On May 14, 1804, a party of explorers dispatched by President Thomas Jefferson set off up the Missouri River into America’s newly acquired Louisiana Territory. Under the leadership of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, the men of the Corps of Discovery would cross the continent and into history. Here, from award-winning historian Ralph K. Andrist, is the dramatic story of their epic journey.
Reading it makes you wonder how they did it. Usually with the help of Indians, but sometimes they lost rifles or horses to Indians. With long periods of bad weather and huge obstacles such as waterfalls it is a wonder that only one man died during the trek.
A different take on the expedition. Not in detail but a good overview. Enjoyed the many quotes from diary entries. Worthwhile read.
A great telling of the arduous trail and meticulous planning and organization that made it a successful journey. It truly opened the West up for further exploration by millions of pioneers.
If you want an accurate and “down to earth” transcript, of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, this is the book to read. The way facts are presented you, the reader, actually feel you are an integral part, of the expedition. A must read for anyone interested in an accurate accounting, of this expedition.
Dr. Holly returns home to Texas to open her veterinary practice and to watch over her deceased friend’s young daughter. The only problem is that the widowed husband Sheriff Cash wants nothing to do with her because his wife was leaving them at the time of her accident. They eventually form a friendship that helps heal both of them.
Very good read and gave a great deal of information about Lewis and Clark that I hadn’t read or learned from other sources. It was amazing to learn how prepared and organized they were. They were able to complete a 2 year expedition into unknown part of the country with encounters with many tribes and not lose a single member of there team.
Good overall treatment of L&C’s journey, their challenges and triumphs. A little bit short on the epilogue about what happened to them after they returned, and why their work was so important to the opening of the West.
Entertaining read, with good treatment of the characters in a journalistic style.
Interesting insight into the journey across the United States during the Presidency of Thomas Jefferson
We are blessed that the men believed and fought for the right to be free
Not the best book available on Lewis and Clark expedition
Excellent description of L & C events and difficulties. Description of the Indian population. I enjoyed the book.
Falls short of other accounts
Could not put it down.
I learned a lot about the difficulties these brave men endured to complete their mission.
Inspirational to read about this chapter in American History. An easy and interesting read.
Badly written and confusing (there is no intro). Also, full of uninteresting details (do I really need to know every detail of boatbuilding) while skimming over interesting parts
In a short time, I was able to travel with Lewis and Clark.
Concise and interesting.
I love reading about the adventures of Lewis and Clark. I only wish the book was longer since I didn’t want it to end! Lots of interesting detail on the Indian tribes and their culture, as well as the physical and mental challenges that the Lewis and Clark team faced.
Informative. Mostly accurate.
I enjoyed reading Lewis and Clark. It is not a long book, but I learned some things about the frontier that I didn’t previously know. Would recommend it to anyone looking for something different to read. Those explorers were very brave men and were lucky to survive the journey.
