An account of the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893 relates the stories of two men who shaped the history of the event–architect Daniel H. Burnham, who coordinated its construction, and serial killer Herman Mudgett.
What a great book! Very well written, could be the first serial killer. Never knew he existed till I read the book.

Interesting history and juxtaposition of characters and ideas. However, it was the least enjoyable of his books that I have read because it seemed to be background heavy and then didn’t describe the denouement in as much detail. It may have been that there were too many characters for one book and not enough for two.

This book was a slow start for me but at about halfway through I could see myself standing in the white city. The authors attention to detail is intense but he puts you there.

This is the most fascinating non-fiction book I’ve read! It was like reading a magnificent historic novel. It was so enjoyable to visit Chicago afterwards. I had gained such a awesome respect for architecture after reading this book and went on as many walking tours as I could, professional and personal.

I really enjoyed this book about the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893. At least one of my grandparents lived in Chicago at the time (he was a child), and I grew up in the area, so I enjoyed the turn-of-the-century ambiance. The book is based on fact, but it’s a page-turner that reads like a novel. Juxtaposing the great architect Burnham and the killer …
