Wow – I really loved how easy all of the information presented was to digest. I especially related with Rebekah’s story. I, too, have several diagnosed autoimmune disorders. They have plagued me my whole life – bringing me chronic fatigue and pain.
This book validates my experiences with the medical field. It confirms that the pain and fatigue is not all in my head. Furthermore, it gives me hope that life can be improved. Additionally, I was super impressed with the bonus resources that are available as part of Book 1 and finding the online Facebook support group!
I’m excited to read Book 2 and start the workbook that compliments this book!
Overall, I would hands down recommend this book for anyone who suffers from autoimmune issues.
Different Than Advertised
This is a relatively short book, only around 18K words or so, yet it is divided into three distinct sections. The middle section is a case study of one of the author’s naturopathic clients; I always find case studies interesting in books like this. The first section reads like a wellness-based self-help book, trying to get you on board with the proper mindset, habits, and goals to help facilitate what the author sees as three key components of healing. The final section is labeled as Hiatus Tension, but the section contained much more information than that. There’s more information on gut health (including other valves within the intestines), supplements, flower essences, and Chinese medicine elements. Although this book is called Overcoming Autoimmune, I didn’t feel like that was really the emphasis of it. It seems far more focused on gut health. Now, I’m not opposed to having a healthy alimentary tract—in fact, I know it is crucial on many levels—and much of what the author states about it appears to be healthy and/or relatively benign, but I prefer my nonfiction books to be transparent about what they are about in the title and book description, I don’t feel like this book was. Gut health was mentioned nowhere in the description. Again, that’s not to say that there isn’t good or interesting information in here which could be helpful to some people. I just like books to reflect the promise of the title and description. The author has a link to her website where you can opt in to get the book bonuses, including a nearly hour-long video that shows you how to do some exercises in section three. I did find it somewhat disturbing that she had links to an “event” at a supplement company she recommends. I imagine these would be something she gets a commission on or earns points with for her own purchases, though that is not stated. Just FYI if you opt in for the book bonuses.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
Great book on autoimmune and how to overcome them. I got this mostly to try and see if I could help a family member and I liked how everything is explained and how it goes into detail.
