Matthew Cane succeeded in the first leg of his mission, only to find himself at home in a foreign world. Can he prevent a catastrophe that has plagued him since he was a baby? Will he jump the Storm to complete his mission?
This is the second full length book in the Project Renaissance Man series and finds teenager Matthew Cane travelling back in time from 2037, but not quite to the time he expected. For some reason, he has turned up to 2021, some nine months after the Storm hit and seven billion people were killed! He and his friends in 2037 sacrificed nearly everything, to escape his father Eric’s clutches, in an effort to stop his plans for the future of civilization in their timeline. What he didn’t expect, was the massive drain on his health on his arrival, leaving him bedridden for almost ten days! He finds that someone from the past stepped into the vortex, to allow him to take over his identity whilst in the past. Since there is a limited number of people in the community after the storm, he would have been too obvious as a new addition.
He has to take on a different persona, and attempt to defeat his father, whilst also ensuring he doesn’t change the future timeline, by altering any events that have to happen. He hopes that by being in this timeline and at this time, he can also stop the incident which caused his mother’s death, as well as her lab partners, when Eric becomes suspicious of his new team of 2021. He really needs to travel further back in time, to before the storm, to stop civilization from being decimated, but must first put all of the clues and discs ready got his team of 2037, so they can succeed in getting Matthew sent back in time to put a stop to everything. He is now in a time where Eric, his father, starts to put his Plan 40 into effect, putting the messed up chaos in the streets and beyond, as everyone concentrates on their own pet projects, into a campaign for a change in leadership. A change from a large council full of forty plus RM’s, to one man being in control as an almost self-appointed President of this new world!
Matthew knows this has to happen, but it doesn’t mean that he takes much pleasure in his part in the process. He has a surprise addition to the team, with someone from the future who was trapped in the vortex with him, but ended up in a somewhat different location, when they came out in the past. Eric’s changes to both his and therefore Matthew’s genetics will leave Matthew with a difficult decision, in deciding what his next steps are going to be. Once he takes that next step, the next choices he makes will see him either stuck in the past or in a future which may not have changed like they hoped! Having to see his mother die all over again is one of his deepest fears and he hopes that can be rectified with their latest plan. Another book is still to come in this series, for readers to find out where and when in time, he ends up and whether the impossible can actually be possible. Matthew may only be a teen ad not one of the genius RM’s, but he has a world changing decision to make and the hopes of all his friends and family with him. A tale of time travelling and the conflicts changes to the past can make to the possible future they create. One man wanted to change the world in his image and only Matthew and his cohorts can make the changes to save everyone. The sequel is called Storm Fighters and I can’t wait to read it to see what happens next! I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
