Cities are bombed out ruins and wilderness is humanity’s new home. The undead roam the earth, and the new world order is about the struggle to survive. Sonny Daniels begins an emotional and physical journey of personal survival and protecting those he loves.
While survival is a constant struggle, Sonny’s most desperate fight is the struggle preserve some semblance of a compassionate soul. Sonny … soul. Sonny and his parents are caught in the zombie outbreak in upstate New York. After the passage of the first year, their base is attacked by bandits and their safety has again been compromised. Fearing for their loved ones, Sonny’s parents send him and his orphaned childhood friends, Ashley and Carrie, to Fort Denver Colorado on a military plane.
When Fort Denver is overrun with zombies, the three are alone in a zombie infested wasteland without the army’s protection, forced to rely upon one another and a handful of equally desperate survivors they encounter along the journey. Sonny is determined to do whatever it takes to protect Ashley and Carrie while finding a safe place to call home, but survival can force you to make dark decisions.

It is summer vacation and almost 10-year-old Sonny is glad that he can sleep in as long as he wants. Dad Jack, mom Rachael, and Sonny went to the movies instead of the pool. On the way back, they see a hospital with tents outside and a large sign saying Quarantine: Infected Area. Weeks later, the military shows up and starts rounding residents up for transport to Fort Drum and so the trek into danger begins. This story is excellent, covering what it could be like if we actually did have a zombie invasion due to an uncontrollable illness. There is plenty of action here and I cannot wait to read book 2. Very highly recommended.

Just by the cover and sinopse i thought this was a book about family, and getting together in the middle of the zombie apocalypse, and it kind of was, what i failled to understand is that the book was suposed to be told by the eyes of a 10 years old child (in the begining of the book, around 12 in the end), named Sonny, ok, its ok, i thought i just was mislead by the cover, but when reading i couldnt stop noticing, and when you do notice, its like when someone tells you that, for instance Sandra in your friends group makes lots of noise when eating, and even if you didnt notice before, you start to notice afterwards and it gets really annoying, Sonny doesnt think, his voice in the book is not like any 10 years old boy…
“Susan had a cute face but a body that clearly said that she’s been around sports her whole life, from her strong legs, fit arms, and her flat stomach – her black hair just reached down to her shoulders.” this was him describing a woman in page 20 in the 3rd chapter…
the way he describe his parents is also too mature for a little boy mom “My mom was slim, well fit and very beautiful with her blonde wavy straight hair and blue eyes”
too much detail that is not for a kid to describe, it could be without the slim and well fit, and talking about the mom in the past tense in the begining of the book doesnt feel right, it should be my mom is, not was…
dad description is even worse, “dad was tall with broad shoulders and had a body that could stop a tank, he looked like a movie star with his handsome face, green eyes, and dark straight blonde hair” and again why the past tense…
after a little while we are introduced to the father of two twin girls named Ashley and Carrie, also blond but without many details just that they are twins and around 11 or 12 years old and that means older than Sonny, but Sonny is way mature than both of them… this was so weird for me… (see its always rubbing me on the wrong way…)
i know that Sonny was supossed to be a mix of Judith and Carl, but the Judith was born on the apocalypse and Carl had many good years with his parents just like Sonny, i dont get why make him so mature, make him a 17 years old instead, because with the way he thinks and speaks it makes a lot more sense….
Aside from my problems with Sonny/Carl ( i always saw him with a dirty cowboy hat, just like carl from walking dead) the story was good, the action i mean, i also think it was a bit too much towards the end, but i wont enter in details for me not to give spoilers…. and Mr Cole, dont forget and make the characters forget other characters, because that is annoying… T_T
I wish I could give more, but this is as far and high i can go… i read a lot of YA books and even children stories, Sonny made me mad because he was even more mature than harry potter, and harry well he didnt have loving parents… i hope the next one gets better
At first i requested this book on netgalley and i was accepted to review it, but the ARC sent to me was damaged and i couldnt open it, so i went to the amazon.com and i bought it, So even thou i am not reviewing the requested ARC is still the same book and i am leaving this review voluntarely.
I did really enjoy this exciting zombie end of the world story! A little different as it is from a boys point of view but still very good! I liked the ideas, plot & characters! I will look for more by this writer!
This is my first time reading this author and he has written a wonderful book. This plot does have zombies but it’s way more than that, it’s about the human survivors and their humanity. A great read.
