NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “A briskly paced, terrifically suspenseful work that steadily builds toward a tense and terrifying climax.”—People (Page-turner of the week)This ebook edition contains a special preview of Tess Gerritsen’s I Know a Secret. He slips into homes at night and walks silently into bedrooms where women lie sleeping, about to awaken to a living nightmare. The precision of his … about to awaken to a living nightmare. The precision of his methods suggests that he is a deranged man of medicine, prompting the Boston newspapers to dub him “The Surgeon.” Led by Detectives Thomas Moore and Jane Rizzoli, the cops must consult the victim of a nearly identical crime: Two years ago, Dr. Catherine Cordell fought back and filled an attacker before he could complete his assault. Now this new killer is re-creating, with chilling accuracy, the details of Cordell’s ordeal. With every new murder he seems to be taunting her, cutting ever closer, from her hospital to her home. And neither Moore nor Rizzoli can protect Cordell from a ruthless hunter who somehow understands—and savors—the secret fears of every woman he kills.

Prepare to be scared to turn out the light. The “Surgeon” sneaks into homes where women lie sleeping at night. They are unprepared for the living nightmare to which they are about to wake. He brutalizes women while forcing their husbands to watch.
Two years prior a victim fought back and survived. The new killer is recreating that crime with chilling accuracy and detail. Detectives Rizzoli and Moore must solve the mystery before the Surgeon strikes again.
Be sure to read “The Apprentice” after you finish “The Surgeon”. Tess Gerritsen continues to haunt my dreams with the stories she told in both of the books.
I’m not a great one for blood and gore. Not for nothing is my detective a cleaner. solving murders that are generally blood-free. But I do like Tess Gerritsen’s Rizzoli and Isles series. Gerritsen has a medical background so her descriptions of ‘innards’ while graphic are pertinent to the story.
I like her testy, even furious detective Jane Rizzoli with her unexpected flashes of compassion and reflection Rizzoli copes with being a woman in a male-orientated police department and the only girl in a family of pampered sons. These days she’d be tweeting on #metoo if she used social media (unlikely).
The Surgeon is the first book in Tess Gerritsen’s Rizzoli and Isles series. I’ll definitely be back for more. I loved it. If you’re looking for a romance sort of mystery – keep looking. The Surgeon is bloody and violent. Set in Boston, even the city seems to develop a personality. Without giving anything away, the crime investigated is the vicious, sadistic murder of a woman that appears to be a copycat of a murder a year before. Frome there Gerritsen weaves a marvelous tale of murder and intrigue. Leave the lights on when you read this.
Incredibly suspenseful!
Plenty going on to keep the pages turning. A great whodunit – you won’t know who until the end. I loved the TV show and of course, as always, the books are better.
It was a good read, but could have been better, which is my fault not the authors. Gerritsen is very talented with her words and I should have read the books first instead of watching the series. I was spoiled and had preconceived pictures in my head. Even the blurb/preview at the end with Maura and her mother, turned me off. I’m afraid I won’t be able to read the rest of the series. Again, my loss.
However, I will read other books from this author if they are available.
I knew from the synopsis that this would be a gory book, but I did not expect how gruesome it would be. Rape, mutilation, sexism (going both ways), and unlikable characters made this challenging to finish.

Great read. Edge of my seat thriller
Loved the TV series, but the books were a little too dark for me.
This book was too grisly for me. I could not finish it . I loved the characters in the TV show which is why I wanted to start reading the books. Based I this one I no longer am interested in reading the rest of the books in this series.
There’s a serial killer on the loose, he stalks a charismatic female doctor in this thoroughly satisfying read!
I enjoyed this book but sometimes it was a bit too graphic.
Great book, I have read all the rizzoli and isle’s book all are very good. Hard to put down.
Creepy, scary, suspenseful and a nail biter. Read with the lights on, if you like a frightening theilker you’ll enjoy this book.
This is a wonderful book and a great start to an excellent series.
Rissoli and Isles make a great team!
I absolutely loved the Rissoli and Isles brooks. I bought them all in hard back and then have passed them on to my niece who is racing through them. All of her books are so good and they follow without recapping throughout. I truly loved them all.
Love the characters
I love a good murder mystery but this one kept me awake. When I finished, I actually slept with the light on.It was unpredictable and thrilling. I know that this book was also a tv show but the book series is significantly better. I love the whole series.
i usually love these characters, but having a very hard time with this book. Been skipping more pages than reading. A little too gruesome for my taste.
