It’s the summer of 1879, and Annie Fuller, a young San Francisco widow, is in trouble. Annie’s husband squandered her fortune before committing suicide five years earlier, and one of his creditors is now threatening to take the boardinghouse she owns to pay off a debt.
Annie Fuller also has a secret. She supplements her income by giving domestic and business advice as Madam Sibyl, one of San … of San Francisco’s most exclusive clairvoyants, and one of Madam Sibyl’s clients, Matthew Voss, has died. The police believe his death was suicide brought upon by bankruptcy, but Annie believes Voss has been murdered and that his assets have been stolen.
Nate Dawson has a problem. As the Voss family lawyer, he would love to believe that Matthew Voss didn’t leave his grieving family destitute. But that would mean working with Annie Fuller, a woman who alternatively attracts and infuriates him as she shatters every notion he ever had of proper ladylike behavior.
Sparks fly as Anne and Nate pursue the truth about the murder of Matthew Voss in this light-hearted, cozy historical mystery set in the foggy gas-lit world of Victorian San Francisco.

Very predictable. Could not finish reading
Mystery. San Francisco landmarks and a little history.
Good historical mystery.
It juxtaposed a woman’s awareness of her capabilities and the low/no expectations of the Victorians of America. It was well written
I enjoyed the book and it made me interested in other books in this series. I appreciated the sense of time and place the author conveyed.
The plot line moved soooo slowly. Not very plausible.
I enjoyed the story and the unexpected ending.

Thoroughly enjoyed this work
Easy reading, the characters were great, kept me guessing, loved the ending.
Locke does an excellent job of telling a historically accurate mystery of the late 19th century. Her characters are deep and the plot only thickens as time goes! I look forward to reading more about Mr. Dawson and Mrs.Fuller.
Hard for me to get into at first, but after 75 pages I couldn’t put the book down!
Historical fiction – enlightening
Very much enjoyed this book…. twice! And I seldom read books a second time.
I received this book free on Book Bub and really enjoyed it. I’ll look for other books by this author.
Hoped it would be better
Interesting reading in women’s roles of the times
The characters provide an information packed view of the life in summertime San Francisco in 1870’s. Also you’ll find a surprising action filled ending.
