It’s the summer of 1879, and Annie Fuller, a young San Francisco widow, is in trouble. Annie’s husband squandered her fortune before committing suicide five years earlier, and one of his creditors is now threatening to take the boardinghouse she owns to pay off a debt.
Annie Fuller also has a secret. She supplements her income by giving domestic and business advice as Madam Sibyl, one of San … of San Francisco’s most exclusive clairvoyants, and one of Madam Sibyl’s clients, Matthew Voss, has died. The police believe his death was suicide brought upon by bankruptcy, but Annie believes Voss has been murdered and that his assets have been stolen.
Nate Dawson has a problem. As the Voss family lawyer, he would love to believe that Matthew Voss didn’t leave his grieving family destitute. But that would mean working with Annie Fuller, a woman who alternatively attracts and infuriates him as she shatters every notion he ever had of proper ladylike behavior.
Sparks fly as Anne and Nate pursue the truth about the murder of Matthew Voss in this light-hearted, cozy historical mystery set in the foggy gas-lit world of Victorian San Francisco.

I liked everything about this book. Well written and great characters.
I loved how this story unfolded and that the main characters were successful. This could easily have happened at any time in the past or present.
GREAT BOOK
An entertaining start to a series I will certainly enjoy continuing to read.
Fun quick read.
thoroughly enjoyed
Well written book. It contains enough suspense to keep you in your chair reading. The villain is kept hidden until the end making for interesting reading right up to the end.
Enjoyed living through the early years of San Francisco. Brought historical background to a city I’ve visited quite a few times. Characters are enjoyable and I continued reading two more books in the series
I enjoy books where the protagonist is a strong woman that is ahead of her time. Anne Fuller is such a character. Living in the late in the late 1800’s, Anne keeps pushing at the edges of convention. This series keeps me interested throughout the book with a satisfying ending. It is one of the few that I look forward to the next one!
Very enjoyable read. Love the characters.
Love the characters. The plot is will written and the characters are very likable
Since I read some of the later books written with these characters, I enjoyed “starting at the beginning” – very good plot and great detective work done by this woman living before her time.
Enjoyed it so much. I am now following this authors writings as I enjoy her work very much
I enjoyed the adventures and the background. A believable tale, good author
Enjoyable and clean read. It’s so nice to come across an author who has interesting plots and characters without filling the story with language and scenes that are objectionable.
