At only five years old, Saroo Brierley got lost on a train in India. Unable to read or write or recall the name of his hometown or even his own last name, he survived alone for weeks on the rough streets of Calcutta before ultimately being transferred to an agency and adopted by a couple in Australia.
Despite his gratitude, Brierley always wondered about his origins. Eventually, with the advent of Google Earth, he had the opportunity to look for the needle in a haystack he once called home, and pore over satellite images for landmarks he might recognize or mathematical equations that might further narrow down the labyrinthine map of India. One day, after years of searching, he miraculously found what he was looking for and set off to find his family.
Lion is a moving, poignant, and inspirational true story of survival and triumph against incredible odds. It celebrates the importance of never letting go of what drives the human spirit: hope.

This book was also published as “A Long Way Home.” A lovely story of an American family who adopts a 5-year boy from India. His life in India is impoverished, yet his love for his family is strong despite immense hardship.
His older brothers often take off to find opportunity and on a jaunt with one of them, he is left behind on a train and lost. Through a cautionary bent he doesn’t fall victim to what many other children do in the streets of Calcutta.
Rounded up with other unfortunate children, his journey begins with compassionate care and his adoption. His American family encourages him and allows him to embrace his ties to his past. A longing for the family he left behind is a constant yearning he unceasingly searches for.
A heartwarming story.
I read this without knowing that it was made into a movie; I can see why it was.
It’s every bit as interesting and suspenseful as a novel but also gives a glimpse into the reality that is India.
Amazing story of resilience, endurance, determination, and heart. This is one of the best books I have read in a very long time.
Have not seen this movie. But the book was amazing, very interesting, heart warming, and after reading this do not plan to see the film.
