Even the strongest man in the world has a weak spot!Magni knows what he wants and he’s used to getting it. As the second in command in the Northlands, he doesn’t care that he comes across as rude or domineering. Asking for permission or apologizing for his actions is for weaker men. Six months ago, Laura was Magni’s sweet and submissive young wife. Tempted to experience the independence of women … independence of women in the Motherlands, and to learn martial arts, she ran away. Now, she’s back. Stronger and more confident than before. Determined not to let a man dominate her, not even the one she once fell in love with and married.
Is there a way for Magni and Laura to be a couple again with her need for independence and his need for control? And can someone as proud as Magni overcome his anger with Laura for leaving him in the first place?

At last we get to read Magni and Laura’s story and it was worth the wait! The title of the book is The Warrior and automatically one would assume it refers to Magni as he is the greatest warrior of the Northlands, but to me Laura is The Warrior as she is physically and mentally strong, but also feminine, caring, protective and trustworthy. Laura is from the Northlands and for years she has been indoctrinated that men are the strong ones, the protectors and rulers over women, until she ran away to the Motherlands where she experienced a different way of life. Loved The Warrior!
So far I have read up to book number five in the series. The Warrior I feel is almost as excellent as her previous books. I say almost because it became a little wordy in the middle but still a 4.75 star book. If you like romance and steam this book is for you.
Story 4.75/5
Steam 5/5
Narration 5++/5
Overall 4.75/5
Received an ARC for my honest review. Elin Peer does not disappoint you with the continuing saga of Magni and Laura. In previous books, we heard the story of Laura going to the Motherlands and leaving Magni to deal with the aftermath. In The Warrior, Laura is back home and Magni gets an unpleasant surprise when he realizes that his wife is not the meek, mild mannered obedient woman he married. Having learnt many things during her time in the Motherlands, she stands her ground and even volunteers to return to the Motherlands to help capture some NMen. What an adventure. Both Laura and Magni grow emotionally and their love grows stronger but it wasn’t easy.
One of the things I especially like about this series are the returning characters, we find out how everyone is doing and growing. Enjoy!
What can I say, I love this woman’s creative writing style. She has yet to disappointment with any of her 15 books she has published thus far. And the long-awaited reunification of Laura and Magni was well worth the wait.
Laura, oh Laura the trouble you have caused for the Motherlands and the Nmen. Thank you. It’s because of you that we owe this journey too. Back in book one The Protector, Laura decided she wanted to stand on her own feet and crossed the border setting Magni into a rage so deep that he then crossed the border but, being unable to retrieve Laura he does the unthinkable and breaks a treaty that has been set in place for I believe 300 years and kidnaps a female Motlander (Name for people of the Motherland). Way to go Magni. So that should catch you for the most part. To really get caught up read the series because it is AMAZING.
The Warrior picks up rather quickly with Elin wasting no time for the duo to reconnect. Which I was pleased to see, I don’t know how much longer I could have waited for the two to essentially battle it out. This book however I felt leaned more towards the sexual components. Not a bad thing. The scenes were well written, there was just so much more than the previous books. Which makes sense considering the couples time apart from each other.
The storyline developed nicely, with Laura still trying to prove that she is as strong as any man even though she is woman. And Magni still being the brute of man he is stuck in gender specific roles. The big difference I notice in Book 5 vs. the other four books is that the past characters while they remain a part of the plot we don’t get to revisit them as much as the other books allowed. But even for the times they did come into play Elin was sure to give us an update as too where the characters stood and how they progress of the integration school was forming.
Being able to not only following the growth of our adult member but our students and teachers aid added the perfect touch allowing Magni to grow and showing Laura that Magni is the softest teddy bear of them all when it comes to the students in particular, the young Mila. There were many times when I wanted to scream at the both of them, when they were together and when they were separated. Both had a way of pushing you to the edge of dislike only to win you over again with the reasoning behind their action. I had a long battle myself with these two extremely stubborn and hard-headed characters. But in the end, you can’t deny the chemistry that these two have. This book shows that even though you and your spouse may not share the same opinion doesn’t mean that a relationship can’t withstand.
I was given this ARC for my honest review. This is the story about Magni and Laura.
Magni Aurelius was brother to the king. At 7ft. Tall and 340lbs., he was the commander of the armed forces and leader of the Huntsmen, an elite unit of the finest warriors the world had ever seen. With his brooding personality and incredible strength, he was the essence of a true alpha Nman. He was an intimidating champion and could silence men with a single scowl.
She’s 20yrs old now, but when Laura was about 10 she had seen Magni and King Khan sparring. Whatever the move at the time was that was Magni was teaching Khan had found Magni continually on the ground bloodied as Khan’s skill improved . Now Laura had been attracted to Magni as long as she could remember so when she witnessed Magni on the ground again she acted as if she were lost and as he walked her back to her parents, she told Magni if he would wait for her to grow up, she would marry him when it was time. Laura is the only Northland woman to have proposed to a man.
Throughout this entire series, Magni has without a doubt been my favorite character. His complex personality has made him both a hero and villain in my eyes and yet there is no way not to root for these to and their happily ever after. Elin Peer has taken not only this series but interwoven the characters with such finesse it’s almost like reading a family diary with each persons story. The more you read, the more enthralled you become. Another 5 star rating without a doubt.
Elin Peer has this incredible gift of creating characters, situations even whole worlds that allow you to totally escape your own world for a time. I haven’t found many authors who have been able to accomplish that and consider myself lucky to have stumbled across her and her books. This story is no different. I awaited anxiously for this book – book 5 in the series. Magni, the hero of this story, always fascinated me with the glimpses we saw of him in previous books. I have not been disappointed. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Magni and Laura (the heroine) and will love to see more glimpses of them in the rest of the series. I had a hard time finishing this book, only because I didn’t want Magni’s and Laura’s story to end. But all good things must eventually come to an end. So now I wait patiently (or maybe not to patiently) for the next book in the series to arrive
Laura,
You went away to find yourself…
And you found a confidence and surety and strength you didn’t know you had.
Can you return to Magni without losing yourself again?
You love him.
You hate him. He makes you crazy!
He is seldom gentle…
He doesn’t negotiate. He mandates.
He is proud and strong and… Beautiful.
And terrible.
He is Magni, Man of the North.
Love is a merciless two-edged sword.
It is also light, and life, and laughter…
There is a place of peace and compromise that even the fiercest of lovers must find…
Can you and Magni find it, together ?
This is book 5 in the Men of the North series, and I’ve been waiting for Magni’s story. I could not imagine how the author would pull it off. He seemed impossible.
Have mercy! Talk about the battle of the sexes!
My heart wept. I laughed out loud. I put the book down, yelled, and went to make dinner!
Bottom line: If you haven’t read these books– well, treat yourself! I think maybe this is the best one yet in this series. 5 stars.
This book is absolutely amazing, and so is the author! Every man of Men Of The North has grown so much since the very first book heck I couldn’t stand any of them in the beginning all I wanted to do was knock their teeth out and bang their heads up against a brick wall when it came to their views of women and where a women’s place was. But they’ve all changed so much since that first book.
Magni and Laura’s story was definitely a emotional roller coaster ride. They both had a power struggle going on and it took awhile before they found a common ground on which they both could stand on. Magni finally showed a more vulnerable side and Laura finally showed more of a steel backbone.
At the end of that power struggle they both finally figured out what they wanted and needed, because by then they both finally figured out what was really more important to them and that was each other. And that’s all I’m going to say about this book.
This story will give you so many emotions and a rush of adrenaline that you’ll be wanting more by the time you get to the end. So yes I most certainly am recommending this book to anyone who’s interested in taking a walk on a tightrope without a harness or a safety net below to catch them if they fall.
FINALLY! Magni and Laura’s story, and it was SO worth the wait. I loved how independent and self-assured Laura was when she returned from her 6 month stay in the Motherlands. She didn’t take any crap off of Magni, and she made him work hard to win her back. I also loved seeing Magni grow and evolve into a more compassionate, flexible and understanding husband and man, in general.
One thing I really admire about the story lines in this series is how inclusive Peer has made this futuristic society. Race has totally ceased to be an issue. Nearly everyone is of a mixed heritage, and that is accepted as the norm and appreciated as a beautiful trait. The only division seems to originate with regard to which side of the wall you live on — the Motherlands or the Northlands — an age old contest of wills between men and women that will probably endure the length of humanity.
What a wonderful thing it would be, if our current society could adopt the mindset of Peer’s imagined society and just love and accept people for who they are not what they look like.
In this series, each book tops the one before, I am SO ready for the next one!
*I received a complimentary ARC of this story in order to read and provide a voluntary, unbiased and honest review, should I choose to do so.
In every book series there is a character who’s story you are desperate for. Since first meeting Magni in The Protector, I have been eager for his book but also worried that it wouldn’t live up to my expectations. Pah – how foolish of me to have worried so needlessly. If I hadn’t literally fallen asleep whilst reading this, I would have read it in one sitting.
I laughed, I cried and I fell totally and utterly in love, again, with the complex and wonderful man that is Magni Aurelius. Small wonder Laura found him so hard to resist, even when he was being a pig-headed fool there is still something special about him. We find some amazing things out about Magni in this book, some of them will break your heart. They all work to build a picture of the amazing man underneath the hard, gruff and controlling shell.
Laura is simply amazing, and in many ways she is the character most similar to a woman of our time. I loved that she realised she had made mistakes too and that changes were needed from both her and Magni if they were ever to find the HEA.
As with all the books in this series, there are two stories running at the same time. Along side Laura and Magni’s story of discovering their love is the ongoing story of integration between the Northlands and Motherlands. Although you could read this as a stand alone, it would work so much better if you have read at least The Protector and better still all four previous books.
Every single book is extremely well written, thought provoking and has made me both laugh and cry. The stories within them are powerful, captivating and lasting. I can’t wait to read the next book, The Genius, to see both what the future holds for Shelley and for the Nmen and Motlanders too.
PS – almost forgot to mention that writing talent obviously runs in this family. There are two amazing poems quoted in the book, that were written by the author’s daughter. Well done, you make an awesome writing pair!
This is absolutely one of the best stories of the series, they just seem to keep getting better. Magni is at his wits in wanting his wife back it has been 6 months now some of the Nmen have been sent over to the Motherland for the past week and his best friend Finn was part of the group that went over and he was staying with the Priestess that Magni had kidnapped and was put under Finn’s protection. Finn promised that he would try to find Laura and try to convince her to come home. Finn fell in love with Athena while he was visiting and brought her back with him because she got hurt during the earthquake .Magni was happy to see Laura but didn’t know how to express himself except by demanding that she listen to him. Laura talked with Athena and realized a lot about herself as well as her husband growing up in the Northland she saw how different her life was to the way she had been living in the Motherland and she liked the freedom she had but she loved her husband but he always wanted her to do as he told her without question and she was determine to prove herself to him but she didn’t realize that she didn’t know how her husband thought because they didn’t talk and realizing that she made even more mistakes that caused them both distress. Now it seems like they may never get back to gather because Magni finds out she is not one of them anymore in his mind she has betrayed him so he leaves for Alaska and all hell seems to break loose. I received a copy of this book as a gift from the author. I am providing an honest review without obligation
I received an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
Ahhhhhh……the long awaited story of Magni and Laura! I was so worried how this one would turn out since it’s been building since the first Men of the North book and was the catalyst for what happens in the four books before this one. I should of known that Peer would deliver. Did she ever deliver! I laughed, cried, got pissed, and said a few “wtf’s” (sorry Motherlanders!). Poor Magni was under appreciated from all sides. How he held it together for so long I habe no clue. He also threw the worst tantrums and was completely resistant to change. Laura was entitled but wanted to be shown just even the tiniest bit of respect from Magni. Neither would communicate their desires properly so nothing ever changed.
Peer scared the crap outta me in a few parts of this book. I won’t spoil it, but I will say the death I thought there was going to be had me tearing up in anticipation while reading!
I love the conflicts in these books, culturally, morally, men vs women, all of it. I love seeing how they each deal with situations and hurdles along the way to change. Wonderful wonderful addition to the Men of the North and I’m so happy Magni and Laura finally got their HEA!
Magni, Magni, Magni!!!! The ultimate book boyfriend. He’s perfect. What I wouldn’t give to find me a Magni. I’m in love people….*sigh*
This was the book I’ve been dying to read since I read The Protector. Reading how Magni was-not- handling Laura’s departure in the books 2, 3 and 4 was breaking my heart. And then here it was….. The Warrior sitting on my kindle (courtesy of ms. Elin Peer) had me giggling like a school girl and I knew it was about time I get some answers.
The history of the main characters:
In the previous books we find out that they are married but Laura is not happy. Magni is too possessive and domineering in all the aspects of their marriage and drives her nuts. So when she gets the chance, she leaves him to visit the Motherlands to see how they live. Women there have more freedom and they can learn martial art (Laura’s dream), work and fend for themselves and go anywhere they like. Magni doesn’t get the news very well and he enters a downward spiral of depression and alcohol. He is constantly angry and looking for fights. In his eyes love equals loyalty and Laura just betrayed him in the most brutal way. Let alone thateverybody is laughing at him because he couldn’t keep his woman. He is the second in command, brother of the Ruler, the captain of the army and his wife managed to ridicule him. His pride took a massive blow that it will be hard to rebuild without him going the extra mile of being cruel and cold hearted.
Little bit about the book:
Laura comes back from Motherland with a plan in mind. She will talk with Magni to end their differences and make him admit his feelings for her (if he has any). She will get his respect and make him realize that they are equal. She will stop bowing to him and go against him if she has to so he can see reason.
Laura is back but nothing is changed in Magni’s book. She is still his wife. She still belongs in his house and in his bed. He just have to be more protective of her so she won’t leave again and make her stop wanting to discuss about their feelings. True men don’t talk about emotions and don’t show any weaknesses by admitting love and care. Plus, he can’t go soft like the rest of his friends that started giving their wives power by listening to their ideas and taking their suggestions and advice into consideration. Someting like this will never happen.
This marriage is destined to fail if nothing changes. So what’s gonna happen? Who’s gonna give in? On one hand, you have Laura. She used to be innocent and sweet Laura but now she is changed. She knows who she is and what she wants, and this is Magni’s respect and love. She won’t back down and let Magni walk all over her. Although she never told him, she loves him, but if push comes to shove she’s determined to leave him again. On the other hand, you have Magni. Broody and ready-to-snap Magni. He feels lonely and abandoned by everyone. He hates change and doens’t give in. The only thing he can rely on is his pride and the loyalty of his people, and that’s where Laura failed him. She hit him in the 2 most precious things to him and he is lost now. She betrayed him so many times that made him wonder if she ever had feelings for him or if it’s better to just let go.
Both are stubborn and think they are right.
Both won’t back down and compromise.
Is there a middle ground they can both stand on and find happiness?
Read it to find out
My thoughts about the book:
This book is different than the other ones. Both of the characters are from Northland so their differences are more personal than political. I didn’t know how Elin Peer will handle Magni and I have to admit I was a bit scared to open the book. He was my favourite character out of everyone and I have a crush on him so I built him so high in my mind, I thought my expectations were a bit too much. But then….. Elin Peers delivers. This guy is everything I hoped for. This mountain of a man falls but falls with grace. Laura is everything he needs and deserves. She is strong and self confident. She stands by him and she’s been in love with him since forever. She knows she made mistakes and she is not afraid to point them out and apologize for them. These two are a match made in heaven.
Note 1: Love the cover. I love the fact that both of them are on it. The amount of times I zoomed in to check Magni out is embarrassing but what can I say? I’m in love
Note2: Love the title. The more I read the more I was wondering whom it was referring to. I think both Magni and Laura deserve it.
Note 3: Love the epilogue. We had a HFN endings in the previous books because of the background stories that continue to play along each book. Since The Warrior is the last one from the first company of men (the main characters of the rest of the books of the series are teenagers in these ones) there is an amazing epilogue. A fantastic one. A brilliant one. I got my ending people and it’s all I dreamed of.
Can’t wait for the Genious. Shelly is very intriguing and it will be real fun to see Marco fall after they way he was treating her. I literally giggle right now just by thinking these two.
Magni Magni oh my poor Magni. He is the persona of Alpha Male. He protects and loves with all his heart and actions, it’s the words he has problems with. Born and bred to be the meanest, baddest and best he hasn’t been taught to deal with his emotions. He protects and provides what more is there. I felt so bad for Magni. I mean no he isn’t my idea of the perfect man but that’s what he was for Laura. She wanted to no needed to hear the words, to know that she was more than a submissive good wife. When everything he knows is changing he takes one last desperate measure to hold to everything he holds dear.
My heart broke for Magni as he goes thru the struggle of all of the changes. Everything is changing in a world that has always been always the strong survive, for the Nmen. This author brings us a dystopian story that is unique and wonderful and mind blowing as we see the differences between the two nations changing, decreasing, and altering their paths in life. There are those that don’t want change on both sides but it’s time. Two opposing nations. Two opposing beliefs. All becoming one. It’s epic.
