It’s the summer of 1879, and Annie Fuller, a young San Francisco widow, is in trouble. Annie’s husband squandered her fortune before committing suicide five years earlier, and one of his creditors is now threatening to take the boardinghouse she owns to pay off a debt.
Annie Fuller also has a secret. She supplements her income by giving domestic and business advice as Madam Sibyl, one of San … of San Francisco’s most exclusive clairvoyants, and one of Madam Sibyl’s clients, Matthew Voss, has died. The police believe his death was suicide brought upon by bankruptcy, but Annie believes Voss has been murdered and that his assets have been stolen.
Nate Dawson has a problem. As the Voss family lawyer, he would love to believe that Matthew Voss didn’t leave his grieving family destitute. But that would mean working with Annie Fuller, a woman who alternatively attracts and infuriates him as she shatters every notion he ever had of proper ladylike behavior.
Sparks fly as Anne and Nate pursue the truth about the murder of Matthew Voss in this light-hearted, cozy historical mystery set in the foggy gas-lit world of Victorian San Francisco.

I enjoy learning about the history of San Fransisco
It is a fun read, interesting characters. I read all of the books in this series and wish there were more of them.
I love this books
Great read
I love the main character, a bright, modern-minded woman investigating worthy cases, using the bravery, shrewdness and ingenuity that more sexist time than today required.
This book provides another look into life of a woman in the 19th century when that women is not traditional or willing to let men of the times direct her life. It is entertaining and as a woman I found it empowering. Fun read and kept your interest.
If I read it, it was excellent !!!!! I READ IT. JAK,jr.
A curious and brave woman is more than a match for a young lawyer and the police of young San Fransisco.
An absorbing “who done it” that keeps you guessing and reading.
I will read anything by Louisa Locke. Her characters are courageous and realistic. The story line is always informative.
A sweet and entertaining Victorian Era whodunnit . It is very accurate in describing San Francisco at that time. I would read more like this.
enjoyable, looking forward to the next in series
Absorbing plot. Great character development. My friends whom I recommended read Maids of Misfortune loved it! Highly recommend.
Women;s rights were certainly not important in this period and it must have been very frustrating for intelligent and competent women. The author writes well and the plot is interesting and different.
Great book…really enjoyed it
Historic romantic suspense……
This is one in a series worth sampling. The books aren’t great literature but the stories are good. Gives insight into what life was like for woman during this time. The protagonist is resourceful and clever. Nice cast of characters. Nice all- around.
Loved all the books I’ve read so far in this series. Clean, which leaves a lot for you to imagine instead of someone dictating how you should feel.
Historically accurate.
This is the first book I’ve read by this author but it won’t be the last. Enjoyed every minute.
