How satisfying to discover another suspense-filled, gripping and clever yarn, after downloading another premier book by Inge-Lise Goss to my Kindle. Her amazing stories always start with attention-grabbing hooks, and her latest, No Reprieve, is spot on with the others.
When the Founder of The Institute offers Pellegrin Murr a new position in order to refocus their efforts on the resurgence of rebels, I knew I was in for another delightful, well thought out fantasy, because I’ve met this annoying, supersonic android before in No Freedom. Also delighted to see the return of lovers Paislee and Tate, and other familiar friends fighting on the side of freedom – wondering even as I turned the pages, if the forces of good would triumph over evil doers, machines and droids, or will that information be revealed later?
As a longtime fan of the talented Inge-Lise Goss, her latest science fiction thriller No Reprieve, is as fascinating as its predecessor No Freedom. This suspenseful story topped off with espionage/political elements is another winner, and was a perfect read for a snowy weekend. I applaud writers with the ability to concoct other worlds and make future premises believable. Who, by the way, has ever heard of identification, location, and loyalty chips?
Five golden stars awarded for No Reprieve – the story is cleverly crafted, the prose tight and without flaw, and again, I just love the world building. Cheers, Ms. Goss, for the breathtaking, on the edge-of-your-seat entertainment. Highly recommended!
No Reprieve by Inge-Lise Goss is an awesome high tech, dystopian thriller. The novel is the second book in author Goss’ No Freedom Series, but she gives enough background information in this second book so that it could be read as a stand-alone.
The novel begins with a prologue which sets the scene. Pellegrin Murr, head of the ominous Institute, is giving The Founder a tour of its new building, the old having been destroyed in a rebel attack. Pellegrin describes for The Founder many new safety measures that have been employed, especially in the medical department. The Institute is staffed by androids, many of which have been engineered to look human. Any real humans that work there have had implanted a “loyalty chip” which prevents them from ever betraying the Institute. Thus, with this brief prologue, the reader knows he/she has entered a dystopian world – one ruled by androids and, wherein, the human race is at peril.
In the first chapter, we are introduced to our very human heroine, Paislee Hobson, who once belonged to Pellegrin, but escaped to join the rebels. She is being taken to Portland, Oregon where she will assume the identity of a young woman who works at the Courthouse. Paislee’s initial assignment is to discover which judges are really androids in disguise and which are humans with loyalty chips implanted.
From here on the novel takes off at a blistering pace. Twists and turns abound as Paislee tries to navigate the secretive world of the rebels and the all too pervasive presence of her one-time lover, Pellegrin. The characters are beautifully drawn and the future world author Goss envisions is frightening to say the least.
A real page-turner, No Reprieve does not disappoint. This is an exciting read for fans of science fiction, dystopian literature, or just plain old thrillers. While I have not read the first book in the series, No Reprieve kept me enthralled from the first page to the last. I plan on going back and reading Book I (No Freedom) which I have already purchased and will look anxiously forward to Book III. Highly recommended from this reader, five big shiny stars!
No Reprieve by Inge-Lise Goss is a gripping high-tech thriller of good vs evil, where humans rebel against an android rain of terror. Twists and turns abound in this well-written story that will keep every reader turning pages. With richly-drawn characters, I found it hard to choose a favorite and oddly drawn to the villain at times.
Inge-Lise Goss has a beautiful relationship with the written word and draws you into stories you can’t put down. Though I’m typically not a fan of science fiction, I love this author’s work. She can make any genre explode off the page, and I’m never disappointed. Her dystopian world is just as believable as a murder mystery in New York City.
If you love action-packed mysteries, strong characters, and vivid description, I highly recommend any of this author’s books, and if you’re a sci-fi fan, you can’t go wrong with No Reprieve.
Favorite character: Pellegrin
Favorite passage:
I slipped on my shoes and went to check out the roses since Pellegrin wanted me to see them as soon as they got to here. It was a huge bouquet of red roses. I pulled out the card stuck in them. It read: My dear Paislee, I will always want you by my side. Love, Pellegrin. Gazing at the message, I didn’t think it was that romantic, but for an android, it was a good attempt. I stared at the word “Love.” Could his mechanical brain even comprehend what that meant? I did sense Pellegrin was, for some unknown reason, drawn to me, but love? That, I doubted.
No Reprieve is an exciting A.I. thriller full of plot twists to leave you on the edge of your seat and turning the page.
Paislee Hobson is part of a rebellion fighting against The Institute,, a organization ruled by androids determined to enslave or wipe out the human race. Its in this android-controlled, dystopian world that Paislee goes undercover, fighting to stop the very human-like androids while also fighting to prove herself. Despite the risks, she takes on a new identity to locate judges and employees loyal to the Institute and also locate rebels who have been processed by those judges with in the Central Files – a courthouse in Portland. With everything she does within the Central Files being watched and recorded by the Institute, the sense of ever present danger is very real. She must tread carefully.
With enough action and roller-coaster twists to keep you turning the pages, and a few slow spots that give you a chance to breathe again, you’ll find yourself lost in the book right up until the end.
While the second book in the No Freedom series, it does enough of the heavy lifting that you wouldn’t need to read the first to get up to speed, though I will admit, I do want to go back now and read the first.
All in all, it’s a 5-star for me. I’ve become a fan of Ms. Goss and look forward to reading more of her books very soon.
