In this village, women are not the weaker sex. From an award-winning author comes a post-apocalyptic dystopian story about power, fear, and love… and boys have no mothers. In this village men do as they are told and defiance is severely punished.
This is the only life Wilderness has ever known, but when Jameson is brought in from the outside to be her husband, everything she thought she knew about strength and love is tested. As they struggle to find their place in the village, they suddenly find themselves face to face with outsiders who threaten to destroy everything they love, and it doesn’t take long to realize that they will have to work together, men and women alike, if they want to survive.
Tribe of Daughters is marvelous, unique, emotionally moving, amazing, and fascinating, reviewers enthuse, calling author Kate L. Mary a master of world-building. “Everything about this science fiction novel – the possibilities, the plot, the characters, the physical, mental, sexual and cultural concepts, and the writing style fired my imagination and compelled me to keep reading page after page until the book was finished,” says Viga Boland for Readers’ Favorite.

4 Wild Jameson Filled Stars!!!
Talk about crazy!!! If you’re looking for a book with a storyline that you’ve never read before, then stop because Tribe of Daughters is that book.
Women are on top of the food chain in this village. When the plague hit seventy years ago life as everyone knew was over.
Wilderness’s ancestors were held against their will and were beaten, tortured and everything else you can imagine. When they were able to escape they moved into the mountains secluded and have survived since. They swore to never let a man hurt them again.
The women and men live separate from each other in this village. Men are used for certain things. They’re not allowed in the women’s part without permission. These women will do anything to stay strong.
In order to keep strong they don’t crossbreed. Once every five years the warriors go out and bring back a few strong, healthy men to be wed by the next set of women.
The women of this tribes job is to give birth to the next generation of strong women. If they give birth to boys they keep them until they can be weened and then sent to live with the other men. But, they’re not called man, son or brother. If they’re born there in the village they’re known as yielding and if they’re an outsider they’re a foundling.
Wilderness is getting her husband at this gleaning. Wilderness has a lot on her shoulders. Wilderness is the next High Elder after her mom Raven. Like Wilderness, her mom married a foundling, Zachariah. Like Raven, Wilderness will be expected to teach her husband the ways of their village.
Jameson went from sleeping in his tent to being captured and brought to a village where the women are in charge. He can’t believe the men agree to living this way. Jameson finds solace in Zachariah who was also an outsider AKA foundling. Jameson doesn’t know how Zachariah lives with his children not knowing exactly who he is to them. The other guys that were brought in with Jameson will do anything to get away. But, Jameson isn’t so sure.
This is still new for Jameson and Wilderness. Unlike the other women Wilderness wants to be around Jameson all the time. He starts to open her eyes to things other then what she’d grown up being taught. Things that the other wives do Wilderness doesn’t agree with.
Once Wilderness and Jameson were married everything the women and men in this village knew and lived by were about to change. Everything was about to either get really bad for everybody or change them for the better.
Wilderness I really liked from the beginning. She wasn’t afraid to listen to her gut when it came to Jameson. I just wished she spoke up to her mom more often.
Jameson I loved!!! He knew what the women were doing was wrong but he understood why they were the way they were. He spoke to Wilderness and showed her things could be so different. He knew he was in love with her and he knew when they had their own children he couldn’t standby and pretend they didn’t mean anything to him. But, for Wilderness he’d do anything she’d wanted.
This is unlike anything I’ve ever read and I read a lot! Kate L. Mary is an author I love to read bc everything she writes is different and so entertaining I don’t want to put my kindle down. I’m looking forward to her next release!
As if I’m surprised, Kate L. Mary has done it again. Every book I’ve read by her has proven over and over, that she is an incredible world builder. You really feel as if you’ve been transported into her stories. Tribe of Daughters is no different in this aspect.
This novel is full of rich culture. It is clear to me that Kate L. Mary worked very hard to craft a society that felt real. This feels very real. Even though it is a dystopian novel, it’s believable that if this were the way the world was, this is probably how people would react.
Wilderness is a strong character. She is not just accepting of the ways, and challenges the way her society is run. I love strong women MCs, and that is another thing Kate L. Mary excels at.
I’m very, very impressed with this novel. It’s unlike anything I’ve read, and I highly recommend checking it out.
*I received a copy of this book as part of a blog tour. All opinions are my own.*
Tribe of Daughters was a good read by Kate L. Mary. Deep in the mountains, a matriarchal society has thrived for the last seventy years. In this village men only exist in order to serve women and if they defy, they are severely punished. Wilderness has ever only known this life, when Jameson is brought in from outside to be her husband. A group of outsiders threatens everything and will hopefully change everything for the best. I enjoyed reading this book and can’t wait to read more by the author.
Many years ago a plague destroyed the world and a group of women decide to move to the mountains and start a new world. A world where they are in control of the men.
In this new world that they created for their selves, the women are in charge. The men had their own living quarters away from the women. The men were not allowed in the women’s quarters unless invited and usually only at night until the deed was done and then they were sent on their merry way back to their own living quarters.
The women are in control and the men have to do as the women say or face the consequence which could be deadly for them.
If a male child was born the women gave the child to the men to take care of when the child was old enough to leave the female that is. The female child stays with the female to take care of so she can show her how to be a hunter and a warrior.
Everything is going fine until the day girl meets boy and girl falls in love with boy and girl no longer wants to be separated from boy.
One day girl is out hunting when she runs into a couple of men from town. The meeting of these two men may change the way of life for this tribe of women. What happened to their ancestors all those years ago may become their fate once again.
I love books set in a dystopian or apocalyptic world for some reason I can’t seem to get enough of them I just seem to want more and more of them and Tribe of Daughters is a great addition to this world. Tribe of Daughters threw in a new twist on its world with the women being on top and the ones taking over and ruling over the men. It sort of reminded of the books I use to read a long time ago that were about Indians where they captured women and made them their wives but with the roles reversed.
Tribe of Daughter held my attention from the first page until the last page. It kept me on the edge of my seat wanting to know what or where the characters were going next and what they would do. I loved learning about this new world and would really love to know more about the characters and their world and how they may evolve.
I highly recommend Tribe of Daughters to anyone looking for a new, different kind of dystopian or apocalyptic story.
Challenging and necessary!
This book hooked me right from the start! I immediately latched onto the voice of Wilderness. Kate does a remarkable job of bringing the world and tribe of Wilderness to life while hitting on some very intense issues and the struggle of masculinity and femininity and how women and men should strive for equality and not violence. I thoroughly enjoyed this challenging read and will recommend to anyone
Dark and powerful…
Tribe of Daughters by Kate L. Mary and narrated by Nikki Zakocs is a powerful story not for the faint of heart. Highly recommend if you are new to Kate’s books or looking for a darker dystopian story.
What’s it about? Jameson is on a business trip when he is abducted by a group of women. They are unlike any women he has met before- they live in the forest, have no contact with outsiders, hunt their own food, build their own shelters, the men’s only purpose is to serve the women and provide variations into their offspring (the background is given not too far in as to why things are the way they are). If the men fail to do as asked or fail to follow the rules, they are beaten or killed depending on the crime. As Jameson acclimates to a new way of life, he is picked by the tribal leaders daughter Wilderness, to be hers. They grow fond of each other resulting in challenges to long held traditions and when the group is threatened, the men and women must come together or face death. Yes, there is a lot more but keeping spoilers to a minimum.
Some parts were difficult to listen to, while some were heartwarming, and some heartbreaking. There are lessons to be learned if you chose to take that route, otherwise just sit back and appreciate the story as it is well-written and absorbing. The story changes viewpoints between Jameson and Wilderness and you will have no problem knowing whose turn it is. I finished this story five days ago and I’m still thinking about it and trying to figure out how to review it in a way that will give it justice. With that being said, I highly recommend and you should definitely give this book a listen. This would also be a good choice for a book club as many discussions can be had.
The narrator, Nikki Zakocs, was good overall. It took me a couple chapters to adjust to Jameson’s voice, but when I did, it was fine in the long run (could just be me and my preference). 4 ½ stars for narration.
“She is everything I am destined to be but so much stronger than I am in every way and I have no idea how I will ever be able to walk in her footsteps without falling.”~ Wilderness thinking about her mother.
A couple of the thoughts I had while listening: power corrupts regardless of gender, if women did the things men do (relax folks, I’m not saying all men or all women), and how our actions and choices set events in motion and how they shape our society.
Parental guidance/trigger warnings: This is not a story for the faint of heart. It contains violence, death, drugging of males for sex, sex trafficking, hunting animals for food, whippings, a dog fight, kidnapping, rape, casting aside children due to gender, and similar elements.
*I was given a free review copy of the audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. Thank you for allowing me to listen and review the book!
Terrific Story & Audible Listen Fascinating & Heartfelt!
Tribe of Daughters
By: Kate L. Mary
Narrated by: Nikki Zakocs
Kate L. Mary is a talented and amazing author, she has a great ability to tell stories that are fascinating and mind-blowing. The original storylines are interesting & imaginative, I was hooked in right from the start. The author’s descriptive writing brings you along side the characters, you have a glimpse of what they are thinking, feeling and seeing. Great character development and world building, the world dynamics are like no other. Set in the future, post apocalyptic the survivors are starting to rebuild their lives. Jameson is with several men heading to work on fixing rundown railways, the group of men are attacked, some killed some abducted and brought back to a settlement in the mountains. The abductors are all woman, they they have isolated themselves from the world, built their settlement from the ground up, divided into the two villages, one for the woman who rule, the other for the males who have their purpose. I adored Wilderness, her strength, willingness to listen and her determination to stand by what she believed in. Jameson, my next favorite, he had a good head on his shoulders and was great with Wilderness. This book just wowed me, it is so well plotted, there is never a dull moment with plenty of drama, angst, some twists and a great build up to trust and love. Thank you Kate L. Mary for another fantastic story and for bringing me into a world so different than the one I know. It was great to visit this bizarre world, learn all about it, the reasons why they created such a life for themselves, how generations follow and fall right in until finally realizing the error of their ways.
I listened to the Audible edition, Nikki Zakocs is a terrific narrator and voice artist. She brings the characters to life, gives each their own voice and personality, as well as heart and attitude. She sets the perfect tone for the story and does a great job projecting the emotions of the characters into her performance. She is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for this great listen
I really loved this book. This author is relatively new to me and this genre is unlike what I usually am into. I was pleasantly surprised and can see why this book is an award winner. The story centers around a group of people isolated from the rest of humanity deep in a forested area. Here’s where the story makes an odd turn….ALL the women are in charge while the males of the group are subservient to the females and even live in an adjacent village, only upon being invited can the men enter the females village. Imagine a world where the main function of men are to tend the fields and take are of the animals…oh yes and to be chosen as “Husbands” and mate with said females to provide more daughters. Keeping in mind there are no fathers, brothers or sons. Every five years “warriors” of the female village search the forest for males to help provide to their gene pool. Our main female character Wilderness and she chooses Jameson (a new recruit and hero of the story). When outsiders threaten this group they must work together or all will be lost.
There are many valuable lessons learned in this tale of cruelty, trust, family, love and romance. You learn that there are good and evil people of both sexes, the importance of teamwork and the joy of family. Kate L. Mary did an excellent job providing the reader with likable characters and an interesting world full of hope for future generations.
The novel is set 70 years after a plague wiped out most of the population, and takes place in a strange village up a mountainside – a matriarchal society, in which the men do as they’re told, and women choose husbands to make more daughters from the ‘yieldlings’ within the village (men who have grown up there), or ‘foundlings’ – men from outside, who are kidnapped.
The story starts when Jameson is abducted along with 4 other members of a working party. He is chosen as a husband by Wilderness, the daughter of the village Elder. The story is told in the alternate POV chapters of Jameson and Wilderness.
When I first started reading this, I thought, oh, this is fun – a society in which women make men feel as unimportant as the men of the past used to make women feel; some of the parallels amused me, as I saw the foundlings’ outrage about aspects of their new lives that the women of history put up with, without question, for hundreds of years. But as the story when on, I saw how sinister it was, and how it was no better than any patriarchal society of the past. Really, it’s a story about control, and its evils. Jameson decides to stick with it, as his life back in the post-apocalyptic city wasn’t so great, either, and he tries to teach Wilderness that this way of living is far from utopian.
I liked the story a lot; it’s original, and Kate Mary’s books are always so readable. At first I was a bit unsure about aspects of the world left behind, which is only talked about in vague retrospect, though we do see more evidence later, and of course all post-apocalyptic writers see the effects of disaster differently; no one knows how it actually would be. I was also unsure about the way the villagers talked – in just 70 years they had gone back to talking like something out of a Jane Austen novel, at times, saying things like ‘Good morrow’ to each other, but later on I understood that this was all part of the initial control by the woman who started the community; when Wilderness meets men from the ‘outside’, she thinks how strange it is that they ‘run their words together’.
Yes, it’s good. Recommended!
Every woman should read this, just for the flip of the script. It’s well-written with a good pace and plenty of heart. A great read!
I am a die hard fan of Kate’s but if I wasn’t , this book would have done it! All the little details and character building turn the words into a movie playing in your mind. I highly recommend this book.
Loved this book
One of the better books I’ve read in a while. Hard to put it down. I thought it was realistic and well written.
