#1 NATIONAL BESTSELLERAt twenty-two, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother’s death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life. With no experience or training, driven only by blind will, she would hike more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest … the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State—and she would do it alone. Told with suspense and style, sparkling with warmth and humor, Wild powerfully captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddened, strengthened, and ultimately healed her.

Makes you feel totally involved with the book
I think this book is delivered in a way that pulls the reader through some of the crazy the author experienced. At times, the reader will be amazed and at other points the reader will want to throttle the author for being extremely stupid and making bad choices and overly risky decisions. But, you will be pulled right along on this trek, and …
This was an interesting and thought-provoking read. I love travelogue books, usually because they teach me about a place I’ve never been to (and maybe never will), but this one adds an emotional layer that I wasn’t quite expecting. The author decides to hike a big chunk of the PCT, but turns out to be terribly unprepared in the beginning, despite …
Dragged out but enjoyed the movie, after reading the book
Loved this book. Gave a copy to both of my daughters. Cheryl Strayed is a brave woman and a wonderful, insightful writer.
Great book I felt like I was on the hike too. Kept my interest wondering what would happen next.
This one sticks with you for a long time.
The backstory drop of information made the book a slow start. Then the author dropped one bit at a time. This helped the pace and the point of why the main character went on the 100+ day walk.
Being a avid outdoorsman, backpacker I could relate to so well to the frustrations wonders and people events on and off the trail.
Woman on a journey, both physically and emotionally.
Also read a while ago and although I liked it, I didn’t like main character until about half way through. I guess that’s part of the story though, she becomes a better person because of the journey.
As soon as I flipped the first page of this book, I was hooked. The way the author tells the story almost makes you feel like you’re right on the trail as well. I have read this book so many times over again and it never fails to get old. I would highly recommend it for anyone wanting to read a work like this.
The only way around a problem is to go straight through it, and this books shows you the path that leads to the personal evolution of your soul. It’s hard work, but SO worth it!
Strayed’s book will inspire you to reach for brave, to do the work on yourself that will help you become the person you long to be. Victim-free is the path to …
I had first watch the movie not knowing it was based on the book. I really liked the movie and found it intriguing. I wanted to read the book after seeing the movie because I wanted more and knew the book would tell so much more. Cheryl’s life was quickly going in a downward spiral. I loved the person she became and the healing she got after …
Average writing and not really a wild experience as trekking stories go. Basically a travelogue and lots of ruminating about ordinary life experiences. Sure didn’t measure up to the hype, but more power to her.
Authentic. I backpacked in the Sierras for 30 years. Her learning experiences are useful for new hikers to know. The author doesn’t know how to deal with men when alone and it just adds to some women’s male-phobias. But perhaps it was included to add some sexual thrill. She should learn how to use a knife. I liked the rest of the book. Even …
The stories on the trail are great. The stories of her personal life made me irritated at times.
As an occasional hiker, I am awed at Cheryl Strayed’s accomplishment. A harrowing journey on the Pacific Rim Trail of both physical and spiritual dimension. An inspiration for anyone stuck in a rut of depressed, river of no return, mentality.
Rather unmemorable despite all the hype
This is one of my favorite books of all time. I am merely a day hiker and casual camper, but have done enough to know the author took on an arduous, life-changing journey and find it amazing that she made it through. I laughed until I cried over some of her early experiences, watching her prepare for the trip and gradually learn what she was …
