Kidnapped from Africa as a child, Aminata Diallo is enslaved in South Carolina but escapes during the chaos of the Revolutionary War. In Manhattan she becomes a scribe for the British, recording the names of blacks who have served the King and earned their freedom in Nova Scotia. But the hardship and prejudice of the new colony prompt her to follow her heart back to Africa, then on to London, … where she bears witness to the injustices of slavery and its toll on her life and a whole people. It is a story that no listener, and no reader, will ever forget.Published in Canada as The Book of Negroes and the basis for the award-winning BET miniseries of the same name.

Excellent historical account on the slave trade between Africa and South Carolina from the perspective of a young girl. Throughout her life, inequity, inequality, and racism follow her. Gripping and extremely informative.
So well written and about an era I knew little about. Was determined not to like the book because of the slave subject matter. Captured me from the first page and had to make myself put the Kindle down to sleep each night. Wished the hour before bedtime of reading could be longer, especially with a book this historic and gripping.
This is a book that will haunt me forever. It is heart wrenching and enlightening.
Great storyline about little known piece of history.
Beautifully researched and written. It should be required reading to get an inkling of the tragedy that befell many entire populations.
A look back in a way I’ve never read before. I admired and liked the main character. Different from the usual crime and romance novels out.
Sad, but pleasing, because she she had a goal and never gave in to negative situations. ..always found a positive outlook. .
It told about a little-known piece of our country’s Revolutionary War period and the role of slaves and African Americans. A reminder of the drive of the human Spirit to live free.
A different look at our nations history
I learned so much from reading this book. The main character was so brave, strong and persevered no matter what life threw at her. It’s an easy read inspite of being full of information. I loved this book and will recommend it to friends who love to read.
This book was awesome!! It was definitely a page-turner. It was so realistic and very harrowing. It definitely shows the inhumanity of slavery!! I highly recommend!
This book was a wonderful read. I will be reading more of Hill’s books.
Historical fiction that recalls the horror of enslavement as it tells one woman’s story. No one knew slaves’ name. Now we know one and the people who influenced her being!
Great book
It was a book about people overcoming or living with impossible obsticals. Good character depiction.
It will never leave you
The main character was a strong, intelligent woman and the author had me interested from the first page. It brought the plight of the slaves to a personal level and I couldn’t put it down. I LOVED IT!!
This book was an eye opener to what a slaves life could truly have been. And the title, that said it all for me
A fascinating historical novel of a shameful time in our history…when slaves were brought to the Southern parts of this country and sold…like cattle to farm and land owners. This should be read by every American and African American, to understand how the mistreatment of these people brought us to the political unrest of today. Not much has …
When I first read this book I thought it was a true story. Even though it is a work of fiction, it is so convincing that I feel this could be someone’s life. A true eye opener into the autrocities of slavery.
