A novel of secrets, memory, family, and forgiveness by the bestselling author of When Never Comes.
Lizzy Moon never wanted Moon Girl Farm. Eight years ago, she left the land that nine generations of gifted healers had tended, determined to distance herself from the whispers about her family’s strange legacy. But when her beloved grandmother Althea dies, Lizzy must … grandmother Althea dies, Lizzy must return and face the tragedy still hanging over the farm’s withered lavender fields: the unsolved murders of two young girls, and the cruel accusations that followed Althea to her grave.
Lizzy wants nothing more than to sell the farm and return to her life in New York, until she discovers a journal Althea left for her—a Book of Remembrances meant to help Lizzy embrace her own special gifts. When she reconnects with Andrew Greyson, one of the few in town who believed in Althea’s innocence, she resolves to clear her grandmother’s name.
But to do so, she’ll have to decide if she can accept her legacy and whether to follow in the footsteps of all the Moon women who came before her.

I am embarrassed to admit this, but The Last of the Moon Girls is the very first Barbara Davis book that I’ve read. I know, I know…I’m late to the party.
Just to absolve myself of this travesty, I hustled myself to her list of books and picked up When Never Comes, and I won’t be happy until I’ve read all of her books.
The Last of the Moon Girls is a story about being different, and about wanting to fit in when maybe you should be ‘oh so proud’ of who and what you are. It’s filled with wonderful characters, some of whom you will love, some who you will totally not love, and some who you will learn to forgive.
This book is filled with tension and suspense and a wonderful character by the name of Andrew, who is so lovely you will wish you had met him first.
I cannot recommend this book strongly enough. Barbara Davis, you’ve just found yourself a new fan.
Lizzy, at 36, is forced to rectify the life she built for herself with the legacy her family has left her, and she alone has to decide which matters more. Barbara Davis’ writing is stunning and I felt for Lizzy through and through.
THE LAST OF THE MOON GIRLS is reminiscent of two of my all time favorites, Sarah Addison Allen’s GARDEN SPELLS and Alice Hoffman’s PRACTICAL MAGIC, because it’s witchy, full of plant magic, and painfully human.
So many thanks to Barbara Davis and Lake Union for the sneak peek!
What a wonderful read! “The Last of the Moon Sisters” has it all—family drama, conflict, small town gossip, murder, romance, and oh yeah, magic! The writing was fabulous, the characters real, and journal entries passed down made me tear up. Every one of them. I’m sorry I’m finished. I wish I could read it all over again with fresh eyes. Highly recommend it!
The Last of the Moon Girls is a beautifully written story about the legacy of the Moon women. I was engrossed in this story from the beginning to end.
Fun Story, Could Have Done Without The Epilogue. This was one of those moving yet fun and quirky stories about a person fleeing their home town as a teen only to be drawn back to it in the face of tragedy. The quirkiness was fun, and the magick was downplayed just enough to arguably keep this out of “paranormal” labels even while being present. (And the honeybee scene… that was cool. Freaky, but cool.) Overall has some similarities to the 2019 book The Scent Keeper by Erica Baurmeister, and that is not a bad thing at all. (This book takes a more paranormal tack, that one takes a more science based tack.) Really the only quibble I have with this book is the epilogue, where things are tied up maybe a bit too tidily for the overall tone of the book. Excellent work with a compelling mystery and fun characters – even if I did get at least part of the mystery solved by about the 36% mark. Though the ultimate unveiling was more of a surprise. Very much recommended.
Book Review:
The Last of the Moon Girls by author, Barbara Davis (ARC)
Expected release~ August 1, 2020
An intriguing, absorbing tale, and one I will not soon forget…
The Last of the Moon Girls is a thought-provoking, beautifully written story that takes you by the hand and leads you on a bittersweet journey. A journey which centers around generations of tradition, beliefs, secrets and accusations. But waiting to be discovered are the heartwarming whispers from afar, ones that were lovingly written with care, as a life map leading to truth, to a full heart, and hopefully onto a full life~ a grandmother’s gift for the one who meant the most to her, her granddaughter, Lizzy (Elzibeth) Moon.
Moon Girl Farm was once a place of healing and magic, with an aura of mystique~ a fascination for some, but to others, a thorn in their small town of Salem Creek. A wounded town that is now about to be turned inside out in a way no one is expecting, or prepared for, as Lizzy returns home.
Author, Barbara Davis has crafted a story of remembrance, resilience, and reconciliation. A story that will touch on every emotion as it blankets you in the sights, sounds, and scents of what was, and what will be…
I thank Ms. Davis for my personal copy off this novel in allowing me to not only provide my honest review, but to enjoy and be entertained by as well.

I’ve read all of Barbara Davis’s books. The audio version of When Never Comes nursed me as I recovered from my broken wrist in 2018. The Last of Moon Girls, Barbara’s latest, is a brilliantly crafted story. Tight writing is Barbara’s jam, and this book does not disappoint. Not only is the story well plotted, but Ms. Davis’s sentences invoke a rich feel of magic in this charmingly witchy story. The author takes us full circle as her characters explore important memes such as tradition, loyalty, and confronting darkness. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I would give it ten stars if I could.
I just finished this gorgeous book and was blown away by the artful use of language and skilled storytelling. Author Barbara Davis uses a fine brush to draw complex, colorful characters, including a fiercely independent protagonist whose greatest obstacle is her own self-limiting beliefs. Steeped in equal parts magical realism and dark mystery, The Last of the Moon Girls is a captivating story that will leave you under its luminous spell long after you turn the last page. Do yourself a favor and pre-order this book.
*Thanks to the publisher and the author for an advance review copy in exchange for my honest review.
Sometimes you can go back home. Lizzie returns to her ancestral home after her Grandma dies. There she finds nothing has really changed in the town. She’s determined to find out the truth to what happened years ago .
This book hooked me from page one, kept me turning the pages late lastnight. It had mystery, magic and romance!
I loved it! Thanks to Netgalley for the early copy
Every once in a while when I need something to read I grab a book from my wife’s nightstand fully expecting to muddle through it. This was not one of those books, a couple of chapters in it grabbed me and from that point forward was compelling at every turn. I’ll call it a magical mystery tour.
This book was a great read. Our book club picked this as a monthly book read and I am so glad we did. Nine generations of women each with their own “special gifts”. Some have embraced it and some not. Lizzy Moon, the protagonist, is summoned home after hearing her grandmother. Althea Moon, has passed away. She returns home with the plan to pack up a few things and out the house up for sale. Once home, the past becomes real again and Lizzy feels the need to clear Althea’s and the Moon family name of a murder committed eight years prior. Rihanna, Lizzy’s mother shows up and Lizzy realizes she has to come to terms with her past but also create her own legacy. The book is a mystery and a romance (but not sappy) at the same time. A little bit of magic but not witchcraft. For me, what I read here was about forgiveness, facing wrongs and letting them go and then moving forward. Definitely would recommend this book!

The Last of the Moon Girls solidified a new fan for Barbara Davis books. I especially loved all the insight to aromas and herbal concoctions and remedies. Mysteries are always an entertaining read, along with haunted pasts and family secrets. What I missed was a little more romance. CjF
I like to like the characters and the Moon girls are everything to like. It’s fascinating to see how some of our choices hugely affect our lives in both good and negative ways. Barbara Davis does an excellent job of reflecting this in her delightful story which is about forgiveness.
The Last of the Moon Girls is part mystery, part self-discovery, with a little romance sprinkled in, rounding out this enchanting read. An undercurrent of the supernatural exists in the modern-day world of Moon Girl Farm, a world still full of judgements and misunderstandings. I thoroughly enjoyed the setting and the characters as they grew to understand the importance of knowing who you are, where you come from, and the healing that comes with forgiveness.
A charming tale that combines a family saga, a murder mystery, and romance with elements of the paranormal.
Mystical powers, mystery, and romance combine for a compelling tale in Barbara Davis’ captivating novel, The Last of the Moon Girls. Chronicling the lives of generations of women in the Moon family, this artfully written book drives home the strength of family bonds, the healing graces of forgiveness and reconciliation, and the power of self-acceptance.
The Wisdom of the Ancestors connects family… generations..
Loved the strong women in this story. I loved the way that the Moon women passed torch with their journals. There was just enough magic. Highly recommend.
A delightful, suspenseful, and heartwarming read. Alice Hoffman fans will love this book.

The Last of the Moon Girls is a beautifully written story of a family of women, each with their special magic. A mystery, a little romance, finding where you truly belong and above all forgiveness.
