It’s the summer of 1879, and Annie Fuller, a young San Francisco widow, is in trouble. Annie’s husband squandered her fortune before committing suicide five years earlier, and one of his creditors is now threatening to take the boardinghouse she owns to pay off a debt.
Annie Fuller also has a secret. She supplements her income by giving domestic and business advice as Madam Sibyl, one of San … of San Francisco’s most exclusive clairvoyants, and one of Madam Sibyl’s clients, Matthew Voss, has died. The police believe his death was suicide brought upon by bankruptcy, but Annie believes Voss has been murdered and that his assets have been stolen.
Nate Dawson has a problem. As the Voss family lawyer, he would love to believe that Matthew Voss didn’t leave his grieving family destitute. But that would mean working with Annie Fuller, a woman who alternatively attracts and infuriates him as she shatters every notion he ever had of proper ladylike behavior.
Sparks fly as Anne and Nate pursue the truth about the murder of Matthew Voss in this light-hearted, cozy historical mystery set in the foggy gas-lit world of Victorian San Francisco.

Excellent historical fiction of early San Franciso.
This book was listed as a historical romance and it had the romance but not enough historical. It was mostly confined to two households and I’m sure how they were run during this period was accurate it didn’t make me feel like I was in 19th century San Francisco. It could have been anywhere. The characters were engaging but I had solved the …
Clever, fun, probably representative of the period as it likes to end chapters in cliff-hangers. Perhaps published originally as a serial in a magazine “back in the days.” Good, entertaining story. I would be surprised if you didn’t enjoy it for the period piece it is.
Fun reading about an independent woman who follows her own instincts at the turn of the century. Kind of a female Sherlock Holmes but down to earth!!
Loved the story line.
A better than average book that kept my attention. Easy to read.
This is the second Annie Fuller book I’ve read. Well written with great characters, very enjoyable reading.

It was nice.
Cute story.
The characters were quirky but real. The story was suspenseful & kept me turning the next page. Will look for this author again.
Really fine period mystery. Excellent character development. I look forward to reading the next one in the series.
The author developed the characters well. The plot was interesting and the end was satisfactory. The book had a real feel of a past era.
Well written and close to history. Those who know San Francisco, and it’s history, will find a lot to like here. Those who like a good detective story will like this as well.
I read this awhile back and tried finding other reads by this author, it was that good.
