The wildly popular New York Times bestseller and reading group favorite Aibileen is a black maid in 1962 Jackson, Mississippi, who’s always taken orders quietly, but lately she’s unable to hold her bitterness back. Her friend Minny has never held her tongue but now must somehow keep secrets about her employer that leave her speechless. White socialite Skeeter just graduated college. She’s full of … of ambition, but without a husband, she’s considered a failure. Together, these seemingly different women join together to write a tell-all book about work as a black maid in the South, that could forever alter their destinies and the life of a small town.

Having recently seen the movie Hidden Figures, I felt the urge to pull this one back out for another read since it has a similar feel. Great book! Characters felt very real, and put in believable situations with the tensions of pre-civil rights in the South. Author did a wonderful job of combining multiple plot lines with various characters to …
Excellent book! The characters draw you in and it was a book that leaves you missing the characters when you’re done reading it! One of my favourite books!
I saw the movie first. Generally I prefer to read the book first as usually the movie version ends up being a chopped half to death vague memory of the book it’s based upon.
Not this time. The movie is one of my all-time favorites and this book makes it into my top twenty favorites easily.
It was a joy to read, the characters so real it was as …
I LOVED this book. I mean I LOVED this book. I could not put it down, and when I had to, I was thinking about the characters and could not wait until I had time to read again…if you have seen the movie (which I LOVE too) then you have to read the book…there are things in the book that did not make it to the screen and really helps to give a …
I feel in love with Aibilene the instant I met her in the first pages of the book. “The Help” is the story of Abilene, Minny, and ‘Skeeter’.
Skeeter is the daughter of a family that owns a cotton farm and has just returned from graduating from college. She has goals and aspirations that do not include staying home in Jackson, marrying into a …
This book was fantastic. I like books in dialect because I feel like it adds something to the book. I can’t recommend this book enough. It was very well written. It switched between different POVs but it was done so well. There was no repeating of any scenes by different characters which can be crucial to keep your audience captivated when writing …
The Help is set in the south in the 1960’s told from different points of view; both black and white. It gives you a view into what it was like for these fascinating characters to live in these times. This book isn’t nearly long enough. When I was finished found myself wanting to know what else happened to each of these characters!
I loved this book the first time I read it, but I couldn’t believe how much I had forgotten when I read it again last year. This one is a keeper, always good for a reread.
Although the topic of the story was serious. There were some very funny moments with the characters. A couple of these were a lawn covered with toilets and special chocolate cream pies. I would definitely recommend this book, you won’t be disappointed.
Just re-read this after a few years and thoroughly enjoyed it again! Such a moving story–even better than the movie (which was excellent!). Highly recommend!
The Help is one of those books you just have to read at least once in your life.
The story follows a young woman who wants to write a book from a taboo perspective. The characters are funny, and honest. They are the type of people that you can easily love or hate. The conversations and the stories that are told within the book may be …
I loved it , couldn’t get enough of it. Being from the south I could identify with all of the traditions and ways of housewives regarding their gossip about other women . Particularly the way children were raised in that time period and unfortunately the racism that was rampant in that time period. It just really hit home with me, the good and …
I loved this book and have been meaning to reread it for ages. The first time I read it, I was reading it so fast to see what happened next. Now I’d like to reread it just to savor the story and the writing.
This was the last book I read that I laugh my butt off. Definitely worth reading and I will read it again.
Excellent!
Both entertaining and thought-provoking. An interesting story, with wonderful characters.
I read this book at least 4 years ago, before I began to more consistently use Goodreads… and now I’m going back to ensure I have some level of a review for everything I read. It’s only fair… if the author took the time to write it, and I found a few hours to read it… I should share my views so others can decide if it’s a good book for …
It was a love hate relationship with me and this book I loved the characters and found them believable. The biogatry and soul demeaning acts of some people dear my soul.
I want to say how very sorry that I am if I ever was a perpetrator of such stupid ugly behavior.
Wonderful book! Could not stop reading, had to find out what happened to the main characters!
Good look into the post slavery realities in the South, and characters that brought it all to life.
