Anyone who knows me, knows I am a Nikki Landis fan. That being said, I was intrigued by the title and description of this book. It’s seemed like something different than what I’m used to reading from her and I was right! Imagine an alternative version of our world. One where we are at war. The heroine, Lizzie, has lost everyone she holds dear in her life and winds up fighting with the Freedom Fighters. She wants justice and revenge! Read the book description and you’ll have a brief synopsis of the storyline. What you won’t have is the emotional impact Nikki Landis delivers as her world-building continues to grow and her characters seemingly take on a life of their own pulling you along with each step they take. There were times my heart was palpitating so hard I felt like I was right there. This was a great read and a spectacular book to begin a series worth following through with.
Nikki Landis creates a post-apocalyptic world that is intensely believable in Refugee Road (Freedom Fighters Book 1). The characters are relatable and real.
Lizzie and Alec met on the day of her sister Lydia’s wedding. She was just 15 but fell in love with him. She marked his heart forever. When the horrible reality of Kill Day struck their lives and separated them, he swore he would find her. Three years later, he does find her as they are fighting on opposite ends of the war; he captures her. As a part of the Refugees, Lizzie’s leader, Darren, has become obsessed with her, and her best friend Malcolm, as well as a couple of other fellow refugees, warn her. She is in danger with no way out until Alec comes to her rescue once again. Their chance at happily ever after is at odds with the reality of the war they are fighting.
With many twists and turns, suspense and action, and romance and unrequited love, Refugee Road takes us on quite a ride. With a cliffhanger ending that was always looming, Nikki Landis writes a tale that will keep you on the edge of your seat and eager to get to the next book.

The cover and the blurb for this book is what attracted me to it. I found the plot to be one that drew me in, there is a cliffhanger at the end of this book so be warned. But, what a story to get to that brilliantly written cliffhanger! I really enjoyed how the author wrote this and as soon as I finished this book, I immediately delved into book 2.

Refugee Road is about a war torn world and finding love in the midst of it all. At first I wasn’t sure I would like this book because I don’t like reading about war but once I got started Lizzie’s story pulled me in. After everything she has gone through she proves just how strong and determined she is. This is a fantastic, well written story with great characters that pulled at my heartstrings. It ends in a cliffhanger and I am anxious to find out what happens next.
This is book one in the Freedom Fighters series. Meet Alec and Lizzie. What an emotional roller coaster of a story. The twists and turns in this story are crazy and are addicting. I could not help but read as much as I could every time I picked it up. This book has a cliffhanger ending and continues in the next book which is not my favorite but this story seems to be worth it so far. I will continue to read to see what happens next. Enjoy!

Refugee Road by Nikki Landis is the first in a series of Freedom Fighters stories….wasn’t entirely sure if this type of story would be something I’d enjoy…but, I needn’t have worried!!!!! Nikki Landis is such a talented writer….she can write about anything and make it a story that I can’t put down!!! This is the story of Lizzie and Alek. They met only once and both of them knew…..but, before they could profess their love, they were ripped apart by war. There are lots of characters in this story that make things particularly exciting, unexpected, and steamy (Mal, Darren, Donnovan)!!! This is just a phenomenally good read!!!! It ends with a cliffhanger…gotta see what happens next!!!!

Love in time of war. The militia bombed her town and almost everyone was killed. Lizzie’s sister died in her arms and Lizzie was severely injured. Weeks later and after recovering she joins the refugees, hatred for the militia her driving force. Does someone in the militia suspect Alec is a double agent? When she and Alec learn about the plans the militia have and what they are secretly doing to the soldiers, they must plan an escape. Too much violence
This book needs to come with warnings. There are really a few things that grate on me here, the first being the amount of domestic violence, which we have absolutely no warning about in the blurb. We are told that Darren is dangerous, but not how dangerous and violent he is. He also isn’t the only one, with another character injuring Lizzie for the fun of it as well. If you have any issues with any of this, best to walk away and stay away.
The next is that, after three years, two people suddenly seem to decide that they’re in love with Lizzie, and want to make their intentions known, just at the point she rediscovers the one she lost, who she fell in love with at 15. It’s damned confusing! Lizzie obviously chooses Alec, as the blurb indicates, but Darren appears to use his sudden increased interest as an excuse to dominate her, and physically punishes her, despite his declared feelings, for insubordination.
Then there’s the timeline. I misread it at first. I assumed that it was all supposed to be taking place around 1945-6, but then Lizzie’s home on the Militia base doesn’t add up to that – domestic appliances that wouldn’t have been available then. So I went back and reread the description: “It was nineteen forty-five, or similar enough.” The Militia movement has been going on since then, when Hitler apparently surrendered and WWIII started. So this war has been fighting for all those decades up until the modern era. The USA is in ruins, with the President firmly in charge of the Militia, who control everything. Except the Refugees. But they try. But this is the thing that gets me most: if they’re stuck in this time warp, how on Earth do they have mobile phones, modern appliances, etc.? They have antibiotics, modern medicines, sonograph. It’s extremely confusing. Yet they still apparently dress like it’s 1945, too.
The romance itself was great, but would have been so much better if it wasn’t for the distractions mentioned above. I was actually shocked by the domestic violence. Now I can cope with it if prewarned, but I don’t expect to be thrown into someone being abused. As I mentioned above, for those triggered by these sorts of scenes, there really needs to be some warnings.
Lizzie settles into domestic life quite easily, despite the fact that she used to train daily, keeping fit to a high level. But, of course, everything is far too easy…
Really, this needed a far more concrete background. All the scenes were descriptive, but those little niggles kept me from enjoying the story completely.
Final rating: – Sort of liked/OK
The blurb on this captured my interest and the story itself captivated me. It’s a time of war between a country but also of the heart for Lizzie. She finds herself trying to decide what is right and discovering secrets. Her and Alec are amazing together amidst the horror around them.

Izzy was fighting the Militia. She was part of the rebels and her whole life was about revenge for the horrible killing of everyone she loved. Fighting was her life now. She gets captured one night when a mission does not go well and her captor showed her mercy. She soon discovered he was Alex, the boy she met before the destruction started on Kill Day. She fell in love with him then and the chemistry and feeling were still there for both of them
This is a post apocalyptic romantic thriller that grabs you and holds your attention until the book ends. This is the first book in the trilogy. The characters are phenomenal, they engage you in their story with their personalities, foibles and all. The emotional stress the characters face is amplified by the horrors of war, not knowing who to trust and constant fear. The storyline flows smoothly, as the author expertly weaves together the elements of action, danger, betrayal, suspense romance and erotic scenes. This serves to provide the reader with an emotional roller coaster of a ride as the characters navigate through their own raw feelings and the extremely dangerous environment they live in. I thought the story was amazingly well written and I look forward to reading more about these characters.
