Folksy and fresh, endearing and affecting, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe is a now-classic novel about two women: Evelyn, who’s in the sad slump of middle age, and gray-headed Mrs. Threadgoode, who’s telling her life story. Her tale includes two more women—the irrepressibly daredevilish tomboy Idgie and her friend Ruth—who back in the thirties ran a little place in Whistle Stop, … Whistle Stop, Alabama, offering good coffee, southern barbecue, and all kinds of love and laughter—even an occasional murder. And as the past unfolds, the present will never be quite the same again.

“Funny and macabre.”—The Washington Post

It’s a laugh out loud book. Even if you saw the movie version, you owe it to yourself to read it. Find yourself worrying, read this book. Smiling and laughing is supposed to be good for your health, so this is a very healthy book if so! Escape to laughter with this one. Don’t read before bed. My giggles kept me awake! Enjoy!
This is such an enjoyable read. It touches the heart with honesty and the writer’s gift of understanding people. I highly recommend it.
This is one of my very favorite books. Great female leads. Great period story. It’s nostalgic, witty, funny, sad, melancholy and exciting from one page to the next. One of the very best reads a female could ever read. You’ll never forget this story.
I love those quaint little town people, they all have stories to tell & Fannie Flagg tell them with all her heart!!
I have seen this movie many times and finally decided to read the book and see how different the two are. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. Although the book goes into more detail about the people of Whistle Stop, the movie does follow the book pretty well. The changes that were made for the movie do not affect the story.
Idgie and Ruth …
I loved this book. The characters were fully realized and I also loved the friendship that developed between the two main women in the story Highly recommend
Chances are that I’ll never visit the state of Alabama in the United States. And it’s absolutely certain that I’ll never travel back in time, and see Alabama little towns of the 30ies. But thanks to Fannie Flagg and her book “Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe” I was transported into both, and that was a delightful journey.
Like almost …
Funny & charming characters
A wonderful book that leaves the reader with the wish that the book had not ended.
One of the best books I’ve ever read. The movie was charming, but the book is so much richer. It’s one that I will re-read countless times over.
A must read.
This book about friendship and finding your courage is one of my favorites
Country cooking!
I just loved this book. Didn’t want it to end. It’s a story written in the folksy style of ‘Tales from Lake Wobegon” with marvelous characters, a look into Southern culture, poetic justice and heartwarming humor. A wonderful read with some real life lessons that we could use in today’s toxic environment.
Love everything Fannie Mae rights.
Probably my favorite of all Fanny Flagg’s marvelous novels. I loved the way she depicted the relationship between the two women, Idgy and Ruth. The movie is great; the novel is even better.
Fannie Flagg never disappoints
I loved the movie. So much better than the book. Not really enjoying it.
Just delightful! Wonderful characters and a great story.
The one that started it all for me. I will read anything Fanny Flagg writes. Her characters are so believable, and you can’t help caring for (most) of them!
