“A juicy melodrama cast against the sultry, stylish imagery of North Africa in the fifties.” —The New Yorker
The last person Alice Shipley expected to see since arriving in Tangier with her new husband was Lucy Mason. After the accident at Bennington, the two friends—once inseparable roommates—haven’t spoken in over a year. But there Lucy was, trying to make things right and … a year. But there Lucy was, trying to make things right and return to their old rhythms. Perhaps Alice should be happy. She has not adjusted to life in Morocco, too afraid to venture out into the bustling medinas and oppressive heat. Lucy—always fearless and independent—helps Alice emerge from her flat and explore the country.
But soon a familiar feeling starts to overtake Alice—she feels controlled and stifled by Lucy at every turn. Then Alice’s husband, John, goes missing, and Alice starts to question everything around her: her relationship with her enigmatic friend, her decision to ever come to Tangier, and her very own state of mind.
Tangerine is a sharp dagger of a book—a debut so tightly wound, so replete with exotic imagery and charm, so full of precise details and extraordinary craftsmanship, it will leave you absolutely breathless.

Never has the advice not to judge a book by its cover been more appropriate. The best thing about this book was its cover.
Boring, rambling, redundant. One of the worst books I’ve read of 2019 and I read well over 100.
I loved this book. Definitely a stand-out read. Packed with the sort of detail about Morocco that will make this a must read for travellers. A fantastic mystery and characters that will stay with you long after you close the book.
Wordy and slow
Rather depressing.
The book did not “catch ” me. i found the characters sketched and not easy to identify with ,,, too much verbiage without out enough believable characterization. In terms of the denouement..”saw it coming miles away”.
I loved this book and didn’t see anything even close to the ending coming. The two voices of roommates from college blend into one, are they one? Whose parents were tragically killed? I couldn’t stop until all was revealed, or was it?
What a wonderfully atmospheric read. Felt like watching a film noir. Really enjoyed it.
Shades of The Talented Mr. Ridley and The Lake of Dead Languages, set in beguiling Tangiers. This gem stays with you, long after you finIsh.
Loved this book! Can’t wait for the movie!!
It’s a very good psychological thriller.
This book was simple and superficial. I do not believe Joyce Carol Oates gave it the review you attributed to her. Luckily, I checked it out at my local library instead of purchasing.
Disappointing. Promised more than it delivered
Not really sure if I liked this book or was disappointed? I would say a little of both.
Well-written and full of plot twists and turns, this book kept me guessing right to the end and still wondering which character was really the more upright.
Exotic locale and very interesting characters. Well worth a read.
I try to form a firm opinion on this book and find it difficult. The plot flows and sometimes surprising, the characters are partly live but not beyond that, the landscape is familiar but not impressive. So why then did I read the book to its end?
I think that the reason for this lies in the writer’s ability to tell the story in a trifle. Some writers can write an entire book only to bring their readers to an unexpected end (It’s better that it be the end of the book and not of the reader), where the text changes for the better. Only then, where the climax makes the book perfect, in a few pages that are no less than a work of art, the writer compensates the reader for the time of reading a whole book.
The problem with these kinds of books, (which usually cannot keep their reader to the end and even worse,) that if the end of the book is not strong enough, you tend to find it difficult to form a firm opinion.
Oh gee, I’m in a loop.
One of those books that the reader cannot put down. The title is ingriguing because it leaves the reader totally unaware of what is inside. This is an amazing writer whose works I will absolutely read.
Not worth the time or effort trying to figure out who was who!
Found it to be a wonderful gothic noir type of story.
