This was a confusing book for me. I struggled in the beginning with the decision of whether to stop reading or to continue. First of all, who wants to get felt up by a stranger standing behind you in an elevator? Not me, that’s for sure. Ivy as it seemed didn’t have any problems with that because he wore expensive Italian designer shoes. WTF? That’s a reason to let a stranger get hot with you? A stranger you didn’t even see yet?!
Yeah, the problems I had with this book started from the beginning. I was also never sure what Ivy even worked or what was going on with this Dr. Jordan, which by the way knew already for years that he wanted Ivy and that he will get her sooner or later but she had never even heard of him or seen him before.
I had some major issues with Jacade and just every other character in this book. Ivy, Uncle Bernie, Victor… I never really understood what was going on and each of their part in this story.
Ivy was adopted by Bernie and I found it strange that she never noticed what he really was up to. I really wanted to like this book but I was kept too much in the dark to connect with this story and its characters.
Jacade is otherworldly because he seemed to do everything, being a doctor, mobster and owner of a club. What else is there? What doesn’t he do? It’s like he can do everything. And his attitude of “Nobody talks to me that way” is just horrible. I really don’t know what Ivy likes in him?! It can’t be just his good looks though can it?
Ivy annoyed me because she was from the beginning on a mess around Jacade. Why? She didn’t even know him and was all over him and did everything he told her to. Can’t she at least be a little more resistant? Ivy was all the time just drooling all over him. It was really annoying.
Ok, I don’t want to talk all bad about this book because to be honest there were a few scenes that I really liked and enjoyed to read and those pages kept me reading. I still would like to read the next book because the ending was a huge cliffhanger. I have to know what happened and when a few things get explained about Ivy and Jacade I believe the next book will be better. This one was just too confusing and did not make any sense to me. Maybe it was on purpose to be so mysterious but it just didn’t work for me. What happened to Ivy those 3 years ago? I feel like everything was planned by someone but why? Jacade always wanted Ivy? I don’t even know why? And they just met or at least Ivy didn’t know Jacade before. Why did Bernie adopt Ivy when she was already 18 years old?? So many questions and I would like to know the answers to each of them!
Ok, where to begin… I won this book in a giveaway and promised to leave a review when I finished it so here goes…
4 stars. Because I am honestly torn between being completely in love with this storyline and completely frustrated over the lack of background and details.
The beginning drew me in and had me panting by for more. The elevator scene was amazeballs!! I thought it was going to be the type of book I didn’t want to put down and couldn’t wait to get back to; but that wasn’t really the case.
Some things I had trouble with:
-All the sex scenes. Now let me explain my contradictory views here: they were incredibly written and I love good sex scenes in a book but I just felt disconnected in a way. Ivy doesn’t even know Jacade and while “omg he’s gorgeous I can’t think straight” oral seems spur of the moment and sexy in the beginning, she continues to develop this all sex no depth relationship with him over the course of a couple of days. He was all dominant orders and she’s willing submissive with no spine.
Which brings me to my next point.
– After her previous relationships… i.e Victor, this controlling, dominant, has her trailed by a bodyguard man is able to just slip right into her life and pants. She grew up on the streets, knows how to boost a car, and doesn’t even question it when someone pulls out a gun, yet, she’s a docile as can be when it comes to Jacade. Where is this back talking confidant woman Jacade keeps referring to when he thinks that Ivy is the only one he will ever let get away with speaking against him?? Because it never really happens.
-Then there’s the supporting characters. Is it sweet, beat cancer Uncle Bernie or mob boss Bernard? And his wife it what? Ok with all of this? Who’s Chowder? Why is he important but not so much that you ever get any info on him? Is Trip Jacade’s nickname? Is Jacade even his real name? Plastic surgeon by day, hitman by night. Have I mentioned I’m confused?
– The scar?? WTH? Jacade said he’s the one who saved Ivy’s life. Ivy said she got the scar from a chest tube being inserted to save her life. Yet, he keeps asking or wanting to ask her about it when shouldn’t he KNOW? Or are there 2 scars and I’m just missing it?
How did Ivy wind up with these people after living on the streets? Why did Bernard tell Viktor to take her in? And now Viktor is on the other side of the territorial line? What is this “war” they all seem to be involved in? Obviously, since this ended on a cliffhanger I can assume most of these questions are to be answered later and left out to keep you in suspense. But, I think it still could have discussed Ivy’s childhood and how she got to her current situation with Uncle Bernie without giving away Uncle Bernie’s motives. Ivy could have also taken more time to get to know Jacade before jumping into being his everything. He may know her, but she knows nothing about him. And she’s aware everyone is keeping secrets. It’s like she has no sense of self-preservation. In addition to her lack of fight or flight, she is apparently irresistible to men. And for a girl who complains about being fat once and having stretch marks, her confidence and men’s reaction to her seem a bit over done.
4 Stars. Simply because like I said I liked the storyline and it was well written and I may read it again, but it has it’s flaws. Just one girl’s opinion.
