It’s the summer of 1879, and Annie Fuller, a young San Francisco widow, is in trouble. Annie’s husband squandered her fortune before committing suicide five years earlier, and one of his creditors is now threatening to take the boardinghouse she owns to pay off a debt.
Annie Fuller also has a secret. She supplements her income by giving domestic and business advice as Madam Sibyl, one of San … of San Francisco’s most exclusive clairvoyants, and one of Madam Sibyl’s clients, Matthew Voss, has died. The police believe his death was suicide brought upon by bankruptcy, but Annie believes Voss has been murdered and that his assets have been stolen.
Nate Dawson has a problem. As the Voss family lawyer, he would love to believe that Matthew Voss didn’t leave his grieving family destitute. But that would mean working with Annie Fuller, a woman who alternatively attracts and infuriates him as she shatters every notion he ever had of proper ladylike behavior.
Sparks fly as Anne and Nate pursue the truth about the murder of Matthew Voss in this light-hearted, cozy historical mystery set in the foggy gas-lit world of Victorian San Francisco.

I enjoyed every minute of the story and hated it to end. The characters are interesting and believable. The author’s style is clear, straightforward and a pleasure to read.
I was drawn into the story as soon as I started reading! Annie is so real and likable, I dove into the rest of the series as soon as I finished the first book because I couldn’t wait to see what happened next!
Everything about this book was charming. I read it a while back but found the audiobook on sale recently, so it gave me the excuse I needed to reread it.
Annie Fuller, a trained financier who can find no work since she’s not a man, masquerades as a fortune teller in order to earn an income. Unfortunately, near the beginning of the story, one of …
I do enjoy the characters in these books. It’s enjoyable to watch them grow and evolve. These are well written and entertaining stories to read.
Easy reading and kept my interest to the surprise ending!
I reallly like Louisa’s development of story line. I have liked all the books I have read by her. Excellent
A time when women were not thought of much in the work place and how Annie makes a place there for herself; men not withstanding!
Wonderful period story. So much fun!
I loved it! This is a must read series!
This is the first book I have read by this author. Interesting plot. I always enjoy when there is a female lead character. I do have other books in queue by this author so that is always a good sign.
I had already read the fifth of this series and enjoyed it, so thought I’d go back and start it from book one. Delightful Victorian mystery set in San Francisco. The heroine is a very young widow who runs a boarding house. She makes money on the side as a fake clairvoyant. One of her customers is murdered and she takes a job as a maid in the dead …
I thought it was well written and interesting. I like this whole series quite a lot.
This book should be titled “Cheers for the Women!”. I laughed so hard when picturing in my mind one of the final struggles in the Voss home. Way to go ladies! Unfortunately , this is exactly where the careful crafting the characters broke down completely. But I still enjoyed it.
Historical inaccurate, trite heroine, blackface in the first chapter.
It starts a little slow for a mystery romance novel. The end is exciting.
This book kept me engaged with its story line. This book is well written and it’s clean. I would recommend this book
A bit slow to get going but OK when it does. Easy read
Another good read from Louis Locke
Love the way the author incorporates both San Francisco and period information into the story.
Loved the characters and time period. Loved the mystery
