Irregulars”) are engaging and believable.
Julie’s skill at getting people to talk and her natural curiosity (which she used in ICED) are put to good use in NAILED by the detective investigating the murder of Kara Caine. Det Larson asks Julie to assist the inquiries as an unofficial “quasi-confidential informant and a kinda-consultant.” I enjoyed watching Julie sleuth and come up with several plausible suspects for Larson to investigate.
The fast-moving plot made sense, and drew me in from the start. The detailed descriptions of the blizzard made me feel like I was there in Vail with Julie and Porsche. Author Avery Daniels kept me guessing until the end. I am looking forward to the next Resort to Murder Mystery, SPIKED. I’m eager to learn what happens with Julie and a certain someone.
Note: I received a complimentary copy of NAILED in exchange for my honest review. All opinions shared are 100% my own.
This book was nothing short of amazing! A great engaging story that keeps you turning the pages from the beginning to end. The story and characters a very well developed and make you feel like you are right there in the thick of things! Fabulous descriptors bring the book alive as you follow along on business trip turned murder investigation with the welcome addition of a little bit of romance, as you would love to see in any cozy mystery. ARC – I voluntarily offered to review this book with no obligations and my opinions are honest
Julienne was just trying to enjoy this management conference.
How was she to know that murder was going to happen there?
To complicate matters, a blizzard strands the guests w/ the killer.
What will Julienne do?
She will solve the mystery of course!
The storytelling + the character’s build were awesome!
It has all the ingredients that you need for a great book!
I had a great time reading ICED, the first mystery in this series. This one was even better! A very well plotted mystery set in a resort in Vail, Colorado.
Thanks to the perfect description of the resort and the characters I felt as if I was right there with Julienne and Porsche investigating the murder. Their way of gossiping to get information was a lot of fun.
The book kept me engaged from the beginning right to the end and surprising reveal. There were no slow or boring times in this story. It kept flowing at a very good pace.
I requested this book from NetGalley and am thankful that Xpresso Book Tours and the author provided me with an advance copy.
“Nailed” earns 5/5 Snow-covered Crime Scenes…Murderously Fun!
Once again I was totally engaged in Avery Daniels’ clever mystery. Julienne is taking her job seriously, so when instead of her boss she is sent to a resort management conference in Vail, Colorado, she is very eager to sharpen her skills, network, and take lots of notes, but investigating a murder was not on the conference schedule. With her BFF Porsche in tow, they have their lovely evening, along with that of an ex-husband and his girlfriend and a former client, his wife, and son, interrupted. Kara Caine, realtor extraordinaire, comes in forcefully grabbing everyone’s attention..no one seems pleased. And the next morning when she is found dead in the snow, Julienne gets roped into the investigation. Ok, maybe roped is not accurate. The lead detective makes her an unofficial official confidential informant/consultant. He recognizes she has a knack and needs her to uncover the truth amidst the gossip, the innuendo, and the evasion.
I was very engaged by her description of the environment, the people, and the very inclement weather making me a bit claustrophobic with all the talk of the snow storm, roads closed, and everyone staying indoors. But she didn’t rely on just the narrative including entertaining banter between Julienne and her BFF and the informal interrogations with other witnesses and suspects. The essence of a “page turner.” With a plethora of rich characters to support her amateur investigation, not-so-smooth romantic entanglements, and some perilous moments, Julienne is proving to be a favorite “cozy” character: vulnerable, but strong. Fans of Avery’s book one Iced will be thrilled, and newbies need not shy away since enough information is provided, no spoilers, on background and character connections to make it easy to join in. Although there are subtle nuisances and some personal events that you may want to experience by reading book one first. But however you join in, my recommendation is to “join in.”
I enjoyed this cozy mystery. I like the fact that everybody got snowed in with a killer on the loose, it made it an unusual mystery and gave the author a chance to spook everyone with horror films reference. The characters are great and I liked the way they went about solving the case by setting up gossip spies. The mystery it’s self was interesting and with plenty of suspects it kept you guessing until the end. This is book two and having listened to book one iced, I was pleased to see the story continue with the same cast of characters, fun, high-jinks and humour.
Julienne at the last minute takes her boss place at a hotelier convention in the Rocky Mountains, taking her best friend along for the company because her boy friend is off doing his bodyguard thing. The days filled up with meeting she hoped to fill her nights with good food and take advantage of the hotel’s amenities but things don’t turn out that way when the obnoxious lady who was so rude in the restaurant is found dead the next morning. The police have plenty of witnesses to herbal behaviour but it is only Julienne that pass them on and by doing so promote the detective to enlist her help as his eyes and ears. When everybody gets trapped in the hotel by a major blizzard tension is high knowing that they are trapped with a killer but it is when a second body is found that the police themselves stretched to braking point. Julienne will have to recruit her own eyes and ears of she wants to caught the killer before the snow stops. At the same time can she also stop her friend from getting her heart broken by the handsome detective.
I was given this free review copy book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
I love how Julie can get a group of people, not only behind her, but also helping her in flushing out killers. During the stay at Alpine Sun Resort, Julie gets crushed on by a teenage boy and manages to not break his heart, since she does have a kind-of boyfriend. Even while Julie is away, she still talks with her senior group of sleuths.
Here Porsche finds she may want more than just a few quick turns with a man – though she may not like the outcome at the end.
Great story with well detailed characters.
I am an ARC ready, but happy to share my honest opinion of the book.
Julienne and her friend Porsche are at a resort in the Rockies for the annual Resort Management Conference. The next day someone dies and they are snowed in. They and a motley crew of employees and guest become the eyes and ears for detective as he and the rest of the police force deal with accidents and other folks snowed in.
Julienne again shows she’s smart and resourceful. She puts her ability to get people talking to good use both in her conference classes and with other guests. Porsche participates in the activities meant to curb cabin fever while listening to what folks are talking about, prompting when she needs to.
My only disappointment is that the Conference organizers didn’t engage the attendees more with the resort management. Instead of merely suggesting activities it seems this was a prime opportunity for hands on real-life training and a way for Julienne to find more inside information.
