Since childhood, Nila Carter was made to spend every weekend at the family cabin. In her teenage years she believed it to be a prison. As an adult it became her sanctuary and means to survive. When a mysterious outbreak occurs in India, Nila’s brother, Bobby, a virologist with the CDC, places the family on a precautionary alert to be ready to bug out. Unlike anything he’s ever seen, the … the rabies-like virus is not only deadly but causes extreme violent behavior in anyone who becomes infected. Following her brother’s advice, Nila begins to stockpile.
After months of preparing, just as it seems the virus is over, everything implodes and Bobby informs them to leave the city. With her family, Nila heads to the mountains and to her father’s isolated cabin. There she is eventually joined by friends and strangers, all hoping to safely stay clear of the virus that grips the world.
While there, the group forms a tight bond, feeling secure that they will beat the extinction event and in due course return home. As time moves on, Nila quickly learns there are things they cannot run from.

I really liked the characters in this book and my emotions reacted when good and bad things happened to them. Was kind of sad that it ended at book 2 with no book 3 on the horizon for a happily ever after for them. Was really hard to put this one down.
One of the best apocalyptic books I’ve ever read. Realistic and enjoyable.
I enjoyed this book, its story line was well built. Very real characters in a frightening, stressful situation.
I read this whole series and I really liked it. This book really gives you an idea of what could happen and what you might do.
It is well written and catches interest right away. Read it quickly and enjoyed it. The first book in a series and I would read the other books.
I love this series can’t wait until 3rd bok
wonderfully developed characters, very believable plot
Normally I don’t care for this type of book, but this one was pretty good.
I started this book and couldn’t get into it so I set it aside. A few days later I tried again and didn’t want to put it down. I’m a mood reader and as one I sometimes need to start a book a few times. It is rarely because of the writing. In this case it definitely was just me. Once I got into the story, I was fascinated. I loved how the virus and what was happening unfolded. I thought it was pretty realistic with reactions. There were a few hard places for me. I had my heart in my throat more than once. I also felt it break more than once. I never heard of this author before coming across the story. Now I need to find more books by her. If you enjoy apocalyptic books you should give this one a try. It is one of the most interesting books I have read lately on a pandemic crisis.
Good apocalypse book
For anyone that appreciates zombie or plague books, this is a great story. It kept you guessing what would happen next.
Gripping, really get a connection with the characters.
Interesting
Very good post-apocalyptic non-zombie, zombie book. Well written survival tactics. Some parts easy to see what was going to happen but good characters.
I read a later work before reading this. The writing is about the same – very good, but the editing was much better in The Last Woman. The ideas in this book were good, and like the other work, the characters felt very real and engaging. I don’t care much for serial novels, and they seem to be the author’s preference. So I probably won’t be reading more of hers unless I run across something that is a complete story with only one set of covers. If you like post-apocalypse serial novels with strong writing and characters you care about, Ms. Druga seems to be a writer you will enjoy.
This was a zombie book. I don’t usually like them, but this was really well written.
For those who like post apocalyptic stories. Nothing that’s original.
This book kept me turning pages. I struggled a little with the simple ness of the characters but it improved with chapters. A great read!
This was a fun 2 part EOW series. For those who enjoy this type of books, add this one to your list
Loved this series!!
