The InheritanceA Port Henry NovelRiley Maxwell spends her days working from her New York City apartment, designing websites and copywriting for clients around the world. Most of her exposure to people outside of her home base is her visits to the local Chinese takeout place down the street. Satisfied with her life of solitude, Riley’s summer gets turned upside-down when a wealthy client passes … client passes away, leaving her a beach house in Port Henry, New York, one of the wealthiest shore towns on the East Coast.
When the Great Dane, Scrappy, who—surprise!—she also inherited, gets sick, she takes him to the nearest veterinarian, where she meets Donovan Hunter. A ridiculously good-looking playboy, Donovan immediately gets under Riley’s skin, and she can’t wait to be rid of the house, the dog, and Port Henry. Dr. Hunter, on the other hand, can’t get enough of Riley’s sass and how different she is from the usual summer crowd.
As the summer passes and Dr. Hunter runs out of made-up reasons to get Riley and Scrappy back into the office, he cooks up a new plan to catch her attention, setting a plan in motion to get the girl, and the dog.

The Inheritance (Port Henry series book 1) by Amy Briggs
While I absolutely dislike books that don’t wrap things up in a pretty bow at the end this was a good read but please put in the summary that it’s only Book 1 and continues to the next book, please? That being said I’d still give the story a solid 4 stars.
Riley Maxwell wonders if she could be agoraphobic as she works from home, loves online shopping and favorite restaurants on speed dial. But when Jameson Prescott offers her a contract to write his memoirs and enough money to make his the only book she’ll work on of course she’s going to accept this assignment.
Imagine her shock when he suddenly passes away leaving her every thing including a Great Dane puppy. Now she’ll go to Port Henry to see the mansion and manservant Bernard Dubois who is keeping secrets that she must find out answers for. But when Scrappy (Scooby Doo’s small sidekick) decides to eat a pair of shoes and a tree meeting Dr. Donovan Hunter the town veterinarian. Once you get passed the pair of shoes then scratch your head on the TREE (what size was the tree??) you’ll find a budding romance between Donovan and Riley makes this a interesting read but to find the secret and the ending will have to wait for the next book.
3.5 stars
After reading part of this story in the One Hot Summer anthology I really wanted to read the conclusion of Riley and Donovan’s story. This was a different and intriguing story. I was pleasantly surprised and invested in the characters and story. It was well written and moved along smoothly. But then it was the end and I was disappointed. Since this had already been continued from the novella version I hadn’t realized it would be another continuation. If it weren’t for that I would have given it a higher rating.
A sweet and funny romantic comedy.
Riley is smart, sassy, can not stand most people and independent. She is shocked when she is left an inheritance from a client she had for 18 months even though he was a father figure to her.
When she first meet good looking Donovan, she pegged him good. But is chagrined when she finds out he is a vetenarian. He uses her inherited puppy as an excuse to see her again.
Can he romance her to stay.
What is the secret for the real reason she Inherited?
Love Scrappy.
I have chocolate Lab that was extremely clumsy, ate rocks, tear tissues and toilet paper. But when he gives you the puppy eyes, you melt. He also a big sucks and lays his head on your lap.
When Riley’s mentor of sorts passes and leaves her his entire estate, which includes a beach house, and a big, clumsy, but lovable Great Dane puppy named Scrappy, she’s entirely unsure what to make of the entire situation. So she heads out to Port Henry to take stock of her new life. What she finds just may be the best thing (person) to ever happen to her.
When I read the prequel to The Inheritance in the One Hot Summer Anthology, I knew I had to read the full length novel to come, and I’m glad I got the chance, because I wasn’t disappointed with how it all played out. The only thing that could have made it better is if there hadn’t been a huge cliffhanger (YES, unfortunately, I said there’s a freaking CLIFFHANGER!) and I now have to wait for another installment to find out how Riley reacts to the bombshell Bernard laid on her at the end of The Inheritance.
Riley, Donovan, Scrappy, Bernard, and Toni make for very entertaining reading. I especially loved how Donovan is just this really sweet veterinarian who is flummoxed by the newcomer Riley, and fumbles around trying to get her to stay in Port Henry without actually telling her that’s what he’s doing. And the secondary characters of Toni, Donovan’s assistant and friend, Bernard the butler of sorts who’s like this wise older man with all the answers and love for his now deceased friend and employer…yeah, this is a complete world here, and I’m dying to know what happens next!
THE INHERITANCE (A Port Henry Novel) by Amy Briggs is a contemporary women’s fiction with a mystery subplot. I do not agree with the romantic comedy description.
Riley Maxwell is a reasonably successful freelance writer and copywriter who does it all from her small New York City apartment. Riley prefers work over people. Her world is her writing and she only ventures out into the neighborhood for food.
She is offered the amazing opportunity to write the biography of the wealthy
Jamison Prescott from Port Henry, who requires all of Riley’s time and he pays for the privilege. When she is notified that Jamison has died, she is devastated. They respected each other and were friends. What comes as the ultimate surprise is that Jamison has left everything to Riley in his will. He not only leaves Riley all of his wealth, but also his beach house in ritzy Port Henry and his young Great Dane, Scrappy.
Donovan Hunter has succeeded in moving up the social ladder in Port Henry. He has gone from being the son of the help to the successful veterinarian to the rich and famous in Port Henry. Good looking and single, he especially enjoys the summer crowd and the influx of females looking for a summer fling and nothing more.
When Scrappy gets sick, Riley takes him to Donovan. She is not interested in anyone or anything in Port Henry and cannot wait to leave it behind and return to her apartment in the city, but Donovan suddenly finds he is only interested in the new sassy heir.
Donovan wants Riley to stay and give their relationship a chance at least for the summer. Riley does not know what she wants to do about her all new found inheritance, but there is definitely a mystery involved in why Jamison left everything to her.
This is an O.K. romance read, but I really did not connect with Riley or Donovan. All the elements were there, but I felt like I was just reading about two characters, I did not really fall into the story. The author also left the main characters as boyfriend/girlfriend, not a HEA ending. I did love Scrappy though and he added some funny moments. As I was progressing through the story, I kept waiting to find out about Jamison and his connection to Riley, but you only get a partial answer at the end and then a cliff-hanger on the mystery. I was disappointed because the description had me believing this was a standalone, but it is not. Not what I was hoping for, but others might find it cute and want to continue on for the resolution of the mystery.
Great story
