Moments after Lisbeth is born, she’s taken from her mother and handed over to an enslaved wet nurse, Mattie, a young mother separated from her own infant son in order to care for her tiny charge. Thus begins an intense relationship that will shape both of their lives for decades to come. Though Lisbeth leads a life of privilege, she finds nothing but loneliness in the company of her overwhelmed … overwhelmed mother and her distant, slave-owning father. As she grows older, Mattie becomes more like family to Lisbeth than her own kin and the girl’s visits to the slaves’ quarters—and their lively and loving community—bring them closer together than ever. But can two women in such disparate circumstances form a bond like theirs without consequence? This deeply moving tale of unlikely love traces the journey of these very different women as each searches for freedom and dignity.

Yellow Crocus is a moving story about the relationship between a privileged white southern girl and her wet nurse – – a slave taken from her own maternal responsibilities with her newborn to care for the Master’s infant daughter. The author does a wonderful job in developing the two main characters; by the end of the novel, we know them well. I …
I happen to be friends with the author of this beautiful, heartfelt book, so I dug in with gusto when she gifted me a copy. Now I understand why more than a million copies have sold, and this book has become a true Amazon treasure. It tells the story of an Antebellum slave in the deep south who bonds with the white baby she nurses, and how that …
This was a moving tale, one that I’d read again.
Love the story line for this book. Most of the book’s setting occurs a few years before slaves were freed, and you several view of those impacted: slaves, abolitionists, and slave owners. But what permeates through it all is the love the Lisbeth and Mattie. It’s a must read.
This is an excellent book. The story shows that family is not always only by blood. That racism and prejudice are learned behaviors that can be un-learned and yet sometimes expectations and pressure overshadow what is right.
I experienced so many emotions listening to this book! Not always pleasant but very interesting. The narration was excellent as was the story. I could hardly stand to put it down. Definitely a must read!!! I’ll be looking for more from the author and narrator, outstanding!
Really enjoyed the characters and storyline. Sad, but inspiring
For a first novel, Yellow Crocus is quite an accomplishment!

Couldn’t put it down. Very thought provoking .
I loved this book which is historical fiction. The characters were wonderful and believable . The harsh reality of slavery is not easy but I feel that is important to know about. There is a sequel too that is so good!
