The old world is buried. A new one has been forged atop the shifting dunes. Here in this land of howling wind and infernal sand, four siblings find themselves scattered and lost. Their father was a sand diver, one of the elite few who could travel deep beneath the desert floor and bring up the relics and scraps that keep their people alive. But their father is gone. And the world he left behind … behind might be next.
Welcome to the world of Sand, the first new novel from New York Times bestselling author Hugh Howey since his publication of the Silo Saga. Unrelated to those works, which looked at a dystopian world under totalitarian rule, Sand is an exploration of lawlessness. Here is a land ignored. Here is a people left to fend for themselves. Adjust your ker and take a last, deep breath before you enter.

This is a story of life staying afloat in a land almost entirely covered with sand. The people have adapted to survive in harsh desert conditions and learned to explore and pillage what lies beneath the ground.
The best part of this story is the unique world Howey creates where people can “scuba” under the sand and explore the buried past. …
Dystopian fantasy doesn’t begin to cover this book – it has a totally original world and survival system defining it and characters, while minimally and tightly drawn, expressing the edge of existence their lives inhabit. Fairly dark and survivalist, but a fascinating world. Some uneven writing in the last quarter of the story, but overall well …
Another great book by Howey.
The world created here is an absolute original. Not even sure how he dreamed this up. It’s never completely revealed how the world became like that, but the very last line in the book gives a hint to maybe why it did.
The individual story lines are woven together so perfectly between characters creating this amazing …
Hugh Howey is always a treat to read! His worlds and premises are unexpected and intriguing.
Have enjoyed reading all of Hugh Howey’s books. Thought provoking!
Great idea. Didn’t love the story.
I couldn’t finish it, too dark. It was a nice idea but really depressing. And does every woman have to become “fallen” in order to survive.
Beautiful writing, but a bit slow at times. I wonder what will happen next. Loved the audiobook narrator.
I love Hugh Howey! He is an excellent storyteller and “Sand” is a really good book. Post-apocalyptic Colorado is covered by sand dunes, a family struggles to survive after their father leaves to find a “better place”. You will be rooting for the survival of this family!
Interesting concept, diving in the sand.
I enjoyed the book, but I think I preferred the Wool series. However, if you’re a fan of SF, then definitely give this a go.
If you’re considering this book because you loved “Wool,” do yourself a favor and skip this one.
Sand is an engaging and intriguing read for about two thirds of the way but then the author forgets about writing a final act. What is supposed to be the grand confrontation between the good guys and the villains makes you second guess if it actually …
Four and a half rusted and sand-blasted stars. Mr. Howey is a talent, I absolutely loved Wool and part of the challenge is the expectations it created. The setting for Wool and now Sand is brutal and post-apocalyptic. Something happened . . . we don’t know what, nuclear war, extreme climate change . . . something happened. And what’s left is …
I was thoroughly impressed with Howey’s ability to immerse me in the world he created, along with his skill of character development through the characters’ voicing in the narrative itself. My one caveat is that it was sprinkled with quite a bit of profanity (which did, however, feel appropriate given the setting), and that there are some gruesome …
Well worth reading as was his other series.
Very original tale that builds an utterly unthought world of the future. Great read.
Interesting….didn’t keep me on the edge of my seat.
This was one those books I read in a day and couldn’t put down! What a creative desert world and inventions to make life sustainable! This book should be a movie. You have all the right elements to make it a believable world in the future.
An intriguing alternate world with some new challenges and solutions. The book took me right into it and kept me there throughout. I cared about the characters and wanted to see how they solved their issues.
I really liked this series altho not science fiction per se; more futuristic. Some of the concluding explanations took awhile to work out, but most were neatly wrapped up. I also appreciate a book that does not rely heavily on sex and bad language/violence. Not that the writing was pristine, rather that it was not gratuitous.
