The diary of a young Jewish housewife who, together with her husband and five-month-old baby, fled the Warsaw ghetto at the last possible moment and survived the Holocaust hidden on the “Aryan” side of town in the loft of a run-down tinsmith’s shed.
Made me think of how much the Jews suffered from the Reich during the second World War. I was brought to tears when I read what they had suffered. We must be sure this doesn’t happen again.

Everyone should read this book.
Just reading what this family endured was heartbreaking. Evil and greed was abundant, but goodness and mercy prevailed.

I have read a lot of books re the holocaust. This one was a diary and was way too detailed and repetitive. It was sad but realistic. I didn’t finish it.

I found this book to be very hard to read mainly because of the wording, the length (extremely long), and repetitiveness.

I really enjoy this type of book but the way this one was written in stream of thought. Didn’t think I would like that but I ended up really enjoying it. Please read this book!!

Can you imagine ever being so tired from running that sometimes you wish you’d get caught so the ordeal would be over? If you want to feel what it was like to be a Jew in Poland who continues to escape the ovens during WWII, then read this book. There is a lot, I mean really a lot, of detail. However, that detail makes it longer than I wanted it to be.

This story is just so life like, can’t imagine going through what this lady did just to survive from day to day. Everyone should read this story and realize what the Jews had to go through.

Why keep giving the reader the address of every home or building? I finally quit reading it because the addresses mean nothing to me. It got to be too much to continue reading.

An amazing biography of a Holocaust survivor. It was only through God’ s intervention that she and her husband were able to survive. So sad, yet the story needed telling. One of the most descriptive books of actual historic events.

Rescued From the Ashes: Diary of Leokadia Schmidt
A most compelling true story of survival in the Warsaw ghetto during World War II. A young mother and her husband are forced to hide for many months, facing unbelievable hardships, to save themselves and their infant son. I found it impossible not to share their fear as they hid in cramped and freezing spaces for hours on end, fearing their baby would cry and reveal their presence. As he grew more and more active, the parents made a wrenching choice to place him in an orphanage for his own safety.
Nazis used multiple imaginative methods and ploys to accomplish the killing of Jews. They needed permits to work, and those with permits would be rounded up for extermination. And those who were persecuted, like Leokadia Schmidt, were such individuals as would have elevated the world.
The diary presents the day-to-day realities of lives under continual irrational threat, in a manner with more emotional impact than journalism or fiction can present. Please read this book.

Would make for a great book for Secondary students to read to realize the impact of the Holocaust and devastation created upon the Jewish population during WWII.

Actually I stopped reading it about 2/3 of the way through. The writing style was underwhelming and I felt like so much of the book (or diary) was spent whinnying about what people didn’t do for her instead of gratitude for the people who helped her escape. I love reading books in this genre and I’ve read a lot, but I wouldn’t recommend this one.

I knew before reading “Rescued From the Ashes” how painful it would be to read. The pain, agony and horrible treatment and deaths of millions is so hard to think about, much less read about. But how could I not? It was written from the diary of a woman who survived the Holocaust. She and her family went through so many horrors, it is hard to fathom or understand.
The book was well written and with honesty and many tears. I highly recommend it.

We have all heard the atrocities of the Jews during the Holocaust But this takes it deeper. These people were terrorized by their fellow Jews, Polish Police, Polish people that were cooperating with Nazi, people who were trying to exploit them for financial gain and many more.

It’s hard to be critical about such a heart wrenching book. However, this book could have used some more precise editing. Sometimes it felt like a slog despite the subject matter.
