An account of the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893 relates the stories of two men who shaped the history of the event–architect Daniel H. Burnham, who coordinated its construction, and serial killer Herman Mudgett.
Good story about the World’s Fair and a side of the first serial killer. I went on to read more about H. H. Holmes.

Garishly good. Love historical books based on happenings of the time. Great visual conception of the fair in Chicago. Horribly incidents. Horrific atrocities.

Erik Larsen details the twisted life of what is now thought of as America’s first serial killer. But the fascinating part is how he explained how the 1893 world’s fair came about and detailed the construction of all of the pavilions. I’m from the Chicago area and was fascinated to learn how so much of what we now see there came about.

Mr. Larson writes history in an entertaining, informative and suspenseful way that helps the reader remember and associate the facts with our current time. The way history should be written to grab the interest of readers. More for someone interested in the past but not looking for any great truth to emerge. His other books are also well written …

Non-fiction that reads like fiction. I learned lots about the Chicago Worlds Fair as well as the country’s first recorded serial killer. This book is extremely well written and worth the read.
