Everyone will tell you to read this but don’t. It’s well written but it is a terrible story and not even good writing can make up for that. If you want a classic romance story, stick to jane eyre, wuthering Heights, or even scarlet letter.

Pride and Prejudice is probably one of Austen’s most celebrated, popular and enticing literary works ever and also happens to be my personal favourite so far. Great entry level classic and quite accessible. Full of humour and wit, especially the way Austen pokes fun at the societal norms of her own time so subtly. Great female friendships, interesting character studies, strong and compelling protagonist, social commentary and an extremely adorable, slow burn romance that develops throughout the books. Great character arcs as well. This is a fantastic read even for people not huge on romance. The writing and plot are done incredibly well and the characters are deeply engaging. Pick this book up. Trust me.

My favourite Austen novel, and probably my all time favourite novel. I love the way Jane Austen is able to take you deep into her characters, giving you a sense of what it was like to live in her times. With great wit and style, she shows us our human strengths and weaknesses and what it is like to love and be loved.

Well I’ve just finished my annual re-read, there’s a reason I’ve read this book soooo many times. Not just because it’s my favourite book of all time, my ultimate read. No, there’s another reason. One word. Darcy! My ultimate book boyfriend. He’s the one that all future book boyfriends have had to live up to, my first, my last, my everything. The smoulder, the arrogance, the fact that he doesn’t suffer fools gladly and the fact that when you’re in with Darcy, you’re in, he’ll do anything for you. That heart of his, he loves with so much passion. Then we have Elizabeth Bennett, a true heroine, I love her so much, she too doesn’t take fools gladly, no one mess with her, she’s headstrong, loving, and independent to the core, she too loves with all her heart. These two really are a match made in heaven once you get past all the stubbornness and formalities. If I could only ever read one book, this would be it.

It’s been a very long time since I’ve done a cover-to-cover reread of this classic. Mostly I’ll pick it up and flip to my favorite parts. I’m really glad I’ve done a full reread this time though. Things I learned from this reading include, but are not limited to:
1. I do not blame Elizabeth for being taken in by Wickham. Honestly, I probably would’ve been as well, she verified that this dude’s coworkers all liked him, and when Aunt Gardiner came to visit said she remembered her friends from Lambton liking young Wickham as well.
2. Darcy really was an a** in Meriton, ok? Like, I did not realize/forgot that when he said the classic “tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt me line” HE HAD JUST MADE EYECONTACT WITH ELIZABETH. That is straight-up rude even by today’s standards, and we have much lower standards in many respects.
3. God, Lydia annoys me and I actually hate her by the end of this. She learns nothing, experiences no moment of revelation that she might have actually ruined both her and all her sister’s lives. I like to think I’m not violent, but I want to slap her.
Now, this book is a classic for a reason, and I will continue to enjoy it in all media forms I can find it in. Lizzie and Darcy’s story is one of my favorites, and Austen’s commentary on her society are witty barbs that Elizabeth herself can only achieve. Bravo, Ms. Austen.

Just a delight! You can’t beat the plot, the characters, or the language. Is there such a thing as the perfect book?
