Faith. Trust. Triumph.
“I trust Roselle with my life, every day. She trusts me to direct her. And today is no different, except the stakes are higher.” — Michael Hingson
First came the boom?the loud, deep, unapologetic bellow that seemed to erupt from the very core of the earth. Eerily, the majestic high-rise slowly leaned to the south. On the seventy-eighth floor of the World Trade Center’s … seventy-eighth floor of the World Trade Center’s north tower, no alarms sounded, and no one had information about what had happened at 8:46 a.m. on September 11, 2001?what should have been a normal workday for thousands of people. All that was known to the people inside was what they could see out the windows: smoke and fire and millions of pieces of burning paper and other debris falling through the air.
Blind since birth, Michael couldn’t see a thing, but he could hear the sounds of shattering glass, falling debris, and terrified people flooding around him and his guide dog, Roselle. However, Roselle sat calmly beside him. In that moment, Michael chose to trust Roselle’s judgment and not to panic. They are a team.
Thunder Dog allows you entry into the isolated, fume-filled chamber of stairwell B to experience survival through the eyes of a blind man and his beloved guide dog. Live each moment from the second a Boeing 767 hits the north tower, to the harrowing stairwell escape, to dodging death a second time as both towers fold into the earth.
It’s the 9/11 story that will forever change your spirit and your perspective. Thunder Dog illumiates Hingson’s lifelong determination to achieve parity in a sighted world, and how the rare trust between a man and his guide dog can inspire an unshakable faith in each one of us.

A blind man depends on his guide dog to get him out of the World Trade Center them out of Lower Manhattan. Just shows what love and trust can do
Very informative, how a blind man feels in a world where everyone can see. He simply wants to be treated as normal. Very inspirational and insightful. Thought provoking.
It was boring. The author seemed consumed by his blindness.
Loved this heartfelt book in which the author shared his belief in and love for his Seeing Eye dog.
It was a very on depth view of people who escaped the twin towers on 9/11.
Was terrific.
Well told and inspirational story.
This nonfiction account of 9/11 told by Michael Hinson, who was accompanied by his wonderful guide dog that fateful day, showed how his upbringing, his experiences being blind and quick thinking aided him in surviving. I also enjoyed being educated about blindness and the training of guide dogs. Very well written!
I read this close to September 11, 2017. It was a gift from a blind friend. It rebuilt my memories of that fateful day. We should always remember and revere the heroes of that day, two-legged and four-legged.
I really enjoyed this story. Very interesting reading.
A true story about a real live blind man and his best friend on one of the most tragic days in US History–World Trade Center destroyed. Step by Step, floor by floor with jet fuel and uncertainty down every 78 flights of stairs.
The information shared about how blind from birth professional men respond to their situations and life itself needed …
Easy reading. Informational especially regarding the blind community and also technology that helps in every day life both personal and professional.
This is an interesting book about an escape from WTC more than it is about the dog, but it is interesting nonetheless, except for the chapter that was religious preaching. If you skim that, the rest has some merit.
Did not stay on course. The 9/11 theme only lasted about half the book.
A story that focuses more on being blind in a sighted world than what happened on 9/11. It’s an interesting read but I didn’t care for the format of interspersing his life story with leaving the Twin Towers.
I liked it, because it was an amazing story in every way.
A wonderfully written book by an exceptional man! Gives insights into the non-sighted world in which so many live and told with wit and none of the ‘poor me’ displayed by so many. I learned so many new things while following a story I had just briefly acknowledged shortly after it happened. Totally a worthwhile read.
Loved it.
I expected a story about the dog. Instead it was more of a life story of the accomplishments of the author.
A powerful tale of courage and trust. The title is a little misleading. I wish the book had focused more on Roselle, the author’s seeing eye dog.
