This is the way the world ends: with a nanosecond of computer error in a Defense Department laboratory and a million casual contacts that form the links in a chain letter of death. And here is the bleak new world of the day after: a world stripped of its institutions and emptied of 99 percent of its people. A world in which a handful of panicky survivors choose sides — or are chosen. A world in … world in which good rides on the frail shoulders of the 108-year-old Mother Abigail — and the worst nightmares of evil are embodied in a man with a lethal smile and unspeakable powers: Randall Flagg, the dark man.
In 1978 Stephen King published The Stand, the novel that is now considered to be one of his finest works. But as it was first published, The Stand was incomplete, since more than 150,000 words had been cut from the original manuscript.
Now Stephen King’s apocalyptic vision of a world blasted by plague and embroiled in an elemental struggle between good and evil has been restored to its entirety. The Stand : The Complete And Uncut Edition includes more than five hundred pages of material previously deleted, along with new material that King added as he reworked the manuscript for a new generation. It gives us new characters and endows familiar ones with new depths. It has a new beginning and a new ending. What emerges is a gripping work with the scope and moral comlexity of a true epic.
For hundreds of thousands of fans who read The Stand in its original version and wanted more, this new edition is Stephen King’s gift. And those who are reading The Stand for the first time will discover a triumphant and eerily plausible work of the imagination that takes on the issues that will determine our survival.
From the Hardcover edition.

It’s written by Stephen King. What more can I say… this is a lengthy tome that delivers everything you’d expect from Mr. King.
Great!
Easily my favorite book of all time from the King himself. The Stand has also become unnervingly relevant in our modern age – quite a feat for a book written in the 70s!
This enormous novel pits a rag-tag group of “good” against a properly menacing evil. The memorable characters stay with the reader long after the final, inevitable battle.
The book “The Stand” by S. King is an excellently written book. (I read both the extended copy and the regular copy of this book.) This was my first time reading any of Stephen King’s books. I was hooked with his style of writing immediately. (I then found that I “had” to read all his books.)
I compare all other books to this story.
The story had me reading all day and far into the night, from the first page. Such a multi-detailed list of characters had me feeling as if I knew the characters personally. The story was well developed and consistent throughout the book.
(Note to new readers of this book: do not read when sick with the flu, or when you have a cold.)
One of King’s best books, a dystopian future destroyed by a biological weapon that accidentally is loosed on society with a 99.4% terminal rate. The survivors find themselves in a destroyed world, and as they make their way, find they are haunted by dreams of an old woman who beckons them and appears friendly and another, a man called The Walking Man or Walking Dude, and might be dangerous. As the survivors make their way, they find themselves having to pick a side and sooner or later must make a stand for survival and the future of the human race.
More frightening than his traditional horror fiction.
This book was so epic, I’m not even sure how to review it! So many different characters, so many different themes, with that overarching good versus evil I love in a story. The Stand was everything I expected from SK and more.
I read the uncut version, and it was definitely hefty, but worth the time investment. I’m so glad I finally picked it up! The Stand ranks right up there with 11/22/63 for me and is now one of my fav SK books.
One of my favorite SK novels, a big fat chunk of greatness!
I found a paper back copy of this book in my AIT barracks in Fort Bliss, Texas. Loved the book! It was definitely a needed escape from the ever present drill sergeants in my present day life.
It’s one of the best books in the world!!!!!!!!!
This is one of my ALL-TIME favorite books. In a world where 90 percent of the population has been wiped out, the drama of Good versus Evil is played out and we are given the perspectives of both sides.
Great, memorable characters, and though it is probably one of King’s longest books, I return to it time and time again.
I LOVED this book. I’ve read the unabridged version at least 10 times.
I know, you’ve already read it.But if you haven’t, it’s life-changing. King is n astonishing story-teller.I know, you know that. But this is a masterpiece–prescient, and thought-provoking, and riveting.
This is a long book but it never gets dull. It has everything you need. Great characters, good vs. evil an epic journey and an apocalypse. What more could you ask for? I find Stephen King’s books to be hit or miss. This was a bullseye.
One of my favorites of all time.
It made me think of just how possible an event like this could come true in this day & age. How would the people of today would survive through something of this caliber. Not likely.
The best book Stephen King has ever written to me.
I love Stephen King books, and this is my favorite of his
The best educational read I have ever consumed. The authors produce factual and detailed revelations of how the narrative of slavery in American history was developed.
This novel explains the author’s discovery of how the cradle of America’s slave imports to the city Charleston South Carolina has a warped and unrecognizable perception of slavery.
They present the origins of slavery and its impact beginning with Denmark Vessy’s attempted slave uprising which had fueled the perceptions and fears of African-Americans allowing a country of immigrants to turn a blind eye as African_ American Citizens were never considered since before America was formed.
“Throughout the existence of humanity, the dominant cultures write the history to their advantage applauding their victorious battles to honor their dead with speeches of gallantry.”
The American Civil War’s Confederate Army lost a war yet its supporters to this day revere its losing Generals with state holidays in Virginia, Alabama, and Mississippi, while never admitting, describing, or acknowledging Slavery as one of the pillars for the war.
The authors repeatedly identify’s the US Government’s lack of and failure to assist and support the fundamental human rights for African-Americans which reveals our current racial problems.
This novel amazingly explains why and how the incredible Gulf of perception and understanding between White American’s and African-Americans about race in America has developed under the guise of education.
Please complete this novel, to develop a better understanding of race in America and pass it on to as many people as possible.
I have read this book several times and each time is like the first! Love this book!!
