It’s the summer of 1879, and Annie Fuller, a young San Francisco widow, is in trouble. Annie’s husband squandered her fortune before committing suicide five years earlier, and one of his creditors is now threatening to take the boardinghouse she owns to pay off a debt.
Annie Fuller also has a secret. She supplements her income by giving domestic and business advice as Madam Sibyl, one of San … of San Francisco’s most exclusive clairvoyants, and one of Madam Sibyl’s clients, Matthew Voss, has died. The police believe his death was suicide brought upon by bankruptcy, but Annie believes Voss has been murdered and that his assets have been stolen.
Nate Dawson has a problem. As the Voss family lawyer, he would love to believe that Matthew Voss didn’t leave his grieving family destitute. But that would mean working with Annie Fuller, a woman who alternatively attracts and infuriates him as she shatters every notion he ever had of proper ladylike behavior.
Sparks fly as Anne and Nate pursue the truth about the murder of Matthew Voss in this light-hearted, cozy historical mystery set in the foggy gas-lit world of Victorian San Francisco.

Enjoyed reading about this era. Glad I don’t have to be dependent as most women of that time were. Makes me appreciate how far women have come. Please keep wring about these interesting characters.
a quick read with a little bit of history thrown in
A good little mystery
Thoroughly enjoyed.
This was such a good book. WOW I had a hard time putting it down, and since I use a Kindle ran out of juice a couple of times. I
A really good read.
A cozy mystery and a historical romance wrapped in one, with a solid cast of characters. The rest of the Victorian San Francisco Mystery series continues down the great path this book starts.
Lovely series set in 1880 San Francisco of a widowed financially savvy woman solving crimes and mysteries.
Loved all of her books I think searie
When I got in to the book about little over hair just had 1 letter on the page and it was easy to read with it like that
Didn’t like
Didn’t care for it…predictable
I read a few chapters, but it wasn’t holding my interest. It didn’t seem realistic to me. I will try another by this author because the writing wasn’t bad, it was just the story itself. A young woman dressing up as someone she isn’t, trying to keep it a secret while snooping around as a maid, a profession she has zero experience in … Maybe the …
While the book was historically interesting, I found the whole thing fairly sluggish and was just glad when it was over. I thought about recommending it to my book club when I was about halfway through, but then changed my mind as I really didn’t like the way it ended.
Boring; couldn’t finish
Was okay.
Charming, engaging Victorian Era mystery set in San Francisco with a feisty, practical, take-charge heroine who breaks boundaries imposed upon women to accomplish her goals.
Loved the ending
I liked the book, but I don’t appreciate the bad language. Most of it was in the first 2 or 3 chapters and then scattered in the story. There wasn’t a lot after chapter 2 or 3. It didn’t add anything to the story and some of it was done by the heroine. Which at the time the story took place respectful ladies didn’t cuss.
There were a lot of twists …
Fairly predictable
Excellent, enjoyed it a great deal
