It’s the summer of 1879, and Annie Fuller, a young San Francisco widow, is in trouble. Annie’s husband squandered her fortune before committing suicide five years earlier, and one of his creditors is now threatening to take the boardinghouse she owns to pay off a debt.
Annie Fuller also has a secret. She supplements her income by giving domestic and business advice as Madam Sibyl, one of San … of San Francisco’s most exclusive clairvoyants, and one of Madam Sibyl’s clients, Matthew Voss, has died. The police believe his death was suicide brought upon by bankruptcy, but Annie believes Voss has been murdered and that his assets have been stolen.
Nate Dawson has a problem. As the Voss family lawyer, he would love to believe that Matthew Voss didn’t leave his grieving family destitute. But that would mean working with Annie Fuller, a woman who alternatively attracts and infuriates him as she shatters every notion he ever had of proper ladylike behavior.
Sparks fly as Anne and Nate pursue the truth about the murder of Matthew Voss in this light-hearted, cozy historical mystery set in the foggy gas-lit world of Victorian San Francisco.

I enjoy all of these mysteries very much
I could not get through this book.
I finished this book. It’s okay. I liked the characters, and I hope they have happy lives, but I do not think I’ll read about them.
Wonderful characters. Very readable.
Calming style of writing but exciting mystery!
It was a fun read
The heroine of this series runs a boarding house while posing as a medium i order to work as a financial advisor. The stories are about her borders and friends and the adventures they ave solving crimes. In this case 2 elderly sisters who were seamstresses are part of the solution. Easy reading and pleasantly happy.
Enjoyed the characters and the originality of character who is driver of story.
Just an entertaining read.
Interesting characters
I enjoy the early San Francisco setting and the Victorian elements. Good plot too.
There were lots of twists as the main character followed the leads. I liked that it was set in England, with a veteran, whose has a whole history of friendships to disclose along the way.
A wonderful portrait of San Francisco life style in the late 1800.
Light, easy to read mystery. Good story, but a little too formula for me.
This was a fun book to read to see how a young widow finds solutions to her financial problems and in the process discovers the value of the abilities she possesses.
MAIDS OF MISFORTUNE is a charming little murder mystery, set in Victorian San Francisco, with nary a strange steam engine in sight.
When you read Victorian, does London, shrouded in fog, come to mind first? Do you think of Whitechapel and Saucy Jack? In MAIDS OF MISFORTUNE, you will find yourself far from the British Isles in another city where …
Nicely done.
Interesting historical background of San Francisco. Entertaining storyline, strong female characters. Not the typical swooning heroines of yesteryear!
Very good series. Highly recommend.
This story set in early San Francisco was a fun read. It had an element of mystery, yet it had some romance in it also. I loved the characters.
Love this series/author. Appreciate reading about working women circa 1900 San Francisco.
