In the flame of battle, even the innocent get burned… against overwhelming odds. Yet a commander is raised over her, and because of his clumsy leadership, a great disaster results in the massacre of a quarter of the Queen’s army. Then the commander unfairly blames a second disaster on Dyrfinna. The wrong stroke of her sword could undo everything she’s ever worked for, earn her the fury of her friends … and exile to certain death.
But you can’t keep a true warrior down. When things are darkest, a flame rises out of the desolation.

*I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*
From the opening paragraph, I was drawn into this book. It has non-stop action, a unique magic system, incredible characters, and of course, dragons!
Dyrfinna is such a well rounded main character. She is a lover of the glory of battle, and an amazing Commander. She has a snarky side that tends to get her in trouble, and she often times lets fear take over when she shouldn’t. I love when an MC isn’t perfect. Flaws make a character feel human, and I loved reading Dryfinna’s story.
The song-magic was amazing. I haven’t a book using this type of magic, and I was really excited when it was used. It’s so unique, and it was a truly fleshed out magic system, which is so important in making a novel feel real.
I have to talk about the dragons! I love dragons, they are my favorite creature to read about and this novel is full of them. The descriptions of the dragons are so incredible, I could almost feel the heat of their fire and see them soaring through the sky.
I could just go on and on about this book. I’m so hooked on this story, and I definitely need to know what happens next. If you like Vikings and dragons, with some awesome song-magic, this is definitely a book I recommend picking up!
I took to this book like a moth to a flame! I loved every last page. Vikings, dragons, magic, and songs galore. With a cool female character that left you on the edge of your seat. I ask you what more could you ask for, well plenty because there are also some butt kicking fight scenes. For me The Flame of Battle had everything I wanted in a book and so much more. Pauline Creeden has me in the clutches of this book and I’m ready for more. What an amazing story! A complete 5/5 for me!
This book was remarkable! So much action and adventure! I haven’t read a lot of these types of fantasies, but this one was pretty good. I look forward to reading more!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own
I just loved the world building within this book, it is written in such a way that you have the information to know whats happening and what everything looks like without being it being detracting from the story. Dyrfinna is a fighter not just as a warrior but with life itself and she needs to be as at the moment she has attacks coming from every angle. Her farther frustrates me so much as he is oblivious to how amazing Dyrfinna is or how well she handles everything. This book is not just about Dyrfinna and the highs, lows, struggles and wins she gets but also those around her which makes this book even better, I bet you to try and not be as invested in Dyrfinna coming out on top as I was when I read this book.
This book was very fast paced and I loved reading all about the battle, we had a very strong female character and that was Dyrfinna. I love the world building in this story it is so great and vivid and an even better thing. DRAGONS. Mother fucking Dragons! I love me some dragons.
Dyrfinna is a brilliant character strong, a great swordsman and a good commander in the battle. I just missed you know description about her and I wanted to know more about her and I didn’t get that.
There were loads of characters that sometimes it was just hard to keep up with and in the end, I did lose who was who. The one thing I did miss in this book is a pronunciation guide. After reading this whole book I can still barely pronounce majority of the names in this book, so that would have really been helpful. I had to admit other than the battle and why they were fighting I was a little clueless about what was going off.
The ending kept me hooked and I kind of wanted to keep reading find out how’d she would get off the island but through some of the other stuff I just found myself a bit uninterested. It looked really good but it just wasn’t for me!
