A runaway spell is the most dangerous weapon of allThe sea is the only life Juan’s ever known—not counting the decade he spent as a Vampire. Those years gave him a healthy aversion for anything supernatural, but he’s a shifter now. It’s way better than being one of the undead, but he still doesn’t trust magic. Paired up with Aura to teach him, he falls and falls hard, but she spurns his advances.… but she spurns his advances.
A history professor before the cataclysm, Aura deals in prophecies for her shifter pack. Juan is one hell of an attractive package, but he left a string of broken hearts during his years as chief navigator on cruise ships. She’d be an idiot to sign on for a fling. She has enough problems without adding a broken heart to them.
What began as an exploratory mission to see if anything is left of the world turns sour fast. A Vampire attack, a possessed priest, and a gateway to Hell mean fallout from the spell gone bad that pinned them in South America is far from gone. Retreat is tempting, but nowhere is safe. Surrounded by hardship, they sail on. Evil is leaching in from somewhere, and they have to find the breach.

This second book in the Bitter Harvest series by Ann Gimpel continued to hold this reader’s attention with its suspenseful action and adventure into the unknown by its main characters. Of course it involved the usual vampires and demons as some of the villains faced. The action is both physical and spiritual and magical. The author does start pairing off the shifters with the former vampire men, which lead the reader to foresee what some of the future books in this series might look like. I will definitely be adding them to my TBR file. This is a very late voluntary review of a free copy of this book.
Juan was a chief navigator on cruise ships before the Cataclysm, he was captured turned into a vamp and after a group of shifters and vamps worked together he is no longer a vampire but a shifter with a mountain cat. He’s attracted to Aura an historian, she’s bonded with a mountain lion and deals with prophecies. It’s been two months since their group escaped Ushuaia. Their group has two encounters with others proving the evil from the Cataclysm has not been defeated and they must work to learn their magic and how to overcome these new enemies. Lots of things going on with these survivors as they try to learn about being shifters and to work together and support each other. I would have liked more of the couple’s story, there was some dangling storylines which I’m assuming will be resolved in future books.
Wow !!! Book 2 of the Bitter Harvest series is jam packed with unexpected surprises. It appears that the reversal spell was too late to safe the world outside of Ushuaia; as expected and hoped by the characters in Deceived (book 1). The group of shifters have sailed from port to check out other locations for survivors and they discover that unknown evil and horrors have spread. They must fight to save not only themselves, but those few they find along the way, maybe the rest of humanity as well. It appears that the “cataclysm” had the power to release such evil upon the world that soon it could be all that will be left. We will have loss of friends and loved ones, but among the sorrow, pain and desperation, love will also be found. There is not enough reading between the lines to give you the complete range of action and feelings within the pages of Twisted. You must get this book to continue on this journey to see what this small crew of fighters must overcome. If you have yet to start the journey, well don’t wait a minute more.
This is an adventurous tale of the sometimes treacherous journey of a group of friends. The battle they are waging together against evil is real. It is amazing to me how the author can write such an all-consuming plot, as the characters learn to understand their unique gifts so does the reader. The romance sweetens the pot a little but the main focus here is their struggle to right a world that the creatures of Hell has overtaken, their sacrifice and compassion is great considering humankind rejects paranormals’ yet they continue to fight. Very intense, action-packed story.
Action, adventure, romance, surprises around every corner, emotional roller coaster, wonderful world building, incredible characters, these are some of the words I would use to describe this book. I think this story will appeal to urban fantasy lovers, paranormal romance, and dystopian lovers alike. They are all represented in this one. It is easy to lose yourself in the struggle to survive, the search for other survivors, and the threat of danger that doesn’t always come from the direction you are expecting it to. This is a story that grabs your attention quickly, and it is difficult to walk away from until you finish the last page.
Twisted is the second book in the Bitter Harvest series. The book can be read as a standalone. But it would make more sense if you’ve read Deceived and it does end in a soft cliffhanger for the next book. There is violence and use of magic. The sex is hot and steamy so definitely 18+.
The book blurb adequately describes the storyline so I’m not going to repeat that info here. The author did a great job of explaining what is going on in the world. This is not your typical vampire and shifter story…and then add in other supernatural entities into the mix. The storyline will keep you guessing what twists and turns will be revealed next. It definitely kept me riveted. I look forward to reading the rest of this series.
