It’s the summer of 1879, and Annie Fuller, a young San Francisco widow, is in trouble. Annie’s husband squandered her fortune before committing suicide five years earlier, and one of his creditors is now threatening to take the boardinghouse she owns to pay off a debt.
Annie Fuller also has a secret. She supplements her income by giving domestic and business advice as Madam Sibyl, one of San … of San Francisco’s most exclusive clairvoyants, and one of Madam Sibyl’s clients, Matthew Voss, has died. The police believe his death was suicide brought upon by bankruptcy, but Annie believes Voss has been murdered and that his assets have been stolen.
Nate Dawson has a problem. As the Voss family lawyer, he would love to believe that Matthew Voss didn’t leave his grieving family destitute. But that would mean working with Annie Fuller, a woman who alternatively attracts and infuriates him as she shatters every notion he ever had of proper ladylike behavior.
Sparks fly as Anne and Nate pursue the truth about the murder of Matthew Voss in this light-hearted, cozy historical mystery set in the foggy gas-lit world of Victorian San Francisco.

Okay, not special
The main character is original ….at least in her profession. These books read well and keep you entertained and have characters that are likeable. The heroine is a bit rash so it makes for a bit of a nail biter at times. All and all I enjoy them.
Really enjoyed this Murder mystery that takes place in the late 1800s in San Francisco. Apparently the author is a historian and it was fun to learn a little about how life for women was in that time period.
An entertaining who-dunnit told from an unusual and interesting perspective.
Quick read
Recently recommend this author and this series based in San Francisco
Love this series of books. Well written, entertaining easy reads.
I’m afraid there was nothing about this book that I liked. In fact, I didn’t finish it. An interesting premise, but that’s about it. The characters were washed out, and the story line progressed painfully slowly. Don’t bother!
Good depiction of Victorian attitudes, how women were viewed, and the ways that society was being changed by progressive women and men.
Interesting historical mystery. Always enjoy Louisa Locke’s books.
Great series takes place in 1800’s San Francisco.
It was fine but I prefer more present day reading.
Enjoyable read with surprise twists & strained family relationships. Connecting the dots as to possible suspects brings a surprise ending.
I just couldn’t get into it.
Good book. Kept you guessing about who dun ut
The far fetched plot was overlooked as the clues unfolded. Did bog down in the middle with the constant ruminations of who did what to whom.
I really enjoyed this book.
Loved the SF history this author includes.
A fun, well written mystery. Different and enjoyable.
I have read this entire series and enjoyed them very much. Well written characters and the story flows. Anyone who likes period pieces and light mysteries will be pleased.
