From the New York Times bestselling author of My Paris Kitchen and L’Appart, a deliciously funny, offbeat, and irreverent look at the city of lights, cheese, chocolate, and other confections.Like so many others, David Lebovitz dreamed about living in Paris ever since he first visited the city and after a nearly two-decade career as a pastry chef and cookbook author, he finally moved to Paris to … cookbook author, he finally moved to Paris to start a new life. Having crammed all his worldly belongings into three suitcases, he arrived, hopes high, at his new apartment in the lively Bastille neighborhood. But he soon discovered it’s a different world en France.
From learning the ironclad rules of social conduct to the mysteries of men’s footwear, from shopkeepers who work so hard not to sell you anything to the etiquette of working the right way around the cheese plate, here is David’s story of how he came to fall in love with—and even understand—this glorious, yet sometimes maddening, city.
When did he realize he had morphed into un vrai parisien? It might have been when he found himself considering a purchase of men’s dress socks with cartoon characters on them. Or perhaps the time he went to a bank with 135 euros in hand to make a 134-euro payment, was told the bank had no change that day, and thought it was completely normal. Or when he found himself dressing up to take out the garbage because he had come to accept that in Paris appearances and image mean everything.

In my preparations to go to France, I found The Sweet Life in Paris. I really enjoyed the vingettes that were put together in this book. I learned a lot about Parisian and French culture from reading this book and that was exactly what I had been hoping for. I was happy to learn from the author and found several fascinating cultural differences …
I am currently a U.S. citizen expatriot living in Mexico. I enjoyed the similarities. I love to bake, and have spent an unbelievable amount of time looking for ingredients. Like David, every time someone from the States comes to visit, we have a food list for them to bring, and yes, onion soup mix is on my list as well.
He is an inspiration, I …
So wonderful I ended up buying it for Christmas gifts, and his recipes are a joy. Perfect for chocolate lovers, too! He really does clue us in to what it takes to survive well in Gy Paree!!!
A pastry chef moves to Paris and creates a blog. Lots of funny little Parisian anecdotes: how rude they can sometimes be, the greves, car horns, and bad coffee. But offset by the outdoor markets, baguettes, and chocolate. I was jealous. Lots of recipes too, but haven’t tried them yet.
Good Paris memoir. If you liked his first book, you’ll probably like this one as well.
Food+Paris+Good writing = Terrific!
I am an American, just returned from living 2 years in Paris–if you want to know what is is REALLY like to live in Paris, READ DAVID’S BOOK! It is spot-on for what the French lifestyle is really like!! And i continue to reference this, this is an exceptional read!
I have long been a fan of David Lebovitz’s insightful, funny, and self-deprecating writing, not to mention his succulent recipes. His amusement and exasperation at life with his French partner is always an extra bonus and makes me feel like we are friends having a hilarious chat, comparing notes.
For anyone who love food and has ever dreamed of living in Paris.
You can’t go wrong with David’s books…all his recipes work…he’s very detailed oriented and honest……everything is delicious……you can’t go wrong. Fab. I agree with every word…David writes an excellent book, and I’ve never had a failure……quite a feat….he takes no short cuts and his recipes are wonderful…..
I would like to have seen more pictures, but he sure does draw a picture with all his experiences, I think that what made it more enjoyable is that I have visited some of this places he speaks of. I was much younger and now I can look back and understand why I though I was being inspected and when I was actually being treated so politely. I love …
He makes the unpleasant almost sound enjoyable.
I am NO LONGER sure I want to go to Paris.
Wonderful, insightful observations and Great Recipes very appetizing
Loved the recipes this chef shared in his book.

Love love this book, very well written , makes me want to go and live in Paris.
David L shares recipes and insight in this witty, map of everyday Parisian life.
Can’t wait to revisit with my newly acquired knowledge!
I would recommend this book to anyone, but especially anyone who likes cooking, international experiences, and something new.
Tedious, long-winded anecdotes interspersed with some appealing recipes.
Enjoyed very much. Recipes I plan to try. Places in Paris I want to go.
