The enduring mystery of what happened to the first English colony in the New World…
In 1587, a group of would-be colonists set sail from England and later landed on Roanoke Island, now part of North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Their ship returned to England and the settlers were never heard from again. This is the story, based on legendary and historical information, of what might have happened to … happened to them.
Jocelyn White, a newlywed married to Thomas Coleman, is reluctant to leave her home in England for the wild shores of the New World. The journey is fraught with danger, but her dependence on God and God’s providence carry her safely through.

Hunt is such a versatile writer. She’s not necessarily thought of as a historical fiction author, but this series was my introduction to her as a writer and they remain among my favorites.
I love historical fiction and felt like this one was true to history yet embodied a good story relevant in the 21st century.
The characters were well developed; I felt like I was right there with them. The historical background was wonderful, the story of the lost settlers of Roanoke has always intrigued me and this book was well researched. We may never know the actual story of these brave souls, but this book did a wonderful job of portraying them and the struggles …
This book had many realistic plots and made me want to learn more about the period covered in this story. Very interesting read.
Roanoke is a work of historical fiction with a strong Christian theme. The religious aspects are woven into the story in a way that is not preachy and evokes the religiosity of the late 16th century. The pace is very slow, but the author paints a vivid picture of the hardships faced by the colonists.
My main problem, apart from the length, was …
I was intrigued by the title of this book because my husband was stationed on the USS Roanoke during his Naval career. I actually know very little about precolonial and colonial history. This book was fascinating! I so enjoyed the Christian view and was often upset at the harsh preacher and his misunderstanding of God and grace! I hear there’s …
I have read several books by this author and have enjoyed them all. Excellent research
INTERESTING TO READ ABOUT THE HISTORY OR OUR EARLY SETTLERS. BUT VERY SOBERING, TOO.
I will definitely reread this one soon and plan to read everything by this author. I love history and stories about emotion and love and this one delivered it and more. It provided info on the politics of the time, and pointed out that their are good and bad, strong and weak in all groups of people. I highly recommend this read
Take a time travel trip with this adventure. You can’t put this book down
Already kind of knew the story as we have pieced it together by archeological digs and written documents. And even though the people were named in history it was interesting to read as a fleshed out story.
May not be factual, but does follow known history.
This is a book that does not end well. The main characters sorry marriage was dragged out. I kept hoping for some positive outcome but that didn’t happen. Sorry I spent the time. The writing was well done, I am sure the research was well done and realistic. But there just was no happy in it.
I have read many of Angela Hunts book and have loved them all. I didn’t love this. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t hate it either. It was informative and interesting but the main characters were so unlikable and it made it hard to keep reading. I felt that these characters didn’t have the depth I wanted and they were too stuck in their given roles …
Difficulties of attempting early settlement clearly painted.
It was interesting to read a fictional account of what happened to the settlers at Roanoke. The end is plausible, it could have happened.
Well- written historical novel and I can’t wait to read Jamestown.
Historically so interesting!
Angela Hunt is a fabulous author. This book made me want to read more about the history it was based on. Interesting as well as entertaining.
A wonderful what if story based on historical facts and people. The history came to life with heartbreaks, trials, and love.
It was really a waste of time. It irritated me with story line, i kept reading to see if it improved and it didn’t.
