The first volume in the reader-acclaimed, Amazon bestselling She-King series, a saga of ancient Egypt’s most fascinating royal family.
Is Ahmose’s divine gift a blessing or a curse?
The second daughter of the Pharaoh, Ahmose has always dreamed of a quiet life as a priestess, serving Egypt’s gods, ministering to the people of the Two Lands. But when the Pharaoh dies without an heir, she is … heir, she is given instead as Great Royal Wife to the new king – a soldier of common birth. For Ahmose is god-chosen, gifted with the ability to read dreams, and it is her connection to the gods which ensures the new Pharaoh his right to rule.
Ahmose’s elder sister Mutnofret has been raised to expect the privileged station of Great Royal Wife; her rage at being displaced cannot be soothed. As Ahmose fights the currents of Egypt’s politics and Mutnofret’s vengeful anger, her youth and inexperience carry her beyond her depth and into the realm of sacrilege.
To right her wrongs and save Egypt from the gods’ wrath, Ahmose must face her most visceral fear: bearing an heir. But the gods of Egypt are exacting, and even her sacrifice may not be enough to restore the Two Lands to safety.

Loved this book!
I think the characters were very well written. I read the sequels as well.
Well written and very interesting. I enjoyed this book very much.
This is a very well-written book with a great plot and well-developed characters. I couldn’t put it down. I enjoyed it very much.
Couldn’t read it on my device, font too tiny.
personally, this book was an absolute gem for me. ive always had a thing for ancient Egypt, and there were just no (good) movies or books that took place there. when i found this book i was delighted. the author really puts you into the time and place beautifully. the characters are well written and believable. the tension was palpable, and the …
Got bored with this quickly, seems it’s going to be a power struggle between sisters. Yawn.
This book delved into a portion of history with which I was unfamiliar. It read like a novel, while giving some historical knowledge. It was fascinating.
Slow story line
I always love books about Ancient Egypt. This was a good read with some mystery, entertaining but not that exciting. A good fictional historical theme with the author doing quite a bit of research which was of good value. I would recommend the book to others interested in this era.
Excellent story telling and character development. I really enjoyed it. Will go on to read the others in the series.
As for me, the subject matter is historically inaccurate and misleading.
The writing style seemed forced and did not have a natural flow.
Didn’t like the beginning..Couldn’t hold my attention, Quit reading it.
I stayed up late to finish it. Loved it.
Reminiscent of “The Red Tent”.
As always, great imagery from Hawkins brings Ancient Egypt to life. Unlike others, she doesn’t force modern thought and sensibility on her characters. Good to have characters from another time act like it!
I never read a book about ancient Egypt and even though it was fictional I’m sure much of the content was historically accurate of the time. The characters were interesting and the customs unlike any I’ve read.
I have not finished this book yet but I have enjoyed every page so far. I have no doubt that the rest of it will be just as good and I am looking forward to the ending!
The author must have done thorough research into early Egyptian life, bringing it alive with excellent characterization. The problems of everyday rule and the influence of their gods was excellent and their life was brought alive. Here and there, it dragged a bit, but not excessively.
Interesting book but romance poorly developed.
