The wildly popular New York Times bestseller and reading group favorite Aibileen is a black maid in 1962 Jackson, Mississippi, who’s always taken orders quietly, but lately she’s unable to hold her bitterness back. Her friend Minny has never held her tongue but now must somehow keep secrets about her employer that leave her speechless. White socialite Skeeter just graduated college. She’s full of … of ambition, but without a husband, she’s considered a failure. Together, these seemingly different women join together to write a tell-all book about work as a black maid in the South, that could forever alter their destinies and the life of a small town.

One of my all-time favorite stories. Katherine Stockett knows the south and all its dysfunction. The characters made this novel a true delight.
One of the best books I have ever read!
You is kind
You is Smart
You is Important
This is such a great read, which left me with tears rolling down and this book has my heart and love for a while.
The story revolves around three strong women. Aibileen, colored help who take care of the white babies. Minny, colored help, has sassy mouth and as a result she is not able to keep any job. …
I recently reread The Help and found it just as fresh and tender, painful and hopeful as the first time. So rich!
A great story, about amazing women. Unforgettable.
Powerful.
Loved this book–even saw the movie which I thought would be disappointing after ahving read the novel, but it was almost as good!
I don’t often re-read books as there are so many good books out there to read. This book, however, I will re-read. It was that good!
One of my favorite books EVER! Better than the movie. I’ve read it several times.
Great book depicting realistic live in the south during the 60s and how the characters worked through the issues. Sometimes funny, sometimes sad but always entertaining.
WOW, I absolutely loved this book and am sad that I finished it. It takes place in Mississippi, 1962 and deals with how black maids were treated by their employers and also how a white woman is treated for not joining in the bad behavior. I can’t even begin to imagine treating another human being like these ladies were treated. This is the …
Even though I have seen the movie, the wonderful southern dialect kept me on the edge of my seat reading continuously to get to the next crisis. These women were so brave to write about this aspect of their lives. They put up with so much from their employers.
The Help needs serious help…
I wanted to read this for quite a while. I finally got the chance and I couldn’t even get through the first chapter. Why the author felt the need to use the vernacular she does is beyond me. I’d imagine the story is more than likely wonderful, but having to keep going back to reread a sentence in order to comprehend …
For anyone who had lived in the South during mid century, this book reads pure and true.
I have not read this book yet, but I did see the movie, twice. Now I can’t wait to read the book.
Fantastic book. One of my favorites. I’ve both read it and listened to it. The audio performance is spectacular.
I really enjoyed it and I’ve listened to it in the car on a trip very entertaining.
I enjoy the movie but the book gave more details
Excellent book!
Set in Jackson, Mississippi in 1962, this is a book about race, and about women. About what it’s like to be a young liberal white woman in a society in which racial lines are not to be crossed. Black maids raise the white children but their employers don’t really rate them as people. When 22 year old Skeeter challenges this view she is …
