Wonderful mystery!
so even on a regular week in a regular year lee strauss is one of the best writers around. her style incredible. the historical mystery genre has been gifted a spectacular addition. during covid i have been spending quite an enormous amount of time with ginger and basil and now hailey higgins and samantha hawke. i have already downloaded from another of her series as well… i’m a fairly fast reader…. oooohhhh, and what a delightful time in reading land… and all 3 short stories with lady gold investigates have been read… i’ve finished 7 these last few weeks. so for convenience sake so i can get back to “death on the tower” i’m going to copy and paste my review to all 7 aforementioned books. forgive me… but i must…
Simplistic. Tedious.
I’m an Agathie Christie fan. The story was written along those lines. A cozy mystery.
Lots of plot twists. Lots of suspects. Good finish.
Good story, fun characters!
Nice descriptions of the era
Another fine Ginger Gold mystery.
I’m behind on the Ginger Gold series so I decided take a break from all the romances I’ve been reading and catch up my favorite detective/fashionista. I like this cozy mystery series set in the 1920’s in England. It’s inspired by the Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries TV show which I enjoyed.
Ginger and Basil are just married and setting off on their honeymoon trip aboard the Flying Scotsman train. They aren’t very far into the trip before something gruesome is discovered when the train snags a mail bag. Because Chief Inspector Basil Reed is onboard he’s called upon to begin the investigation immediately, but investigating the gruesome death, a jewelry theft is discovered. Since the train has been stopped to investigate the murder, the jewelry is quickly recovered and the thief(ves) identified. Ginger realizes that the jewelry wouldn’t have been found if the train had not been stopped because of the murder. Is it possible the two are connected and if so, were both crimes committed by the same person(s)?
Ginger’s latest adventure reminded me a little of Murder on the Orient Express because of the all characters aboard the train who seemed to have a connection with the dead man. Of course Ginger helps Basil with his investigation, and it seems they’re both getting used Ginger being Mrs. Reed rather than Lady Gold. Ginger is realizing that although he truly loves Basil, she misses some of the “perks” that came with her title.
I really liked this story even thought there were many characters on the train, and I had a little trouble remembering who was who and what profession they had. I did have suspicions about one of the characters as soon as they appeared, but I was only partially correct. The revealed plot wasn’t even close to what I had thought it was, but I’m rarely correct in this things. Besides Basil and Ginger we get to see Boss (of course), Felicia, the Dowager Lady Gold (Ambrosia), and get caught up on Scout. I still miss Hailey who’s left England and is back in the U.S.
If you enjoy cozy mysteries with a dose of historical fiction then this is for you!
Fun to read. One of the better I have read recently.
The time period was excellently brought to life and the characters were interesting. I did feel like I would know the characters better if I had started at the beginning of this group of books.
This book was very entertaining. I couldn’t put it down. I love Lady Gold and her fashions! Basil and boss are also great. This books makes me want to take a trip by train. First-class, of course.
Set in the 1930’s this witty double mystery kept me engaged right up to the last page.
I will first day that I reserve five stars for true classics. This book and the whole series are a good read, well written and edited, with an enjoyable mystery and characters that you want to see again. I enjoyed this one so much I started reading the series from the beginning.
I have read alot of your books and they are all great.
Was a fast read yet holds your interest. I read it in one day.
This is an historical set mystery. The protagonist is wealthy, which is a pet peeve of mine – it seems like it gives the characters unlimited options which seems like a cop out. Interesting mystery set on a train.
A highly readable tour through a time and era that may be gone but hardly forgotten. Fun trip with the upper class as they puzzle their way en route to Edinburgh.
In the true tradition of English country mysteries. Good characters and plot. Nice twists.
