Folksy and fresh, endearing and affecting, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe is a now-classic novel about two women: Evelyn, who’s in the sad slump of middle age, and gray-headed Mrs. Threadgoode, who’s telling her life story. Her tale includes two more women—the irrepressibly daredevilish tomboy Idgie and her friend Ruth—who back in the thirties ran a little place in Whistle Stop, … Whistle Stop, Alabama, offering good coffee, southern barbecue, and all kinds of love and laughter—even an occasional murder. And as the past unfolds, the present will never be quite the same again.

I actually liked the movie better
A fun read but much more than that. A truly moving story of real people whose lives inspire us to love.
This book is a favorite that I read over and over.
The classic southern read. If you haven’t read this book then do it now.
After falling in love with the movie many years ago, I have had this book on my to-be-read list for a long time. I ended up listening to the audiobook. And I believe I enjoyed it even more than reading a paper/ebook version. The narration was spot on with the Southern accent and lingo.
While the book is a little slow to draw you in at the …
Loved it, when I read it years ago and it’s still a wonderful read!
The things portrayed in this book were entertaining, easy to identify with & funny in so many ways. It was a little different from the movie, but I enjoyed them both.
Excellent
So much more than the movie!
Anything by this author is phenomenal. She writes with amazing style, heart, depth and insight. Fannie draws you into the town and into the lives of the characters and they become friends and neighbors.
While Fannie Flagg is usually humerous, I didn’t find this book funny at all and gave up after reading about 1/3.
Fannie Flagg’s books are wonderful, and this one does not disappoint. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll enjoy every page.
Wonderful read!
What a fun book to read! The characters come alive to make this most entertaining!
loved the people in the book very entertaining
I read it four times
One of the best of all time!
Just like the movie.
Great book, easy to read, loved all the characters, great story line. Movie was excellent too.
I loved this book. I couldn’t put it down, even when my eyes got tired. I could “see” each of the characters and even though I didn’t grow up in the south, my own small town memories floated up through the pages. I laughed and cried, over the lifetime of these characters. It touched a chord many share, in the loss of times that now seem …
