Faith. Trust. Triumph.
“I trust Roselle with my life, every day. She trusts me to direct her. And today is no different, except the stakes are higher.” — Michael Hingson
First came the boom?the loud, deep, unapologetic bellow that seemed to erupt from the very core of the earth. Eerily, the majestic high-rise slowly leaned to the south. On the seventy-eighth floor of the World Trade Center’s … seventy-eighth floor of the World Trade Center’s north tower, no alarms sounded, and no one had information about what had happened at 8:46 a.m. on September 11, 2001?what should have been a normal workday for thousands of people. All that was known to the people inside was what they could see out the windows: smoke and fire and millions of pieces of burning paper and other debris falling through the air.
Blind since birth, Michael couldn’t see a thing, but he could hear the sounds of shattering glass, falling debris, and terrified people flooding around him and his guide dog, Roselle. However, Roselle sat calmly beside him. In that moment, Michael chose to trust Roselle’s judgment and not to panic. They are a team.
Thunder Dog allows you entry into the isolated, fume-filled chamber of stairwell B to experience survival through the eyes of a blind man and his beloved guide dog. Live each moment from the second a Boeing 767 hits the north tower, to the harrowing stairwell escape, to dodging death a second time as both towers fold into the earth.
It’s the 9/11 story that will forever change your spirit and your perspective. Thunder Dog illumiates Hingson’s lifelong determination to achieve parity in a sighted world, and how the rare trust between a man and his guide dog can inspire an unshakable faith in each one of us.

Loved reading the story and was strongly touched by the narrative. Having witnessed 9-11 from a distance, the story placed me right into that stairwell, making my way down from the 78th floor. I also loved learning more about the challenges and advances that now assist blind people in dealing with a sighted world. And … I loved hearing about the …
This is a post 9/11 book but, with a different perspective. If you are into honoring those, who are blind and, facilitated with being accompanied with canine companions, this is the book for you. If you are interested in a different perspective, of 9/11, this is a book for you. If you want insight as to how the handicapped individuals dwelt, …
Puts you right there during the Twin Towers disaster. Also puts a new light on what blind people face every day not to mention how others view them. Wonderful man, dog, and book.
This book should be required reading in every single classroom globally. I loved this book. Expertly written about one of the single most tragedies in
America and a story of survival.
You will admire and respect this man and his incredibly wise family, and love his dog. Wonderful information about the blind community and culture. I couldn’t put …
This book lets the reader really feel what it is like to be blind. It also shows how dogs can change your world. The truth of what it was like to be in the World Trade buildings on 9-11 was extraordinary! I would hope everyone could read this book.
Thoroughly enjoyed the description and character of his loyal dog!
Inspiring!
The whole process in getting a seeing eye dog trained was interesting. I loved reading about the connection between the dogs and their masters. What a scary day it must have been on 9/11 as they made their way out of the tower.
A learning story of the life of the blind and the value of guide dogs.
This was a great read. Opened my eyes to what blind people are truly capable of. Loved it.
It was informative. I learned about blind individuals and their marvelous guide dogs
Probable the best book I have ever read. I was so drawn in by the 1st person telling of a day we shall never forget.
Great, inspirational read
Inspiring book
Thunder Dog gives the reader a heart pounding read. The dog and his master are both heroes.
This is a most amazing biography of a man who is a blind engineer and his guide dog not only surviving 9-11 and the downfall of the towers in which he works but also helping others to escape. His survival skills surpassed my imagination. In addition, Michael Hingson shares his life story and provides readers with new appreciation for his skills …
The blurb is a bit misleading: the author and his guide dog did escape from the World Trade Center on 9/11 by walking down 78 stories — but that’s not the real story of this book. The real story is about how a person blinded shortly after birth by his medical treatment was brought up to believe he could do (nearly) everything a sighted person …
Enlightening What courage !!
This is a riveting true story about a blind man and his dog who had the misfortune of showing up to work early on the 78th floor of the North World Trade Tower on September 1, 2001. Masterfully told, this is a story of courage and determination you don’t want to miss.
