When Angela met Jason Powell while catering a dinner party in East Hampton, she assumed their romance would be a short-lived fling, like so many relationships between locals and summer visitors. To her surprise, Jason, a brilliant economics professor at NYU, had other plans, and they married the following summer. For Angela, the marriage turned out to be a chance to reboot her life. She and her son were finally able to move out of her mother’s home to Manhattan, where no one knew about her tragic past.
Six years later, thanks to a bestselling book and a growing media career, Jason has become a cultural lightning rod, placing Angela near the spotlight she worked so carefully to avoid. When a college intern makes an accusation against Jason, and another woman, Kerry Lynch, comes forward with an even more troubling allegation, their perfect life begins to unravel. Jason insists he is innocent, and Angela believes him. But when Kerry disappears, Angela is forced to take a closer look—at both the man she married and the women she chose not to believe.
This much-anticipated follow-up to Burke’s Edgar-nominated The Ex asks how far a wife will go to protect the man she loves: Will she stand by his side, even if he drags her down with him?

Although I enjoyed reading this book I’m always disappointed when I can guess what the twist will be half way through. It was an easy read, fairly enjoyable, but not quite enough of a surprise ending. Will probably read more of her work, but this was good, not great.
I could not put this book down! It is everything a good mystery book should be.
great book
I liked the unexpected ending.
Totally engaging and well written – Original and unique. This is one of the best books from a list of 14 good books that I have recently read. One of three 5 star books!
Alafair Burke can be counted on the spin a good tale. This one doesn’t disappoint.
Good read, great pacing, but predictable ending.
This was a great read. I read in one day. I highly recommend.
Different from previous writings/style.
This book is well worth the read. I highly recommend.
Good read
This left you guessing until the end!
This is the first book from Alafair Burke that I read. It left me wanting to read more of her. I couldn’t put this down!
From the outside, Angela and Jason Powell seem to have the life that so many covet. James has his own accounting firm, podcast, and is a distinguished professor at NYU. Angela is the wife that cherishes her son and is always there to lend a hand. While Jason relishes in the spotlight he receives from his success, Angela shies away from publicity due to secrets from her past.
Their world shatters when Jason is accused of sexual harassment from one of his company’s interns. As the events of his life begin to unfold, another woman accuses Jason of rape. These accusations unleash a spiraling of events that slowly unravel the appearance of a perfect life. Angela finds herself doubting so many events and circumstances surrounding her husband’s day to day life. The investigation leads Angela to wonder if she really knew her husband at all.
Secrets begin to unravel in the lives of Angela and Jason. Some lead back to the past that Angela has tried so desperately to keep hidden. What will happen if the public finds out what happened all those years ago? Time is ticking for the couple and the chaos that is swirling around their lives.
The Wife hit my radar courtesy of a fellow avid reader. I will admit – I had never heard of Alafair Burke in the reading world. So – I was a tad bit reluctant to dive into a novel by a ‘new to me’ author. With a string of novels that had been beyond disappointing, I decided I had nothing to lose. Imagine my surprise when I was transported into a story that mixed the bonds of marriage with secrets that would pull me into a tale so sordid that I simply couldn’t put it down.
While I don’t want to give very much of the plot away, I will say this is one of those novels that will really have your brain working on all the intricacies in the details. Ask yourself……what would you do if your husband was accused of the unthinkable? Would you stand by his side? Do you walk away? The decisions that Angela and Jason make will take you on a twisted tale of deceit, wealth, and the desire to hide secrets that were never meant to be known by others.
The ending……that is the sticking point for me. I figured it out prior to the revelations, but I expected more in the scheme of things. After such a compelling ride I wanted more finality. The Wife is a crafty and interwoven tale that will definitely leave you thinking. I highly recommend this book to anyone that is looking for a thrilling read that will take you on a journey that leaves you contemplating how you might react if you find yourself in the same situation.
This was a good read. A MAN will TRY a WOMAN every time!!!!!!
Enjoyed the book and was surprised by the ending.
Sad how a wife wants to believe in her spouse and what she would do for hi
This was one of two beach reads of the summer of 2019. It is a super easy read that if you lounge long enough, you might even finish the book. This book would be perfect for a wine- mom’s book club where they drink more wine than they read books. But the book is interesting enough and has a juicy filled end so stay toon if you don’t forgive it out in the first half.
While I figured out “whodunit” by the end of the first chapter (the author’s title totally gives it away), I certainly didn’t know how, when and where and that was where the author wrote a great story. The story reminds me of a movie I once saw but I can’t remember the name for the life of me. Anyway, it’s sort of a guilty pleasure for me to read stories about faithful wives who get sweet revenge on philandering husbands. The dogs get exactly what they deserve!!! Lol:)
Loved it except I wish there was more to the ending. Hopefully she writes a sequel
Terrific! A page-turner! You’ll never guess the ending!
